Famous role: Peter Falk as the tenacious detective Columbo. His family announced that the star dies at his LA home

Veteran actor Peter Falk has died at the age of 83.

The veteran actor, most famous for his role as the tenacious detective Columbo, died at his home in Beverly Hills.

He had been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, according to his daughter, Catherine Falk.

In 2009, a judge established a conservatorship for the ailing actor after a court battle between Catherine and his wife of more than 30 years, Shera Falk.

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in Columbo, and he was also nominated for two Academy Awards for his countless film roles.

Falk's last feature film was American Cowslip in 2009.

His Columbo character was famous for his Mac-style raincoat, the ever-present cigar, his slouch and unkempt appearance - and the false exit, followed by his catchphrase: 'One more thing.'

Falk is survived by his wife Shera and daughters Catherine and Jackie, from a previous marriage.

I read about this earlier this afternoon. I liked "Columbo" a lot back when I watched it some time ago. This makes me sad.

Rest in peace, Columbo. v_v

I used to watch re-runs with my family every Sunday :(
