How Old Must One Be To Rent A Car in England/UK

Featured Replies

It depends on the kind of car but generally over 18 I would say, also as I've driven in the US alot, I can say it's a different experience driving here, firstly the controls are on the other side of the car because the UK is stubborn and weird and has to be different, secondly most basic rental cars won't be autos so be prepared to be facing 3 pedals and a manual gearbox for likely the first time:P.

Make sure you actually look at the search results (Which aren't helpful) for proper use of that joke in future.

its generally over 21.

:annoyed:

And btw Kat Im 19

most hire companies won't hire to under 21's because of the greater risk of damage to the car. its why most insurance companies set the highest excesses for under 21's. your standard insurance x/s might be £250 but then they quite often add an additional £3/400 to it for an uner 21.

I know Enterprise & Drive Assist definitely don't hire to under 21's.

If any company did hire to you, the chances are it'll cost you a lot of money. Are you going to anywhere in particular in the UK?

Plus you probably need to have a license there. We drive on the wrong side of the road, you know. I don't care how good a driver you are over here, you're gonna get all screwed up and get in an accident over there since you're not used to it.

I'm assuming you are referring to transportation next June... just use the trains, etc. And get used to lots of walking. "Not very far" walk over there is completely different than "not very far" walk over here.

I'd say trains were the best for you but they're also expensive and train drivers are mean :(

I wouldn't say that's true actually, I learnt to drive in the UK and have driven lots in the US and a bit in Europe too and you can adapt quite quickly to driving on different sides of the road and the controls being on different sides of the car, maybe it's more of a forigen concept for Americans I don't know, but it doesn't mean you're going to crash, I'm sure you would get used to it pretty quickly.

I know people who have hired a car at 19 so there are companies that do it for over 18s but that was with a UK Licence, I don't know if the age is higher for people with overseas Licences.

Easycar.com - Generally, most local suppliers have a minimum rental age of 21. Minimum and maximum rental ages and other restrictions vary by location and supplier and there may be supplementary charges for drivers under 30 and over 65. Please check the local terms and conditions before completing your booking.

Hertz - The minimum age for rentals from us in the UK is 25 years of age for all vehicle groups except for Luxury 4 door (H), special 4 door (S66), and Hertz Prestige Collection (HPC ) for which the minimum age is strictly 30 years old.

It is however possible to rent vehicle groups Mini (A), Economy (B), Compact 4-Door © and Compact 2-4 Door ® from 23 years old on payment of a young driver surcharge in the amount of GBP 15.00 (excluding tax) per day with a maximum charge of GBP 150.00 (excluding tax) per rental.

Please click here for more information on age restrictions and for age restrictions in other countries.

Europcar - can't find anything specific but it suggests they don't rent to under 25.

Avis - In the UK, you can rent from Avis when you are 23 years old or over (you will need a driving licence for at least one year and a credit card). A Young Driver Surcharge is applicable for drivers under the age of 25.

They're the bigger chains. Some of the others might rent to younger people, but it might not be economically viable to do so.

so gena you really are following the cloning mission:laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3:
