1. "Green eyes, I'd run away with you/Green eyes, 'cuz I'm a fool." The voice of the guy is a bit weird to me, but it's tolerable. The music helps. "But so what? Who gives a fuck?" Sorry if it seems I'm paying attention to lyrical content so much, but that's what I got out of this track (as well as some of the others, actually). "Why my own friends hate me, but I don't give a shit." This song has a bit of a...grunge feel? I don't think that's the right way to put it, but I can't think of a better term. Interesting opener. It's OK, I suppose.

2. It's "Drops in the River" by Fleet Foxes. I approve. There's not much more to say about this one.

3. It starts with some low sounds. (I think double bass is part of it, but I can't be too sure.) It comes in with this guitar thing, and it has effects that remind me of Nirvana's music or something. Fortunately, this isn't Nirvana, as the vocalist isn't Kurt Cobain, or even a man. This is a really interesting track, with the contrast in sounds between the instruments and the vocalist's style. The guitar ditty in the middle is pretty catchy. The vocalist sounds somewhat familiar, but I don't think it's someone I listen to regularly.

4. This is "You Are the Blood" by Sufjan Stevens. Great compilation, great song. Enough said.

5. "GA GA GA" Lady Gaga, maybe? I'm not sure, as I don't really listen to her unless I'm forced to do so. "I want your whiskey mouth all over my blonde south./Red wine, cheap perfume, and a filthy mouth." Oh dear. D: That's not what I expected to hear right off the bat. Actually, with these lyrics, I'm changing my mind. I think this might be more along the lines of Ke$ha or something. Please tell me if I'm wrong. Lyrically, this is a bit too bluntly raunchy for my tastes.

6. ARGH. Joanna Newsom. I can't stand her. I never could. I've tried. Really, I have. Her voice just grates me to no end. I have respect for her as a harpist (which seems hard to play), but her singing...I just can't. Sorry.

7. This is "Holocene" by Bon Iver. From what I've read, this is a favorite from the new album, and I cna understand why. It's so pretty.

8. It starts off with bells and some other cutesy little things. That's what I think of this song, really. It's just really happy-sounding and charming. I like this one quite a bit.

9. This is an instrumental of sorts. It has drumset and guitars. It reminded me of Broken Social Scene, but when I went to see if it was them, I realized it wasn't, so I'm kinda interested to see who this is. I thought this was a great follow-up to the previous track.

10. MMMMM. "Gospel" by The National. Once again, you have my approval. BERNINGERRRRR.

11. OK, so this was the track that kinda glitched on me. I ended up finding out this was "Look at Miss Ohio" by Gillian Welch. The only thing I knew about her beforehand was her collaboration with Conor Oberst on his song "Lua" from the "Dark Was the Night" compilation. (Honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of Bright Eyes. His voice is not for me.) Anyway, while this song has a bit of a country feel to it, it's not to the point where I feel it is country. That's good, because I hate country. It's interesting. It's a grower, really. I like more with each listen.

12. "Money, money, money, money." Actually, I'm pretty sure this is Lady Gaga. This definitely sounds like her, and the music fits what I expect. 'I'll dance, dance, dance with my hands, hands, hands above my head, head, head like Jesus said." If I have to give her credit for anything, it's the string stuff in there, because I appreciate that. Too bad that scream before the 2nd verse pretty much turned me off. I guess the song's OK. I'm not overwhelmingly in love with it, but I'm tolerating it OK. I'd definitely listen to this above Joanna Newsom, no doubt.

13. After the beginning "na na na naaahs," it goes into this lovely walking bass line. The vocals (there's a man and a woman, maybe more people) fit well with the style of this song. Parts of this give me some sort of surf rock vibe or something. "Hold on, I'm coming, coming back to the pool." Is that right? That's what it sounded like. Anyway, if it is surf rock, it's not enough so to make me dislike it. Surf rock has the tendency to bore me, for some reason.

14. This is a piano track with a woman singing. At least, I think it's a woman. That would be great. She has a lovely low range for a woman. As a person with a low voice, I'm often really self-conscious about that, and hearing other women with lower voices makes me feel better about it. Anyway, while the song is really sad (particularly the lyrics), I really like this song a lot.

