I hope someone will, I missed out on this one and really want to do another one.

Whoahhhh, keen people are keen. Not to say that I wouldn't do it. I'll be on holidays then :D

Apologies for my late review, but here it is finally. My mixtape is called “Dunno my arse from my Elbow” with artwork depicting said graphic

Overall I really liked the tape, it sounded a lot like kiwi/aussie lo-fi and indie. My favorite tracks would be 4, 5, 6 and 9, It’s got a nearly perfect flow. Great work!

Hi, I made this tape. :D Obviously, us both being massive Elbow fans, that gave me the foundation to work on :)

I'm glad you liked it overall, and I'm glad you thought it flowed well, I didn't really put that much time into the tracklist as I normally do, I just kind of chucked something together this time. Anyway, ummm, I don't think there's any Aussie music on here, it's mostly British/American...

Track 1: “this is the initial track” Sounded like Glasvegas at first, but very obviously not. Guitar’s probably the culprit there. There’s a whining guitar in there that sort of reminds of The National’s Abel, and some Jonsi like vocals in between. Can’t tell whether the singer American or Australian, but I’d guess Aussie.

American. Thought this made for a nice opener, cos I like the intro. The band's called the Airborne Toxic Event. I guess the Jonsi-like vocal is the girl backup singer.

Track 2: “nice whistling” Nice little acoustic tune, reminds me a bit of some of Simon And Garfunkel. I’m a big fan of troubadour music, and this ain’t too far away from that. Reminds me a bit of The Tallest Man On Earth...

I recently gave Graham Coxon's solo work a listen and this was one of the stand-out highlights, just a nice, pretty acoustic thing. I didn't like most of his stuff that I heard cos his accent is too annoying :(

Track 3: “this fella sounds like BRANDON FLOWERS” He does, and I don’t really like either singer. This is Noah And The Whale – L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N. Not too fond of the song or the album. It’s pretty bland.

Yeah, I got the album recently, kind of on a whim really. I really only like this song and Tonight's The Night. I haven't really played much of the rest of the album, as you say it's nowt special.

Track 4: “you’ve probs heard this before” Indeed I have, this is my favorite Fleet Foxes song :awesome: Beautiful arrangement, I love the layered vocals. I think this is one of the best covers I’ve heard, can’t wait to see who it is!

I used to really like Fleet Foxes. Now I still like them, but I find them a bit repetitive and same-y. This is a nice little cover I ripped from somewhere, but I'm not a massive fan of the slightly over-the-top vocals. They're called First Aid Kit, I think they're Swedish.

Track 5: “a song about death, i think” for some reason this reminds me kiwi music my dad plays. Who knows, maybe it is? The tune is sort of gothic to me. I love the lo-fi guitar bit toward the end. Would sort of envision this being American, but would bet it’s Aussie.

Neither, they're British. This is one of my favourite songs of theirs, mostly cos I love the guitar/cello bow thing on it. It does have a dark, gothic feel to it. It's The Coral, and more people should listen to 'em, if you ask me, so if you liked this you should definately check out the rest of this album :-)

Track 6: “a classic aka an oldie” THIS is Simon and Garfunkel :P Cecilia. A great song. I hadn’t heard it before, though. I have a 3 CD collection with Sounds Of Silence, Bookends and one more. I love how it’s probably a whole lot older than a lot of the other tracks but still melts right in. Timeless.

Yup, timeless. I love Simon & Garfunkel, even tho I just don't listen to them as much as I should. I love how you can listen to stuff like this and hear how it has influenced and shaped loads of other bands since. Beautiful.

Track 7: “sorry about the swearing” Swearing is fine. Actually didn't notice it. Is this Foals? Cause I feel like I’ve heard it before, and it’s got that indie-pop guitar sound to it  I might be wrong. I saw their stream from Coachella but don’t really know too much of their stuff. Good bassline as well.

No not Foals. Arctic Monkeys. I've never been much interested in them until I heard the new album, which is pretty amazing. This song's probably my current fave of theirs, the lyrics are a bit mental. The swearing was - sing another fuckin shalalalalala - I love that line. :-)

Track 8: “i hope you like guitars #1” I do like guitar, especially this guitar. Reminds me a bit of the bassline to Come As You Are. I like the accompanying organ even more. Bottoms up!

This is The Coral again. I couldn't choose between these two songs of theirs so I put 'em both on. I think they'd be well happy with a Nirvana comparison.

Track 9: “keyboards stolen from The Birds” This guy sounds a lot like Robyn Hitchcock, so maybe Soft Boys? He’s pretty definitely Liverpoolian, though. Catchy song, I like it a lot!

Ummm no, they're from Leicestershire, I think - The Midlands, not Liverpool. Actually I think this guy sounds more Southern England. I'd have understood if you'd have noticed the Liverpudlian accent in the previous track :-\ (The Coral are from The Wirral) but anyway accents aside.... these are called The Young Knives, or just Young Knives. I've only got their recent, third album so don't know much about them, but it's a decent album. Not bad. If you like this song, give Love My Name a listen too, that's a really good one.

Track 10: “you said you like piano” I do! I sat a while trying to figure out what this reminded me of, and came the conclusion that it was a small Norwegian band. The piano part was maybe a bit cheesy with the string section and all, would have worked better without. Sounded a bit like a softer version of Muse.

Cheesy! Muse! ohmygod /offended :P

The string section is an integral part of this rather amazing Canadian band. This is one of their calmer tracks, but really everything they do is beautiful imo. They are called Hey Rosetta!

Track 11: “a song about blankets” Sounds a bit like an 80’s ballad :\ don’t like this at all, those strings are just too much, sorry.

haha I guess it does sound a bit 80s. But it's really upbeat and bouncy. This guy is the singer of The Guillemots, Fyfe Dangerfield.

Track 12: “I hope you like guitars #2” Sounds a lot like track 5, sort of gothic American (though it’s probably Aussie). I love the chorus. It’s one of those that you know is great, cause you swear you've heard it before.

Miles Kane - he has had loads of comparisons with The Coral cos they have the same 60s influences, similar guitar techniques, they're all from the same town and he's James Skelly's cousin, so kind of hard to avoid those comparisons really. This whole album is chockfull of really catchy, soulful, really great tunes.

Track 13: “another song about dying” Acoustic guitar song with slightly philosophical lyrics, about dying. I like it, but there’s just something about that style of writing that bugs me. Idk.

Same band as Track 1. I wanted to start the tape with Track 1 but then I thought this song fitted in more with your music tastes, I couldn't decide between the two so I stuck 'em both on. It's quite pretty this song, I thought you might like it, but it's ok that you didn't, it does feel a little slow.

Track 14: “this is the final track, see what I did there” clever  One of those songs with a memorable tune, like Rabbit Will Run. I like the anthemic part towards the end, before the crescendo…and after…sounds like Madrugada..Actually reminded me a bit of Revolution played slower over a stronger acoustic guitar, and Elbow's Coming Second.

Fancied a dramatic conclusion and what's more dramatic than Kasabian's The Doberman. This song's breath-taking. I love it.

Thaks for listening & reviewing

I LOVE that Fleet Foxes cover by First Aid Kit! I saw that on youtube a couple of weeks back. I'mma download the mixtape (almost) just for that :awesome:

Nice mixtape though, lots of good tunes in there :D

Hi, I made this tape. :D Obviously, us both being massive Elbow fans, that gave me the foundation to work on :)

This is the last bleedin' time I'm gonna try to pinpoint dialects.

I used to really like Fleet Foxes. Now I still like them, but I find them a bit repetitive and same-y. This is a nice little cover I ripped from somewhere, but I'm not a massive fan of the slightly over-the-top vocals. They're called First Aid Kit, I think they're Swedish.

I think I actually heard the dialect in there so +1 dialect to me.

Completely agree.

Cheesy! Muse! ohmygod /offended :P

The string section is an integral part of this rather amazing Canadian band. This is one of their calmer tracks, but really everything they do is beautiful imo. They are called Hey Rosetta!

One of those bands everybody talks well about but that I really don't care for.

Fancied a dramatic conclusion and what's more dramatic than Kasabian's The Doberman. This song's breath-taking. I love it.

Thought it might be them. Ok song, though I don't like them.

Should probably guessed it was you :p anyway, thanks

yeah can't we just do these constantly

Once a month at the very least would be nice

Meh,

I just want a review :(

I want another one, maybe I won't chicken out this time. :P

Once a month at the very least would be nice

Yeah, even if there were only say, 10 people it would be cool.

Here's my review for Chris' tape.

Before I start, I'd like to say how clever (and amusing) it was for you to name the tracks the way you did. :awesome: I was able to see some of the info, but it didn't affect my opinion of the tape any, so it's whatever. Anyway, here we go.

1. "Paranoid Android"-I LOL'd so hard when I realized this was actually "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall." Given that I pretty much took it as such, I'm going to assume this was a troll track and congratulate you for it. If not, well, you should still be happy that I got so much joy from it.

2. "Lick My Love Pump"-This was an interesting track. It consisted of what sounded like a foreign family having a dinner conversation with piano in the background. One of the speakers sounded like Jónsi to me, but unfortunately, I'm pretty sure that's not him. As unconventional as this track is, I really like it.

3. "Bitches Ain't Shit"-"Alright now. Shhh. I have the nicest surprise for you, but you first must wash your hands and get ready." :wtf: This turned out to be a bizarre story about a boy named Hip-Hop interspersed into an electronic track. "The flowers liked Hip-Hop, and Hip-Hop liked the flowers. He lived with his sister, Skip-Hop, and his brother, Slide-Hop." I was kinda WTF at first, but I like it because it's so different. It reminds me of Pogo, actually.

4. "Yellow"-We take a trip from electronic to folk. Even if it weren't from the album art that I saw, I would've probably thought this was Andrew Bird due to a comment Sara made in this thread about how he whistles. I've never really taken a listen to him before, but I quite like this. The track is really kinda cute.

5. "Barbie Girl"-This went back to electronic. I got kinda bored with this one, honestly, because it didn't really go much of anywhere. It layered a little bit, and it did change at one point (about halfway, I believe), but it went right back. It's not bad; it just didn't really appeal to me. Sorry.

6. "Some Say Love"-I know this one. It's "I'll Try Anything Once" by The Strokes. I've only gotten into them recently (from the last exchange, actually), but I rather like them. Somehow, Julian Casablancas reminds me of Alex Kapranos when he sings on this particular track. That's probably a stupid thing to say, but it's true. Anyway, yeah. Nice.

7. "I'm My Own Grandpa"-This is a more ambient/experimental track. It reminds me of Eksi Ekso, actually, which is good because I've been rather into them lately. I can't help but feel this sounds familiar. I'm not really sure why. Anyway, I like it.

8. "Barbie Girl"-It has this ambiguous and ambient intro. Then, acoustic guitar comes in and removes all uncertainty. This is a very nice and very calm instrumental number. I like it.

9. "Beautiful Day"-I feel the need to say right away that this was my favorite track on this whole tape. It grabbed my attention from the beginning and held all the way to the end. I saw the album art, and I was really excited. A friend of mine has talked a lot about Wye Oak, and now, I understand why. This song is amazing. It has nice texture, I like the jazz organ, and it's just something that I know I would listen to. This track is a home run.

10. "Fuck the Pain Away"-This one reminded me of Thom's solo work. It's probably the beats; they sound like something he would use. The track somehow seems to work for me. I'm not sure why. When the vocals came in, I was reminded of Björk. Is this her, by chance? Just a guess.

11. "Do They Know It's Christmas"-This contrasts completely with the previous track. It's a folky tune. It's so adorable! "Settle on your own, sweeping dust from stone, with a letter from home." It's so happy, it's almost corny. Understand that I mean that in a good way. It's just...cute.

12. "Sex and Candy"-It starts with acoustic guitar that continually loudens and softens, almost like it's timed. I like the contrast. Awww, clarient. How charming. I think that made me think about Sufjan Stevens for a moment, as he tends to do that in some of his music. It's not, though. Yay, piano. I like this one quite a bit.

13. "Macho Man"-This is actually "Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl" by Broken Social Scene. I remember this track being on a couple other mixtapes, if I'm not mistaken. I really should listen to more Broken Social Scene. It's not that I don't at all, but I forget about this band sometimes.

14. "Electric Feel"-Thank God this isn't really MGMT. I probably would've been irritated. The only problem I had with this track is that it was so short. I wanted to hear more. This ambient track serves as a very nice interlude. I approve.

