2010-2020: What Bands Will Our Time Be Known For

Featured Replies

and they've completely alienated and lost a massive part of their fan base in their last two albums.

it is rather sad that people consider 'hipster' as a genuine genre of music.

It is.....

I don't know why people hate it!

Radiohead have a large following than just hipsters.

radiohead fans are mostly snobs, not hipsters

I love you all cping RH fans :P

And yeah, Coldplay, Muse, RH, etc aren't 2010-2020 bands. They're more like 2000-2010 bands (well, RH is a 90's band)

there are plenty of reason but you probably don't want to hear them.

RH have been just as dominant in the 00s as they were in the 90s. Kid A + In Rainbows v The Bends + OK Computer. pretty close battle if you ask me.

animal collective are not a hipster band because

Because

a) They were around before the modern hipster

b) The hipster trend hasn't affected the way they write/produce songs

c) They like hip hop

d) SWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAG

(my friend wrote this when i told him about this thread...)

They are a hipster band, because the majority of people that seem to love and obsess over them are hipsters.

You saved yourself right at the end there

or maybe they just have decent taste in music..............

I'm not saying I don't like them because I enjoy their music quite a bit. But their fans annoy the hell out of me.

rather ironic coming from a radiohead fan :P

Coldplay for sure

and probably muse but not so worldwide

Is this as an overall, or specifically for each genre? Because each genre would have different 'iconic' bands. But if overall, I think the mainstream ones are going to dominate what 2010-2020 is known for. Of course, there will be Arcade Fire and Radiohead and all those us people listen to, but really, I think it boils down to the genre and own personal opinions. Those who don't listen to Radiohead wouldn't find them famous, but instead could find someone like Bruno Mars as iconic.

And I guess in 50 years down the road, when the music played on radios these days will be like how the 60s is to us, the mainstream ones are going to be played more than the hipster ones. I'm not siding mainsteam, but they are obviously more known among people. And the fact that they're more known would probably make them more known as the music icons of our generation.

Then again, it varies with each listener.

i partially agree with you here. but i think to be iconic you need to release a string of major hit singles and/or albums over a period of time. i can see someone like Beyonce being popular with several generations to come because she's had so many big hits over a long period of time. more so than Bruno Mars unless of course he maintains his popularity over the next decade.

Mm yes, you're right. I agree.

ok , I'm getting it a bit ...

But is there a specific recognizable thing they wear or something ?

Like the mod's in the 60' "wore green parka's drove with vespa's and listened to The Who .. "

^^ If I read that , the majority of Belgian students are hipsters ! :wreck:

I still don't get why people hate them tho...

Who do they hurt? what do they kill ?

and why would you want to name people , a term ... Can't you be a bit of everything ?

I find hipsters annoying simply because it seems like they're trying too hard to be different and or "cool". Why can't you just be yourself, ya know?

Because they are ****s, for the most part.

Also because they annoy me on nights out, enjoy playing the victim, and then later thinking they are cool because they do a little bit of ketamine even though they can't handle it.

They are the equivalent of what Jarvis Cocker sang about in Common People. Fair enough they are trying to 'create their own scene' but they are failing and doing it in the most dickish way possible.

Who look down on others.

Fuck them looking down on me when I'm looking down on them, for reasons that don't even have to include the fact that they are looking down at me.

They don't even realise people look down on them.

oh okay then ,

Sorry , that I understand it so difficult , but in Belgium , 'Hipster' is

used for young people in general ...

and yeah , there are a lot of hipsters here , after trying to understand what they are :wreck:

It is mainly a fashion and lifestyle thing. I feel sorry for the bands who get caught up in it. Unless I don't like them all too much, or their fans are really precious about them like Animal Collective fans. I like Animal Collective, but it amuses me how much it hurts their die hard fans when they hear it.