15. This was a little instrumental with piano and string instruments. This is pretty much the perfect way to close a tape. I love this so much.

To give you an overall assessment of your tape, while there were a few tracks that obviously weren't to my taste, there was a good chunk of stuff that I liked about it. I can't wait to see the track listing from you. Nice tape.

I'd definitely listen to this above Joanna Newsom, no doubt.

:disappointed:

Oh, and I'm gonna post the tracklisting soon.

I'M SORRY, WILL. I'VE TRIED. :bigcry:

Lore's Review

1. It begins with an electronic track. It starts off very calm, and it returns to that at some point, but after the beginning section, it goes into this rhythmic groove that just grabs me and makes me imagine this would make a good dance track in a club or something. (Not that I'd know about that, given I don't go to clubs, but anyway...) While I felt there were a few times when I felt it dragged on (mainly when the female vocals came in after the 4-minute mark and repeatedly sang "a cryyyyyyy", which got annoying), I liked it a lot more than I expected to. It's catchy.

Four Tet, Love Cry. When I made the mixtape I was a bit addicted to this song so I thought it'd be a nice start for the mixtape :wacky:

2. This was a shorter track. It sounded like some weird world music thing to me. The woman's voice irritated me. I didn't care too much for this one.

Yeah I hated the album at first but I like it more now :blank: so I get why you dislike it. It's ∞∞∞ by Gang Gang Dance

3. This basically reminded me of a '70s track. It's not, but it has that sort of flavor. Or is it? I don't know. It was really interesting, and I liked it.

No, actually it's Toro y Moi- New Beat. It has this retro vibe which I really enjoy :wacky:

4. This was a short little ambient track. I thought it was very peaceful. The person talking kinda gave it something else. I don't know, it felt right.

Untitled - Burial. I wanted to find something short to end with the first part of the mixtape so that's the only reason I added it really :P I was in a weird mood when I made this mixtape

5. This track was really kinda spacey to me. Like, as I was listening to this, I could imagine myself floating or something. The vocalist reminded me a lot of Beck, but I don't think it's him. Anyway, I really liked this track.

It is Beck (Movie Theme) :cheesy: I love him :dazzled:

6. This is "Fireworks" by Animal Collective. I have a special connection with this song. It's the first Animal Collective song I heard. I heard it on a mixtape one of my uni friends made me, and he mentioned to me that this is his favorite song ever because it reminds him of how he'd listen to this song walking on campus freshman year and embracing his newfound independence. It's kinda cool, really.

This is such a happy song, it makes me thing of spring somewhat :wacky:

7. The only complaint I could even think to place on this song is that it was incredibly short. I wanted to hear more than 2 minutes worth of music. This track is so adorable. "It's not a house anymore." :wacky:

This is Deerhunter (Memory Boy), if you're not into them you should get one of their albums

8. "1, 2, 3, 4. 1, 2, ready, go." This ended up being some song about a ship or something. It contrasts from the previous track in style. Track 7 was a cute upbeat tune, and this is slow and melancholic. I can't help but think the voice sounds familiar. Anyway, I like this, although not as much as the track before it.

This is EMA - The Grey Ship, I really like female voices now and she has an amazing one :wacky:

9. This is "Last Night at the Jetty" by Panda Bear. In some ways, I like Panda Bear more than Animal Collective. I'm not sure why. Anyway, I've been listening to a bit of Panda Bear in recent days ("Tomboy" in particular), so good for you.

Panda Bear :dazzled:

I know this tape wasn't made for me, and I know you thought I wouldn't like it, but I do. I really do. There were things I didn't like about it, sure (mainly Track 2), but it's a solid tape, and I think your original recipient would approve of it. Good job, and I can't wait to see the track listing.

Thanks for listening to it, I was worried because I thought you'd hate it  I'm glad you like it :wacky:

YAY, IT WAS BECK. :cheesy:

It's kinda weird, because with a couple of these, I've listened to something before and didn't like it. Chris had a Burial track on his, and I thought it was boring. :| I liked that one a lot better. Maybe it's because it was short? I was surprised that one song was a Deerhunter track. I remember listening to something and finding it to be a bit "meh."

So yeah, you've shown me that I might need to re-evaulate a couple of things. Thanks!

OK. I feel dumb. Here's why.

1. The two Lady Gaga tracks obviously sounded like they were her. I don't know why I said the first one was Ke$ha.

2. Apparently, I haven't listened to Warpaint enough.

3. I searched through ALL my BSS stuff (including "Feel Good Lost") to make sure it wasn't them, and yet it was. How did I miss that?

There's only two words that can explain these things. HERP DERP.

:disappointed:

wow Eddie likes my mixtape I feel like a cool kid now :awesome: :P

maybe i'll give reminders to those that haven't reviewed in the next day or two. and if we don't get a response maybe I can just post links and who it is... though... some people didn't sent me tracklistings :|

sorry if this mixtape exchange is a failure :bigcry:

That would be great if you can do so ;)

here's a review

Track 1: The song opens with talking and background music begins to come in. The build up works well with the talking. The song then breaks into a sort of punkish kind of sound with very raw vocals. It definitely seems like a good opening song for a mix so far. The song sounds pretty intense overall. I do feel the song though is kind of long.

Been listening to these guys a lot lately, Titus Andronicus. A punk rock band from NJ who's last album was based on the civil war, I think it was in Pitchfork's top 10. "A More Perfect Union"

Track 2: Song starts with some muted guitar and drums. The song then breaks into a full sound. The vocals sound a little familular. So far I'm not sure if I fully like it so far, because it sort of reminds me a lot of rock music that I often hear on the radio.

Another NJ band, Springsteen-diciples The Gaslight Anthem. Probably would have left this off if I were to make the mix now, though.

Track 3: The song starts with a swing kind of drum beat as well as a delayed sounding guitar. Then comes in a few vocals on the side of some kids singing. The song itself is not to bad. And so far I like this the most.

That's actually the band singing, not kids :blank: they're a four piece girl band from LA called WarPaint.

Track 4: The vocals sounds really familular with this song. Not sure if I'm a huge fan of the song to be honest. I think the musicians are talented, but in terms of the songs I don't know if it's the kind of song I like. I do really like the song a lot when it gets very quiet. The arrangement is great.

A local band I've been listening to a lot lately. from their one and only release, an EP.

Track 5: The song starts off kind of minimalistic w/ vocals and just a single instrument. The vocals remind me a little bit of Death Cab for Cutie. The song gets good for me I guess during the bridge when the cello comes in. But overall not a huge fan.

Pre-DCFC. Built To Spill's first single "Car"

Track 6: This is the Interlude #1 of the mix. To be honest I really like this a lot. the sounds are really good and the classical guitar works really well too. This might be my favorite track so far. I really like it a lot

Six Organs Of Admittance - Brilliant Blue Sea Between Us.

Track 7: Starts with an acoustic guitar. The song itself is very folky which I really like. Vocally I'm not too sure about, but it still works well. Very nice song. The overall arrangement and feel of the song is really good. I really like this song a lot

The result of living several years alone in camping wagon. Josh T. Pearson - Woman, When I've Raised Hell. A painfully honest album, but great.

Track 8: This song starts with drums and a guitar. The vocals are very country and folky. The the singer keeps singing America over and over. I sort of imagine a guy with a cowboy hat and a flag shirt. I'm not a huge fan of this to be honest. I just in general find songs that talk about countries like this one to be annoying. However I do like the bit when the distorted guitar comes in the best. I really like the rhythm of the song, though the vocals do annoy me

Well, if it makes you feel any better he's an ironic British raised lo-fi hero  At one point he sings "Vietnam, Iraq, Native America." Anyway, Bill Callahan (aka Smog) - America!

Track 9: The song starts off and reminds me of Sigur Ros with the organ. The song then comes in with some acoustic guitar. The song is very delicate and vocals come in. Honestly just from this bit so far initially I really love the song a lot so far. The later some drums come in and the make the song sound a bit more full with some electric guitars coming in putting in a few fills as well as some background vocals. This song really sounds great overall. It may be my favorite off the mix. It seems like a pretty emotional song, not only with the arrangement but the vocals and lyrics.

NME compared them to Fleet Foxes so I though I'd give them a listen. This one's called Bible Belt so I thought it was appropriate for the mix. They haven't released an album yet, but they have a couple of EPs out. The album's due this fall.

Track 10: The song has a very country feel to it with the vocals and use of banjo. I picture an old man sitting on his porch singing this song. To me this seems like a good sounding song to end a mix with. I'm normally not much of a fan of country music, but I actually enjoy this song in it's simplicity.

I think he's around 20, actually  The Low Anthem - I'll Take Out Your Ashes

Track 11: The track opens with an acoustic guitar picking. The vocals come in and remind me of a combination of Jeff Buckley and the lead singer of Timber Timbre. The vocals are really impressive and I like the overall mix of it. I really like this song a lot as it progresses. There comes in some synth strings and the song gets to sound pretty emotional. The strings work really well and are quite moving even though they have a synth sound to it. This is another song off the mix that is one of my favorites.

This is the oldie, actually. Mickey Newbury's most well-know work, An American Trilogy. A man before his time.

Track 12: This is the 2nd and last Interlude of the mix. The song starts off really great. I love the overall mix of the guitars, piano, drums and bass. It just sounds so full and has a spacey sound. To me I picture this song sort of being recorded in the 60's, though it sort of has a modern vintage feel to it. I really love this song a lot. It might be one of, if not my favorite song off the mix thus far.

Found this on an Uncut CD compiled by Robin Pecknold. Dungen - Fredag (Friday)

Track 13: The mix starts with electronic drums. I really like the overall mix, and the sound of this song. The vocals work extremely well in the mix. This is a really great song, honestly another song that I would add to my favorites on the mix. Is this also Bon Iver that makes a vocal appearance? This song honestly is really great overall. Can't wait to see who this is by.

Thought you'd like this. It is indeed Bon Iver, singing with Gayngs. They're a 20 or so collective from various bands around Minneapolis. This is from they're only album Relayted which came out last year, they've toured a bit since and played Coachella.

Track 14: The song opens with some drums that sound distant. Then the song really opens up and sounds very full with vocals that sound a little familuar but I can't put my finger on it. I do really like the overall feel of the song though. It's really great.

You said you wanted to get into Elbow, so here's a start. Can't Stop from their debut.

Track 15: This song is heavy on drums which sound good. But from the vocals and overall feel of the song I'm not much a fan of it.

Maybe not the best way to get into The World/Inferno Friendship Society, didn't actually listen to the song before I put it on. Cabaret Punk band from Brooklyn.

Track 16: The song opens with some shakers and electronic piano. Then come in some female vocals that sound very distant and spacey. The vocals are pretty impressive. Then comes in some more electronic sounds, and synths that make the song more full. I really like this one.

Glad you liked it :awesome: My favorite Norwegian artist, Susanne Sundfør. Her album The Brothel was big in Norway, but never really made it big abroad. It's really great.

Track 17: After a long journey we've finally made it to the last song. The song opens sort of how the mix ended with there being talking. The song has a bit of piano and synths with a female vocalist. There's also background vocals that come in. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the song, but the ending vocals are good.

Kate Bush - Hello Earth

Overall I enjoyed the mix. It gave me mixed feelings however. Some songs I really liked a lot, while other songs not too much. I did like how there was a change in genres throughout the mix. But to be honest certain bits (especially the first Part I wasn't a huge fan of since it was more country/folky. Also in terms of length I felt that it went on a bit too long. I do though really appreciate all the time you put into the mix because it looks like it took a long time. Also I really thought it was creative how the mix was split into 3 parts w/ 2 interludes. Nicely done! :D

Well, I'm glad you liked a lot of it, I threw it together pretty quickly cause it was around graduation. If I were to make it again now I'd leave off a few songs. There are definitely a few artists worth checking out :)

Still wondering who my mixtape maker is..........

Dry the River  Heard that debut LP won't be out until next year :(

  • 2 weeks later...

How soon do we want to put this together?

I do want to give ourselves ample time to rest between exchanges. With all the extra reviews I did, I feel as if I'm just finishing up with this last one. I guess we could wait a couple of weeks, then see how it goes from there.

Count me in for the next exchange :snobby:

EDIT: End of August? Never mind :disappointed:

End of august is a bad time for me too. It would be best if it were in the next few weeks.

end of August = fall semester begins = busy

But I don't know, it's up to what you guys think the best.