15. "Poker Face"-I smiled upon first hearing this track. This begins with solid bass drum and acoustic guitar. "Come away with me. We'll find our home. We'll find our peace." This reminds me of Bon Iver, but it's not him. Justin Vernon's voice is a bit softer than the one I got on this song. The female backing vocals compliment the male ones. "I, I am a fool now, I am a fool now for you." I like it.

16. "Orange Crush"-It opens with drums. WTF at these vocals. D: Knowing this is U2 didn't help me at all. I've only heard a couple of tracks by them, but I don't remember Bono ever sounding like that. I know a lot of people here who like U2 (Michael went to see them in Anaheim on Saturday), and I don't mean to offend anyone, but Bono's singing pretty much killed this song for me. Sorry.

17. "Für Elise"-While I was initially disappointed that this wasn't "Für Elise," I did realize that you had a lovely track as a replacement. This sounds '60s to me. That's not a bad thing, mind you. The song in itself is actually quite cute. I can't help but smile as I listen to this. You picked an excellent closer.

Here's my wrap-up. Chris, as usual, you have made an awesome tape. I strongly suggest that everyone else take a listen to it. I await the track listing now.

Yeah, I've never done a troll-track in the past, but the small gap between tapes made me less worried about making a 'perfect tape' to have some fun.

It's the opening track of a collab between Jon Hopkins and a scottish folk singer called King Creosote. I personally liked the almost religious nature of the chord sequence. Glad you liked it.

The Books do a lot of collage-like music using a ton of samples. I read that this narrator was taken from an old christian kids tape that predates the music genre. Anyway, thought it was interesting.

Sorry about the album art, though like you said, I figured you would catch on anyways. This ones called on Tenuousness (for those too impatient to scroll down).

5. "Barbie Girl"-This went back to electronic. I got kinda bored with this one, honestly, because it didn't really go much of anywhere. It layered a little bit, and it did change at one point (about halfway, I believe), but it went right back. It's not bad; it just didn't really appeal to me. Sorry.

Quite alright, I kinda feel like a conformist for jumping on the burial-four tet bandwagon, though I do like this track.

Nice.

Darn, I thought I was so clever with this one. I first heard it on the soundtrack of Sofis Coppola's latest film, and spent a week addicted to it.

7. "I'm My Own Grandpa"-This is a more ambient/experimental track. It reminds me of Eksi Ekso, actually, which is good because I've been rather into them lately. I can't help but feel this sounds familiar. I'm not really sure why. Anyway, I like it.

This one I recycled from the tape I received for mixtape 8, so thank Julia for this one. It's 'Restless' by Pill Wonder.

8. "Barbie Girl"-It has this ambiguous and ambient intro. Then, acoustic guitar comes in and removes all uncertainty. This is a very nice and very calm instrumental number. I like it.

'The Summer' by Balmorhea. A folky instrumental post-rock group. A safe bet, me thought to me self.

I told of this band by one of my brother in-law's friends who has impeccable taste in music. Really fantastic album and song. I'm excited that you like it as much as I do.

10. "Fuck the Pain Away"-This one reminded me of Thom's solo work. It's probably the beats; they sound like something he would use. The track somehow seems to work for me. I'm not sure why. When the vocals came in, I was reminded of Björk. Is this her, by chance? Just a guess.

I understand the Bjork vibe, it's an icelandic group called Múm, and her vocals on this track are kinda bjork-esque.

Another safe bet, it's actually a side-project of the Strokes drummer called "Little Joy". Good stuff...

Though you don't really hear him, it's an indie-folk songwriter named Aaron Roche who I randomly saw with a class last semester. He played with a bunch of local classical musicians, and thought it was cool enough to share. Glad you liked it.

Another one I expected you to recognise. I'm in a similar boat, I almost forgot about them until I watched them on you-tube at coachella, in any case I haven't put a BSS on a mixtape before so.....

14. "Electric Feel"-Thank God this isn't really MGMT. I probably would've been irritated. The only problem I had with this track is that it was so short. I wanted to hear more. This ambient track serves as a very nice interlude. I approve.

Haha, you're a great reviewer, often these tracks just get 'meh' responses. And though I put it in mainly to slow things down for the next track, I thnk I've given Matthew Cooper a plug in each of my last five tapes.

Here's a guy from North Carolina who my college friend (also from NC) introduced me to. He goes by Margolnick. I definitely see the Bon Iver vibe. I struggled wit this song because it's so melodramatic and potent, but figured it would make a nice climax for the tape.

