Decisions, decisions...

So I'm thinking of changing my major, and I really want to minor or possibly double major in a foreign language. But I'm having a hard time choosing between two -- French and Spanish. I'm really interested in studying French, but where I live, it's not the most useful language to know. It would be a lot more beneficial to study Spanish, and I've already had two years of it during high school, so at least I wouldn't basically be starting from scratch. So what do I choose, the one I'm more interested in, or the one that is more useful to know?

What I'm doing next year is choosing a major I'm slightly less interested in in Psychology because it is practical and a smart move in this economic future as there are a lot of different paths I could follow with that major. I am minoring in my interest of Religion, as there aren't as many job opportunities. My advice is major in something you at least somewhat love but try to find something you feel is more beneficial, in your case Spanish, and minor in something you may love more but may not be as practical. That's my advice.

Well in this case it'll be my minor or second major, I'm going to major in math. :nice:

Okay..and I'm guessing you really love math to make that kind of commitment? (I'd rather have penis surgery than major in math :freak:).

Well then I think you should take Spanish. I agree with you that it is much more practical for use in the U.S. than French, and having fluency in that language can really help you in future job hunts. If you truly love your major and get the satisfaction you want from it, then I believe taking a minor that is not your first choice is something that could be good for you if it is a smart decision (assuming you would still enjoy Spanish). Of course ideally I'd say take whatever you want that will give you the most immediate happiness, but with the future so uncertain, that just wouldn't be wise. I don't want to try to make the decision for you, but if it were me, I'd probably go with Spanish.

Right, I guess what's more important is what will actually be useful when I graduate.

Probably. Best to find a balance between love and practicality.

I vote French

if you're not interested in doing something, there's no point in doing it

so study what you want to :)

it's a tough decision to make because you have to decide between what you love verses what is more applicable.

I think that it would probably be best to take spanish if it would be more beneficial in the long run. I mean you could always learn french on your own or this may be too much work, but what about double minor?

You could always do something completely different and major in wumbology.

It's not like I'd hate learning Spanish, I really like studying other languages, probably even more than math...

You could always go for something that may be better off career wise and then go back to school to get another degree. My math teacher's doing that and is going to get a degree in cooking or being a chef or whatever.

I'd love to do that, but it'd probably be too expensive.

French and Spanish are really similiar, so whichever one you decide on will still give you a foundation to learn the second. Spanish is the fastest growing language in the world, and I heard somewhere that people are predicting that Spanish-speaking people will eventually outnumber English-speaking people in the USA. (Don't quote me on that - my mom told me :P) So I would go with Spanish, and you can pick French up later.

^ Seriously? :uhoh: I'm taking German!

Anyway, I think it would be most beneficial to take Spanish, since you know some of it already. It'll make it a lot easier and less confusing than switching to French. Good luck with whichever you take though! :nice:

The bad thing about minoring in Spanish is that I'd have to start at the intermediate level. I could start at the beginning, but I wouldn't get credit for it.

^^I'm sorry if I'm being a bit slow, but why would that be bad? Wouldn't it be better if it were a bit more advanced?

Because I don't think I know/remember enough to start at the intermediate level.
