2007: A Year In Music

2007... what is there really to say about this year in music. For me there has not been a year that I was so excited and liked so many albums. This year was so great that even without Radiohead's In Rainbows (my favorite album of this year, decade, and possibly ever... well with the exception of The Beatles Abbey Road) this year would have still been amazing. So here's a runthrough of my favorite albums:

1. In Rainbows-Radiohead:

a8174e3aefcfe672a6ec3538268d8e16radiohead-in-rainbows.png

So you all know how much I love this album perhaps this might explain why:

This album I remember being so excited for. My love for Radiohead started very quickly considering that I really started to listen to them at the end of 2006. I had already missed out on the 2006 tour (which I wish I was a fan to go to). The Band had roadtested so many songs that would end up on In Rainbows. The excitement and anticipation of this album killed me throughout the summer of 07 when there were so few band updates on DAS. Then around September there started to be a bit more life with these codes, which build up more momentum that something was happening. Then on Oct. 1 there was the announcement by Jonny that the new album would be released in 10 days! You have no idea how excited I was for this album, I was freaking out when I found out about it. And then on top of it I found there was a bonus disc with other songs.

The on Oct. 10 I woke up early and was so excited to listen to the album that it felt like I was a little child waking up Christmas anticipating opening the presents. I then decided to listen to the album and to be quite honest was pretty disappointed first listen. Being so familular with the live 2006 performances I felt that some of the songs didn't have the same energy (Jigsaw, Videotape, 15 Step). As the days and weeks progressed I listened to the album more and more and became more obsessed with the album. To this day I can listen to it and still not get sick of it. I often wish that I could go back in time and experience the excitement for this album all over again because I have never experienced something like that since then or before.

The album is great because it is extremely concise and to the point, and works extremely well as one unit. The album is full of emotion but also a lot of truth, and you can see how Thom's lyrics are more personal, talking about himself, rather than political issues. With the exception of 15 Step and Videotape, this album really walks away from the electronica that defined Radiohead earlier on in the decade. Having flavorful and colorful sounds throughout the album there are many layers that has it be a must to listen over to the small intricacies. With the color and feel of the album it is no wonder that it is called In Rainbows

Tracks to check out: Reckoner, 15 Step, Arpeggi

My Favorite Tracks: (at the moment, constantly changes) Videotape, Nude, Arpeggi

2. Person Pitch-Panda Bear

PersonPitchCover300.jpg

I remember in 2007 I was around looking for new albums to get into, but couldn't find any. I stumbled across this on itunes. I ended up buying the album because I listened to the songs and although they sounded a little different than most music I had listened to previously I found it catchy. This album is one of my favorite albums of all time. From start to finish the way that Panda Bear layers all the different instruments/sounds, it's an album that you need to listen to multiple times not just to appreciate it, but also listen to things you may have missed out on before.

Tracks check out: Comfy In Nautica, Bros, Good Girl/Carrots

My Favorite Tracks: Good Girl/Carrots, Search For Delicious, I'm Not

3. Once-Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova

OST%20Once.jpg

This album is the soundtrack to the movie Once. The movie itself is one of my favorite movies and it included great music from Glen Hansard (of the Frames) and Marketa Irglova. The movie won the Academy Award for Best Song (Falling Slowly), and from that launched them into fame to which now they call themselves The Swell Season. The songs have personality and emotion to it, running through feelings of love. It is no wonder that the two were together dispite the large age gap. With Hansards empowering and gut wrenching vocals and Irglova's soft voice it is a great combo

Tracks to Check Out: Falling Slowly, When Your Mind's Made Up, Lies

My Favorite Tracks: Once, The Hill, Falling Slowly

-----

4. Oracular Spectacular-MGMT

mgmt.jpg

This album is a perfect album for the summer. I remember that I didn't get into this album until 2008, but it still is a great album. The song that initially hooked me was Time to Pretend. The psychedelic pop electronic sound that MGMT was able to get on this album was very interesting and I quite enjoyed this album because of that.

Tracks to check out: Kids, Time to Pretend, Electric Feel

My Favorite Tracks: Electric Feel, The Handshake, The Youth

-----

5. Neon Bible-The Arcade Fire

neon-bible.jpg

Being the band's 2nd album release after their extremely successful first album Funeral, Neon bible continued in the same sounding path as their previous album using full orchestra this album is no disappointment. After such success and fame from their first album many probably felt how could they make their 2nd album be close to as good as the first, well they were able to. With energy and layering of instruments the album keeps you intrigued throughout and also makes it interesting to listen to multiple times to hear small things you may have skipped out on. Even to this day I still get chills when hearing the string work in The Well and the Lighthouse, it's just so great.

