Noise Pop and Surf Rock

Featured Replies

I find this genre has gained lots of attention this year with albums from Best Coast, Dum Dum Girls, Beach House, Blonde Redhead, No Age, Sleigh Bells, Wavves, The Drums, Surfer Blood and others.

I know there are some overlaps between the two genres such as Best Coast.

What do people think about these genres? Do they all sound the same?

Think this trend is going to continue and become a trademark sound of this decade?

Also for whatever reason I get really bored by bands in these genres with male vocals (i.e. The Drums) but absolutely love it with female vocals (Best Coast).

Yeah.

FU BRIGGINS!!!! I was just about to make the same thread which I will post here anyway.

Think about it, the year has been jammed packed full of summery releases that make you feel like it's warm breezes and 25 degrees all year round. The list includes Best Coast, The Drums, Dum Dum Girls, Surfer Blood, Wavves, and others who I've forgotten about. Not only have there been a a bunch of beachcore releases but many more beach themed releases as well: The album cover of "Down the Way" - Angus & Julia Stone, a band called "Beach House", an album called "Plastic Beach", and you could probably chuck in Vampire Weekend for good measure.

Anyone else really liking this at the moment?

I personnaly really like this genre! I'm discovering Best Coast right now (thanks to you) and I'm enjoying it as well. It will probably don't last though. They really sound like Dum Dum Girls!

Sometimes I feel like thoses bands aren't given the credit they deserve just because "you know, it's just summer music."! It annoys me! I discovered The Drums during winter and it felt as amazing as it did when I listened to them this summer :snobby:!

Anyway, in response to the actual thread, I am really really really enjoying both the surf rock and the noise pop. The two genres don't sound the same, they are distinctive, but they both do some sort of feel about them that is very refreshing to hear. I think the noise pop will continue throughout the decade but I don't think there will be as many surf rock releases in the years to come. Female vocals are also working really well for me but I love the drums.

Beach House, Blonde Redhead, No Age, Wavves, The Drums, Surfer Blood

i listed and liked those.

it could be a decade trend, who knows, let's give it some more time.

Are Blonde Redhead really in this category?

Drums are ok. Wavves were really annoying to me at Lollapallooza. :\

Blonde Redhead are more dream pop now.

But I find that has a lot of similarities to noise pop.

I find it hard to place some bands in one genre especially when there are so many genres. I find with these two genres there are lots of bands who kind of flirt with both.

Lol at all these bands because they won't last

I like all those artists you listed except for No Age, I hate No Age.

So I guess I could say I'm a fan of the genres.

And they don't sound all the same to me, but some of them are a bit bland.

I don't have too much expertise in these genres. The only albums I have are The Drums' album and Surfer Blood's. Those albums are OK, but they don't really amaze me. I have heard a couple of Beach House tracks and rather liked them, so I might look into them at some point. I once tried listening to Sleigh Bells...yeah, they're not my cup of tea.

Well Blonde Redhead has been around since 1993 so I think they have lasted. However I still don't see them being in this category

Why?

Sure the genres won't be popular for decades to come, but the bands will still be making music? I never understand it when people say that.

Anyway, I really like this Surf Rock stuff. But only some bands have managed to interest me. eg. I really like Best Coast and Wavves, but I find it hard to listen to The Drums and even Beach House...

I like the music, I think the hype that surrounds it is ridiculous, and will only give the bands short-term exposure rather than a steady increase over their careers.

The Drums are a key example. I don't pay much attention to hype as it usually leads to disappointment but I still think sleigh bells are the most incredible thing I've heard this year, aside from teen dream, which is sonically challenging the music scene.

Thier sound has changed.

It has changed. But I still wouldn't put them in the same category as something like Wavves. :\ Just my two cents though.

I really do like Beach House and Blonde Redhead though.. the others listed are ok.

I don't really listen to this genre, and kind of don't want to. The term 'noise' in the genre is a little 'errr' to me.

I should give it a chance.

of those bands listed I only have listened to Beach House and Blonde Redhead, so I don't have much to say on the topic
