The 9th Mixtape Exchange

Featured Replies

So, Mike asked me to review a mixtape as well, which I hate to do cos it's stressing me and I don't really know how to write a proper review but ooooook, I'm trying.

Sorry your mixtape partner didn't work on this and sorry for taking so long to review it but like I've said, writing reviews stresses me too much, but thanks for waiting though!

Track number 1 : It's an instrumental :cheesy: Eh, it's a bit dark I guess, but I like it. Haha, tbf, it sounds a lot like some part of Silent Hill, like you're running through some street or creepy hallway.

Track number 2 : A rock song, his voice reminds me a bit of the dude from Smashing Pumpkins but I know it's not him, the style also reminds me of Jimmy Eat World (which I listened a lot when I was 14 yay), sounds upbeat. It's alright I guess. COMMON SENSE.

Track number 3: Ok, another rock-ish track, it's alright. Sorry for this comparison but this also reminds me a lot of JEW D: Not a big fan of the singer's voice but the song isn't bad to my ears.

Track number 4: Starts with some drums, then guitar kicks in, sounds errr.. folkish? And piano too. I don't like it x_x Sowwy D:

Track number 5: Tick tick tick, tick tick tick tick tick tick tick, drumzzzz, and some funny noise. Another rocky track, um, yeah I don't feel it sorry :(

Track number 6: This one I recognized immediately and thumbs up for this! Listening to Dexter is always great for me <3

Track number 7: Kids playing on the background then guitar, little bits of piano, I dunno but this song makes me feel funnay, it's nice.

Track number 8: This guy sounds a bit like the Snow Patrol dude at times, and this song reminds me a bit of some Arcade Fire song, dunno which one tbh, but I really like this song.

Track number 9: Electric guitar, I really liked this track as well, it's so simple, though I'm not really fond of the singer's voice x_x but this song really sounds like something The Kills would write haha.

Track number 10: Acoustic guitar, strings? Um, I'm not really into this track x_x

Track number 11: Eh, this track is nice, a bit relaxing, drumming stays the same but it's cool, and his voice is okay. I really dig the ending though, all instrumental with bits of piano, very relaxing.

Track number 12: Avril 14th <3 Enough said.

Track number 12 and a half: Hahahaha, basically it made me lol, I'd say it's the best track from the mixtape.

So it's a good mixtape, not really my thing but I enjoyed listening to it while exercising and being lazy here and there, I did listen a lot to this but I was too lazy to write a review and this stresses me so much so sorry for taking so long. Thanks a lot again. Yeah I also have to say I love you for the Yoda artwork <3

Thanks again!

And yeah. I think track 15 just struck a nerve cause I might have to move across the country from my boyfriend in a few months.

"Airports make me sad

I'm sure they shouldn't all be the same

But they're just landing pads

Boring tourist shopping chains

I remember times we had

Drinking while we wait for your plane

Feeling kinda bad

Wondering which one of us has changed

Cos we used to be slick

Subtle young hips, romantic young kissable lips

Unbearably sharp, unbreakable heart

With wide eyes and faith

That life could never pull apart if we were OK

But distance kills the best of intentions

And never intended it to be this way"

Basically made me cry... a lot.

THANKS FOR MAKING ME CRY JERK.

:(

But yeah. I enjoyed the tape. Thanks a lot.

I FUCKING KNOW HOW YOU FEEL IVET

WHO THE VAGINA COCKER MADE MY MIXTAPE

I know who did :smug:

did you like it or no?

Overall it was decent. I haven't listened to it since reviewing it. But I wanna know names/artists on at least a handful of the tracks

Yes, and I posted my contrasting opinion. Fin.

Sorry still haven't posted my review. I've been really busy lately, I apologize.

If someone who hasn't got a review yet wants me to review their mixtape, I'm open to do it tonight :nice:

So, Mike asked me to review a mixtape as well, which I hate to do cos it's stressing me and I don't really know how to write a proper review but ooooook, I'm trying.

Hey, thanks for reviewing the tape :nice: I admit it wasn't my best one; Looking back, there wasn't enough variety on there. But what hey, glad you enjoyed it overall!

This is Intro by Doves, a super underrated group from Manchester. They started off as a dance-music group then switched to rock when they're studio burnt down

This is by a band called Built to Spill. I don't listen to this sort of stuff much but I like these guys, mostly cos they've got good lyrics and rock out well.

Track number 3: Ok, another rock-ish track, it's alright. Sorry for this comparison but this also reminds me a lot of JEW D: Not a big fan of the singer's voice but the song isn't bad to my ears.

I never listened to Jimmy Eat World so I can't say but I really enjoyed this track from The Pains of Being Pure at Heart. Fun, shoegazy fuzziness.

Track number 4: Starts with some drums, then guitar kicks in, sounds errr.. folkish? And piano too. I don't like it x_x Sowwy D:

Aww, I'm sorry you didn't like it :( The sadly departed Elliott Smith was a top songwriter.

Track number 5: Tick tick tick, tick tick tick tick tick tick tick, drumzzzz, and some funny noise. Another rocky track, um, yeah I don't feel it sorry :(

I really like this track, not sure why cos, like track 2, I rarely listen to stuff like this. The Wrens are quite underrated, probably cos it takes them forever to release anything.

Track number 6: This one I recognized immediately and thumbs up for this! Listening to Dexter is always great for me <3

Dexter :awesome:

Track number 7: Kids playing on the background then guitar, little bits of piano, I dunno but this song makes me feel funnay, it's nice.

Yeah, that's usually the case with Belle & Sebastian; fun, little indie pop.

Track number 8: This guy sounds a bit like the Snow Patrol dude at times, and this song reminds me a bit of some Arcade Fire song, dunno which one tbh, but I really like this song.

Glad you liked it! Track from Echo and the Bunnymen, a seminal post-punk group of the late 70s and early 80s.

Track number 9: Electric guitar, I really liked this track as well, it's so simple, though I'm not really fond of the singer's voice x_x but this song really sounds like something The Kills would write haha.

Heh, it's punk, vocals are usually dodgy  Glad you liked it, though, Wire are awesome and this album is a true punk classic. Later covered by R.E.M.

Track number 10: Acoustic guitar, strings? Um, I'm not really into this track x_x

Aww, shame you didn't like! The Flaming Lips are cool!

Track number 11: Eh, this track is nice, a bit relaxing, drumming stays the same but it's cool, and his voice is okay. I really dig the ending though, all instrumental with bits of piano, very relaxing.

Spoon. They make consistently good, minimalist pop/rock since the late 90s or so. Glad you enjoyed.

Track number 12: Avril 14th <3 Enough said.

Absolutely.

Track number 12 and a half: Hahahaha, basically it made me lol, I'd say it's the best track from the mixtape.

Haha, I threw this is in as a joke. The Happy Happy Joy Joy Song from the legendary Ren and Stimpy Show

Yeah, and thanks for the tracklist, I'll be definitely checking out the songs I liked and the respective bands <3

here's a review

Track 1: The song opens with talking and background music begins to come in. The build up works well with the talking. The song then breaks into a sort of punkish kind of sound with very raw vocals. It definitely seems like a good opening song for a mix so far. The song sounds pretty intense overall. I do feel the song though is kind of long.

Track 2: Song starts with some muted guitar and drums. The song then breaks into a full sound. The vocals sound a little familular. So far I'm not sure if I fully like it so far, because it sort of reminds me a lot of rock music that I often hear on the radio.

Track 3: The song starts with a swing kind of drum beat as well as a delayed sounding guitar. Then comes in a few vocals on the side of some kids singing. The song itself is not to bad. And so far I like this the most.

Track 4: The vocals sounds really familular with this song. Not sure if I'm a huge fan of the song to be honest. I think the musicians are talented, but in terms of the songs I don't know if it's the kind of song I like. I do really like the song a lot when it gets very quiet. The arrangement is great.

Track 5: The song starts off kind of minimalistic w/ vocals and just a single instrument. The vocals remind me a little bit of Death Cab for Cutie. The song gets good for me I guess during the bridge when the cello comes in. But overall not a huge fan.

Track 6: This is the Interlude #1 of the mix. To be honest I really like this a lot. the sounds are really good and the classical guitar works really well too. This might be my favorite track so far. I really like it a lot

Track 7: Starts with an acoustic guitar. The song itself is very folky which I really like. Vocally I'm not too sure about, but it still works well. Very nice song. The overall arrangement and feel of the song is really good. I really like this song a lot

Track 8: This song starts with drums and a guitar. The vocals are very country and folky. The the singer keeps singing America over and over. I sort of imagine a guy with a cowboy hat and a flag shirt. I'm not a huge fan of this to be honest. I just in general find songs that talk about countries like this one to be annoying. However I do like the bit when the distorted guitar comes in the best. I really like the rhythm of the song, though the vocals do annoy me

Track 9: The song starts off and reminds me of Sigur Ros with the organ. The song then comes in with some acoustic guitar. The song is very delicate and vocals come in. Honestly just from this bit so far initially I really love the song a lot so far. The later some drums come in and the make the song sound a bit more full with some electric guitars coming in putting in a few fills as well as some background vocals. This song really sounds great overall. It may be my favorite off the mix. It seems like a pretty emotional song, not only with the arrangement but the vocals and lyrics.

Track 10: The song has a very country feel to it with the vocals and use of banjo. I picture an old man sitting on his porch singing this song. To me this seems like a good sounding song to end a mix with. I'm normally not much of a fan of country music, but I actually enjoy this song in it's simplicity.

Track 11: The track opens with an acoustic guitar picking. The vocals come in and remind me of a combination of Jeff Buckley and the lead singer of Timber Timbre. The vocals are really impressive and I like the overall mix of it. I really like this song a lot as it progresses. There comes in some synth strings and the song gets to sound pretty emotional. The strings work really well and are quite moving even though they have a synth sound to it. This is another song off the mix that is one of my favorites.