Tracks to check out: Keep the Car Running, No Cars Go, Intervention

My Favorite songs: The Well and the Lighthouse, Black Mirror, My Body is a Cage

------

6. Armchair Apocrypha-Andrew Bird

0000069805_350.jpg

The multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird releases this album after his successful album The Mysterious Production of Eggs. With his skills in layering and looping Andrew Bird is able to make his music interesting and thoughtful. This album is no different than others and also show how great of a musician he is.

Tracks to check out: Imitosis, Heretics, Plasticities

My Favorite Songs: Fiery Crash, Dark Matter, Heretics

----

7. We All Belong-Dr. Dog

we%20all%20belong.jpg

One band that I don't see so much on this thread talked about, Dr. Dog's album We All Belong is a very catchy album that goes back to the roots of 60's & 70's rock/pop music. Initially I thought it was a rap artist, but they are far from it.

Tracks to Check Out: Ain't it Strange, Alaska, Old News

My favorite songs: Ain't It Strange, The Way the Lazy Do, Keep a Friend

------

8. Seal Beach-Album Leaf

rl_albumleaf_sealbeach_lg.JPG

One artist i'm sure that I talk about a lot but a great artist never the less. More of ambient music, The Album Leaf for me is a great artist to listen to while doing work and also having great imaginary imagery associated with the music. Although only an EP this release is no different than other albums in that it's still solid and also includes live performances of songs on other releases.

Tracks to Check Out: Brennevin, Malmo, Seal Beach

My Favorite songs: Brennevin, Seal Beach, For Jonathan

-------

9. All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone-Explosions in the Sky

AllofaSudden.jpg

This was the first album I had ever listened to by this artist. Although the album is all instrumental, it is post-rock and for me an album that is great to listen to late at night. Although the album is relaxing and chill it has it's moments of sounding epic and powerful with the driving guitars and drums. With songs averaging around 6 minutes or so, each song is a treat and for me the album is great music to imagine/visualize with

Tracks to check out: So Long Lonesome, The Birth and Death of the Day, Welcome Ghosts

My Favorite Tracks: The Birth And Death Of The Day, It's Natural to be Afraid, Welcome Ghosts

----------

10. Strawberry Jam-Animal Collective

strawberry-jam.jpg

With one of the members already having a solo album released this year, Strawberry Jam is a typical Animal Collective album filled with noise pop throughout. Some say that this is AC's best album, and it really is a great one!

Tracks to Check Out: Fireworks, Peacebone, For Reverend Green

My Favorite Tracks: Chores, Cuckoo Cuckoo, Fireworks

------

11. Memory Almost Full-Paul McCartney

cover.jpg

Another release by the great Sir Paul McCartney. At first listening to this album was a disappointment but after more listens its an album that grows on you. The album title possibly being believed to be an angram "for my soulmate LLM" (LLM was Linda who was Paul's first wife who died in the mid 90's of cancer), it fits with McCartney going through the divorce. The album at one point also has songs that connect together that resembles the Beatles last recorded album Abbey Road. The album has many catchy songs and shows that even being in his 60's and pushing closer towards 70, McCartney still has energy and drive to write great songs.

Tracks to Check Out: Dance Tonight, Ever Present Past, Only Mama Knows

My favorite Songs: House of Wax, Mr. Bellamy, The End of the End

-----

12. Wincing the Night Away-The Shins

Songs to Check Out: Phantom Limb, Australia, Sleeping Lessons

My Favorite Songs: Sea Legs, Australia, Phantom Limb

-------

13. The Reminder-Feist

Songs to Check Out: 1234, I Feel it All, My Moon My Man

My Favorite Songs: 1234, Brandy Alexander, I Feel it All

------

14. There Will Be Blood (OS)-Jonny Greenwood

Songs to Check Out: Open Spaces, Future Markets, Eat Him By His Own Light

My Favorite Songs: Prospectors Arrive, Open Spaces, Future Markets

------

15. The Fragile Army-Polyphonic Spree

16. You Are Here-The Newno2

17. Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy-Mum

18. For Emma Forever Ago-Bon Iver

19. Hvarf-Heim-Sigur Ros

20. Saddles-Phuzzbot & the Cavemen

21. 23-Blonde Redhead

I honestly had difficulty getting into Radiohead prior to "In Rainbows", which was finally the clincher for my enjoyment of them. Even after discovering the rest of their back catalog, "In Rainbows" is still my favorite. (I love how you're so passionate for the album that you put up every single track, including Disc 2 :P)

"Neon Bible" isn't quite "Funeral" in my book, but it's still able to be one of my favorite albums of 2007.

A few other favorites:

Yeasayer - All Hour Cymbals

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwUctgGIZJQ]YouTube- Yeasayer - Sunrise[/ame]

One of the great debut albums of the decade.

Travis - The Boy With No Name

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxwIr3LiXCo]YouTube- TRAVIS - Battleships[/ame]

Still my favorite Travis album since "The Man Who".

Interpol - Our Love to Admire

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6oIzvholME]YouTube- Interpol "No I In Threesome"[/ame]

Their weakest album but has a few gems on it.
