2010-2020: What Bands Will Our Time Be Known For

Featured Replies

When you look back at the history of recorded music out of the many bands that have come and gone there are always a few that define (and are the most strongly associated with) the time they come from. From The Beatles and Stones in the 60s to Pink Floyd and Led Zep in the 70s all the way to U2 and REM in the 80s and Nirvana and Pearl Jam in the 90s...*

In your most honest opinion on the landscape of modern music (not just what bands are your own personal favorite) what bands do you see as being the future "iconic" bands of our era and why? 2000-2010? 2010-2020? Who has the popularity and musical importance to be so lasting?

*the examples that I used are just that... examples. Without doubt there are people that will not agree with them but a debate on the most important bands of those eras is not the pont of this thread.

Muse, Radiohead, and Coldplay are three that I think will continue to influence music for years to come (In the alternative genre at least). I think that most of the fad artists in the top 40 will fade quickly. Lady Gaga is one exception, though. I think she is talented and might stick around long enough to influence pop music for future generations.

sorry, to influence pop music? her music is exactly the same as other pop music.

no hating, i like her. it's just not revolutionary or anything.

^Wrong about Muse and Coldplay as well. Neither of them has really given us anything that hasn't been seen before. They'll be forgotten in time.

2000-2010?

i think you can divide them into two groups. bands who made groundbreaking interesting music and those were really successful.

First group - Arcade Fire, The White Stripes, Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Gorillaz, Sigur Ros, The National and Sufjan Stevens

Second group - Coldplay, Muse, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon, The Killers, Snow Patrol and Green Day.

i would like Arctic Monkeys to be remembered for many years to come but they seem to be on the nose a little after their last album.

2010-2020?

well hardly 18 months in thats very hard to predict. i think Arcade Fire will continue to thrive and Mumford & Sons have a very bright future ahead as does Florence and the Machine. the 00s were a pretty unsuccessful period for aussie bands so i hope the ones doing well now continue to do so, like Temper Trap and Tame Impala.

Well it depends on where you live. For a start I'd disagree with your suggestions for 90's in this country, but that is likely to be because they are American. In truth though, most people in this country don't know who Pearl Jam are. Here 90's was Brit Pop. Oasis and Blur and then also other bands like Massive Attack, Portishead, then Aphex Twin, then Primal Scream, . So it depends massively on where you live and what you listen to.

I don't believe we can answer 2010-2020 because so many bands fade away so easily, even after amazing first, or first two albums, such as The Strokes and Kings of Leon (though both can have the start of the last decade for me). As has been mentioned I don't think Arctic Monkey's will keep it up and they were seen as the best new band for aaaaaaaages. My guesses on current success would be Adele (unfortunately)

2000-2010 I'll say Radiohead (even though in the mainstream they are more of a 90's band, their way of releasing music may be remembered), Arcade Fire (who seem to be on their way out creatively but may form a nice bond with the mainstream a la Kings Of Leon), The White Stripes, Libertines (despite their lack of material they will be remembered for the stories if not anything else), Gorillaz (due to the unusual nature of their 'members'), Kanye West, Eminem and Jay-Z (and possibly even Snoop Dogg, though I'm unsure of how much people associate him with the 90's, I know I do) for rap, pop will have Beyonce, Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga (possibly for her outfits but unlikely for her music) and Rihanna.

I think that decade will be where the likes of Radiohead, Beck, Portishead, Massive Attack and Bjork made themselves 'iconic' for longevity, consistency and innovation, even though they each began and released some of their best work (the mainstream may argue) in the 90's.

It's quite hard to do this without bias.

I don't think you can answer 2010-2020 yet simply since this new decade has only begun.

But for 2000-2009 I'd agree with pretty much all the bands that you listed but also would add bands/artists like Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Daft Punk too.

I also it heavily depends on your area. Like you mentioned Blur and Oasis, as well as the others... here although they are known, they are not really that popular at all. However if you bring up bands like Pearl Jam, Dave Matthews Band or Red Hot Chili Peppers all of those are huge here.

Radiohead.

I'd like Animal Collective to be but people just think they're a hipster band so :(

I don't think they are a hipster band I know they are a hipster band :smug: :P

I'd agree for the most part. I think that Coldplay and Muse will continue to be extremely popular bands throughout this upcoming decade. I'd also agree with Lady Gaga perhaps too. I mean I don't really remember an artist that got as big as her in such a little bit of time especially seeming to come out of nowhere. Though who knows, perhaps she might only have an initial popular effect

^Wrong about Muse and Coldplay as well. Neither of them has really given us anything that hasn't been seen before. They'll be forgotten in time.

I would have to disagree. I think that they seem to be more of the two popular artists of the alternative genre. So being that of course there will be a lot of bands trying to copy them (Keane)

Animal Collective are a hipster band.

So are Deerhunter.

Doesn't mean I don't like some of what each do.

but both have long lost their alternative tags. if anything both seem to be largely despised by the alternative music community.

i like my method of the two groups :smug:

Indeed.

Also, how are Animal Collective hipster? (I have a feeling I might regret asking this question...)

Exactly. It's all about who influences the way new bands sounds.

I feel the same way about MGMT...

MGMT? Hipster?

...

AAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHA.

I totally forgot to add Sigur Ros and Gorillaz to my list  I agree with those two! I also agree that Florence and the Machine and Mumford & Sons are some great up and coming bands that have a chance to really make some groundbreaking music. I can't wait to hear more from them. :D

The fact that you would say that when MGMT are completely NOT hipster. That's what's funny.

MGMT are too mainstream to be considered hipster.

Mumford & Sons haven't done anything new at all. They are just like a million pub bands in Ireland, they just got a little lucky. The new album will be the same, and if it isn't then people won't like it. If they do it will be a new group of people and it will be even worse.

Florence & The Machine stand a chance of creating something more unique and long lasting but it's early days and they haven't done anything spectacular yet. Certainly one who might do though, for their fans anyway.

I never said they were" hipster". I said people THINK they are.

Well, they're stupid. Anyone who gets nominated for a Grammy isn't anything close to being hipster.

MGMT are too mainstream to be considered hipster.

Precisely.

Animal Collective on the other hand seem to revel in sabotaging some of their work in order to seem cool. Overproduction and too many layers pad out some of their lesser works, but people still lap it up. Now that is hipster. Good band though.

Yeah, they are. I will say this, though: Never again will I watch any of their music videos. I just...it's awful. :wreck:

Regarding Mumford & Sons, it will be interesting to hear their second album. They'll have to release it soon if they want it to be as big as the last one (and they strike me as the type who would want a commercially praised album, which is fair enough) as their genre will not be as 'mainstream' next time around since you can only fool people that you are different simply because of a banjo for so long. Their fans who don't have a deep rooted interest in the genre already will be onto whatever the new flavour of the month is by then.

I don't see what the big deal is about being different, honestly. I listen to what sounds good. I don't care how mainstream it is; if I like it, I like it.
