The South Korean navy has shot at an unidentified ship in the direction of North Korea in apparent retaliation. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said that it is not clear what caused the ship to sink. A rescue operation is under way to save crew members on board but many sailors are feared dead on the stricken ship. Authorities say the ship began sinking around 10:45 pm local time (1.45pm GMT) in the Yellow Sea. It's better than graduating from Harvard/Yale/Princeton and pretending to stress over nuanced intelligence reports Hamlet-style, only to decide to do precisely the opposite of the thing you should do - which has been American foreign policy in a nutshell since before I was born.

North Korean censorship of information to and from it's civilians is so strong that we know very little about the country and it's attitude towards their government. For all we know they could genuinely love Kim Jong Il, it's been instilled in them and every extra curricular activity they've done since age 3 that their existence is solely to appease their leader and be a cog for their country, it's all they know. Assassinating Kim Jong Il could just lead to a gigantic backlash from the country's military operations and even it's people. Or not. Nobody has a clue. As for American news not reporting this item, CNN has on this side, Bloomberg's reported it with the cause of the ship sinking 'unclear'.

I'm not sure I'd call this kind of love "genuine". And North Korea is the most backwoods, pobuckra country in the world. Their military isn't a marvel of modern technology. I think this is a pretty clear short term costs/ long term gains scenario. It's striking to me the Neocons haven't already jumped on this, but then again they're mostly about appeasing Israel and military welfare. Assassination is too cheap for them, they need to really gorge themselves on the taxpayer's dime.
