Illegal music downloads are 'on the rise'

i don't really feel guilty for not buying but like 5% of my music.

music sharing is a beautiful resource that's out there and i take advantage of it.

I love you

But really though, I don't have a problem with illegal downloading at all. It's the way I introduce myself to new music. No one buys CDs before they know any of the songs do they? Besides, if I really enjoy an album, I try to buy it as soon as I can. And then there's always concerts/merchandise. Musicians are doing fine.

I bought Dum Dum Girls album based on the fact they were on Sub Pop and had a cool CD cover.

A Harvard paper on file sharing.

"Changes in technologies for reproducing and redistributing digital goods (e.g., mu-

sic, movies, software, books) have dramatically affected profitability of these goods, and

raised concerns for future development of socially valuable digital products. However,

broader illegitimate distribution of digital goods may have offsetting demand impli-

cations for legitimate sales of complementary non-digital products. We examine the

negative impact of file-sharing on recorded music sales and offsetting implications for

live concert performances. We find that file-sharing reduces album sales but increases

live performance revenues for small artists, perhaps through increased awareness. The

impact on live performance revenues for large, well-known artists is negligible.

Oi, I'll admit I once did the same with a Devendra Banhart album. But in general, it's not really something people do.

I do it quite a lot, buy albums by artists I have no idea what they sound like based on the album cover & titles of tracks

True the majority of the time they are under £2 charity shop bargains, so even if they are shite, I haven't lost much money

I download waaay too much music, to the point where I can't be bothered to buy any of it at all anymore. It's just sooo easy and convenient to download. Sometimes I'll buy an album on iTunes if I can't find a download link anywhere though.

And to me it seems a little bit pointless to buy a CD even of an album that I've listened to a lot and love when I don't even own a CD player; I'll just rip the CD and then it'll sit on my desk collecting dust forever and ever etc. Plus I live in a small town with few places to actually buy CDs, and even at those places, they rarely have what I want. I don't have a credit card so I can't buy them online either. CDs are definitely useful to have for when my laptop dies or whatever though.