Sorry.

Haha, no offense taken. I'm generally not crazy about Bono's voice either, though find this track interesting because it was a practice take where bono was testing out lyrics and melodies before the song was officially written that Eno convinced them to keep (hence the mumbling feel).

Like with the first track, I had some fun on this tape. This is The Velvet Underground basically making fun of mainstream pop songs. I love the lyrics. Glad you approve

Here's my wrap-up. Chris, as usual, you have made an awesome tape. I strongly suggest that everyone else take a listen to it. I await the track listing now.

Ahhh, I've been wondering whether I should listen to that King Creosote collab with Jon Hopkins. I suppose I should now. (BTW, I don't think I ever mentioned this, but I'd like to thank you for getting me into Jon Hopkins in the first place. I looked into him more after I reviewed your tape for MTE 5 (I wasn't the original recipient for that one, either), and I think he's great. :D)

Interesting. I haven't really taken a solid listen to múm, although I've heard of them and know of their existence. Perhaps I'll take a look into that.

Actually, I'll take a look into several of these things. Especially Wye Oak. Geez. :dead: Thank yooooou. :D

My review. Sorry it took so long.

1. Nice acoustic start. I don't like the weird breathing type thing in the chorus. But I really like the vocals. Not crazy about the breathy thing again. I think I'd appreciate other songs of this band. Gets better as it goes on. Second time around I like it more.

2. Sounds familiar. I think I've heard it before. Arcade Fire? I don't really listen to them but I think I've heard it before. Anyways. Really good tune, been meaning to get into them but large discographies scare me. I've listened to this track a bunch of times outside the mixtape and love it. Definitely gonna make me check them out more seriously.

3. Bon Iver right? It's okay. He's a bit slow/acoustic for my liking, but everyone else seems to love him. It's a pretty song but not something I'd listen to regularly. The more I listen to it though… the nicer it gets. So maybe I changed my mind. It would be nice for those lazy mellow days.

4. Alex Turner. Love this soundtrack. I love this song.

5. Starts off upbeat with goofy lyrics. It's a cute little song. I love the end bit where it picks up a bit. Haha, I like it. It's fun and cute.

6. Mellow song with a poppy chorus. I like it. It's got a bit of a summer feel to it and the chorus / high pitch singing is probably my favourite part of the track. Catchy tune where I find myself bobbing to the chorus on the first listen.

7. Fleet Foxes? Never liked them. Don't shoot me. A bit too acoustic, slow, and folky for my tastes. The weakest song on the tape for me so far. Just not enough going on for me.

8. Two Door Cinema Club. I don't listen to them too much but I know this song and like it quite a bit. Good upbeat tune.

9. Not really my thing. Too slow, not enough going on again. The second half is just boring for me.

10. When I heard the opening… I was like oh… not really a fan of the vocals and all that. But as the song picked up… It was totally different… I liked it a lot, definitely loving the upbeat style after the last slow song. It's really good once it picked up.

11. This is a really simple acoustic song. Simple lyrics and what not. Not one of my favourites at all. Just a bit boring.

12. Another acoustic song. This one is not bad though. Rooooosseeesss. I definitely like this one better than the other slower songs, but still a bit slow.

13. This song sounds familiar. Mumford and Sons? I tried listening to them. Couldn't do it. Again, don't shoot me. Just not my taste.

14. Foals. Spanish Sahara. I've listened to them a bit. This is the song of their's that stuck out to me the most. It's beautiful.

15. Saaad song to end the mixtape. It's another slow acoustic song. But I dig sad depressing songs. So I like it. Lol, as messed up as that is, it's true.

Overall. I enjoyed the mixtape and found some songs I'm gonna me listening to for a long time. I liked the upbeat tunes more than the acoustic, slow ones. My favourite new ones were probably 2, 5, 6, 10, and 15.

Thanks for the mixtape! Sorry I took so long to review it.

5. "Barbie Girl"-This went back to electronic. I got kinda bored with this one, honestly, because it didn't really go much of anywhere. It layered a little bit, and it did change at one point (about halfway, I believe), but it went right back. It's not bad; it just didn't really appeal to me. Sorry.

it's funny because this is the greatest song of all time :(

My review. Sorry it took so long.