Track 12: This is the 2nd and last Interlude of the mix. The song starts off really great. I love the overall mix of the guitars, piano, drums and bass. It just sounds so full and has a spacey sound. To me I picture this song sort of being recorded in the 60's, though it sort of has a modern vintage feel to it. I really love this song a lot. It might be one of, if not my favorite song off the mix thus far.

Track 13: The mix starts with electronic drums. I really like the overall mix, and the sound of this song. The vocals work extremely well in the mix. This is a really great song, honestly another song that I would add to my favorites on the mix. Is this also Bon Iver that makes a vocal appearance? This song honestly is really great overall. Can't wait to see who this is by.

Track 14: The song opens with some drums that sound distant. Then the song really opens up and sounds very full with vocals that sound a little familuar but I can't put my finger on it. I do really like the overall feel of the song though. It's really great.

Track 15: This song is heavy on drums which sound good. But from the vocals and overall feel of the song I'm not much a fan of it.

Track 16: The song opens with some shakers and electronic piano. Then come in some female vocals that sound very distant and spacey. The vocals are pretty impressive. Then comes in some more electronic sounds, and synths that make the song more full. I really like this one.

Track 17: After a long journey we've finally made it to the last song. The song opens sort of how the mix ended with there being talking. The song has a bit of piano and synths with a female vocalist. There's also background vocals that come in. Personally I'm not a huge fan of the song, but the ending vocals are good.

Overall I enjoyed the mix. It gave me mixed feelings however. Some songs I really liked a lot, while other songs not too much. I did like how there was a change in genres throughout the mix. But to be honest certain bits (especially the first Part I wasn't a huge fan of since it was more country/folky. Also in terms of length I felt that it went on a bit too long. I do though really appreciate all the time you put into the mix because it looks like it took a long time. Also I really thought it was creative how the mix was split into 3 parts w/ 2 interludes. Nicely done! :D

4-Elliott Smith- Waltz #2 (XO) (XO, 1998)

7- Belle & Sebastian- If You're Feeling Sinister (If You're Feeling Sinister, 1996)

woohoo!

Oh god. I missed whoever put in the Elliot Smith song, or I would have quoted it and gone OMG OMG OMG. That's so good omg.

I can't listen to it anymore though cuz it was like my depressed-nobody-loves-me song for like several months and now I HAVE A BOYFRIEND so I listen to it and just go "ugh god derp"

so i feel like this has officially died.

That's probably because it has.

BTW, I've been meaning to tell you this. I approve of your new avi.

Salut Deirdre!! Ok, we're both french but we'll do this in english...xD

My guess was right: my mixtape maker is French!

It's Kings of Leon with Crawl ;) I thought it would made a good opener (and this track actually open OBTN).

Indeed, it’s a good opener!

It's Peter Bjorn and John. I only know this song from them. I listen a lot to OUI FM and they're playing a lot right now. I liked this song so I put it!

I opened all my tracks with windows media player and I delete everything..*bizarre* And yeah it's Blondie with 'Atomic'. This track is actually from Khaplay (who couldn't play for this mix so I let her choose a track that I would put in mine :p )

How weird is that? My WMP must be a bit fucked up :laugh3:

That is kind of you to let her put a bit of her touch in your mixtape :nice: She did a mixtape for me the last mixtape exchange I participed, if I remember correctly! And I still enjoy listening to it!

Yep, Brigitte indeed! I discovered her thx to Emilie Mazoyer chronicle on Le Mouv and I bought their album, it's great!

It's Holocene, a song from bon Iver's new album. I like this guy and this song.

I listened to some of his songs before but I didn’t really get into it!

10/10 :) Love her voice too!

Thanks teacher :D

My dear Flo of course! It's a b-side called 'hardest of hearts'.

The band is The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. I only know this song from them (again, it's playing a lot on OUI FM, the 'indé playlist')

The band is Fitz and the Tantrums. I (again) only know this song, I heard it on a video where the Kings of Leon were fooling around on this song XD and I liked it.

It is Arcade fire with 'city with no children'. I'm not a 'fan' of them but I like this one a lot.

British band indeed called Chapel Club. Remind me of mix of White Lies and Joy Division. Their album is really good.

It's the Wombats!! With 'jump into the fog'. I wanted to end the mixtape with a 'joyfull' track and I thought this one would fit!

Challenge achieved!

So here the full tracklisting:

1- Crawl - Kings of Leon

2- Second chance - Peter Bjorn and John

3- Atomic - Blondie

4- Battez-vous - Brigitte

5- Holocene - Bon Iver

6- Isabella - Moriarty

7- Hardest of hearts - Florence+The Machine

8- Belong - The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart

It’s a mixtape I will keep in my folder and continue listening to! And I will check other songs from the artists I like! And I should re-check these radios you're talking about (I listened to them, what seems to me, a long time ago!).

That was to confuse you XD

Really well done :D I should definitely do this in the next mixtape I will make!

TO MY MIXTAPER: I saw the tracklisting you've posted but I hadn't had the time to answer you! THANK YOU A LOT! Will definitevly check some of the artists in my mix!!
