censorship

Featured Replies

What is your opinion on the lame thing of censoring music? Do you think censoring actual albums instead of having both or even just having both is going too far? What things are censored that you think if something is censored shouldn't be, or should be if they're not? (Haha, I think it's silly when the radio just bleeps out "god" in "goddamn"), Should an artist leave a label if they try to censor them? etc. etc. etc.

I DUNNO JUST DISCUSS. :|

But yeah, I started this because I'm listening to The Light Of Things Hoped For by Brave Saint Saturn and freaking Tooth & Nail has put scratchy sounds over words for things like "when you hear this song I hope it hurts like hell" and then there's this song:

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4tpdLM5dGOo]YouTube - ‪Brave Saint Saturn - Heart Still Beats‬‏[/ame]

They freaking censored out "he always looks pissed off" and "when he says 'go to hell'". Yet they left in "she's too far gone for whoring" haha.

edit: what an awful first bs2 songs for someone to hear, with dennis singing instead of reese and stuff haha

I've never understood some censorings. The most ridiculous censor I've seen was watching The Matrix and Neo originally is supposed to say "how about I give you the finger and you let me go", but instead they replaced the word finger with "flipper" ...

but in terms of censorship I don't think you should censor words. The reason being that the songs are the musicians artwork and I'd be like censoring paintings for some things they show. No one should tell musicians how to limit what they show in music or whatever, it's up to them ultimately.

I mean of course the topic will come up for children and how all of those words or risky lyrics or whatever will be bad for children. Well to be honest it's not the lyrics that are the issues. It's the parents. If you are a good enough parent then you should teach them right from wrong, and also not keep them so ignorant when it comes to the topics of lyrics (especially if they're talking about something like sex)

This reminded me of some comments that I read on YouTube as I was waiting for "Moving to Mars" to load on my computer yesterday. This mother was pleading with people to not use swear words because her 14-year-old son is being exposed to them. I was like, "Well, if you really don't want your son to see these things, maybe you should put some parental controls on your computer or something. :|"

But yeah, Mike's right. It's a person's duty as a parent to determine what's approriate and not appropriate for their children. This isn't about just music, either. This goes for pretty much everything in life.

Tammi you know better time to censorship song and clip mica even with a man bittersweet

Whoa I made a thread that got multiple sentence responses from people. :surprised:

HAHA flipper

yeah, but then there's parents that screw up their childrens' ability to tell what is okay and what isn't on their own by making all the decisions for them and not letting them listen to things for stupid reasons and then the children grow up feeling guilty and afraid when they listen to things even when they're perfectly fine and they live in a state of confusion about everything and how to tell the difference between what they've just been raised to think they shouldn't listen to and what they actually shouldn't and such. :| :| :|

There aren't too many parents like that, though, and for the most part, even with normal parents, children all have that point when they rebel against their parents, so they're bound to pick up stuff from outside forces eventually, right?

I don't get the point of censoring music either... i thought music is all about the artist's self expression.

I thin censorship is extremely stupid. And when parents try to keep their kids from seeing/hearing certain things I find it funny. They're trying to keep their children away from what they will inevitably end up knowing.

And censoring a song can really take away some of its meaning. I suppose warning labels on albums are okay, but I don't think songs on the radio should be censored. The words exists no use pretending otherwise. And you can always change the station.

My parents were really bad about keeping me from listening to stuff for the longest time. I wasn't allowed to listen to modern music at all. I remember how my mom refused to buy me Muse's "Absolution Tour" DVD because she took offense to the word "atheist." She wouldn't even listen to my explanation that the song in question is about the exact opposite of what she was thinking. :|

Anyway, I ended up finding what I wanted on my own eventually, and I turned out just fine, so there ya go.

Does this mean there's hope for me to undo the damage that's been done?

Heck, I remember getting a Coldplay album and hiding it for two weeks or so because I was afraid to ask to put it on the computer as someone might find something wrong in the lyrics when they went though them and I wouldn't be able to have it. :|

I think no matter what I'll never be able to escape the irrational guilt and fear associated with music for me though. :l

Right now everything I get isn't being inspected, but one small thing and it could end up being so therefore leading to me having to get rid of half of my music library I already have and constant inspection and fdlksjglkdaga.

Now that I think of it that's probably one of the reasons having my music being listened to by someone else is so distressing for me.

edit: crap i accidentally posted this instead of pasting it into the last post derp

I think I just hijacked my own thread.

I also think I just broke down all over this thread.

There's always hope to change damage that's been done. I remember how in my freshman year of high school, I would sneak albums by giving money to a friend of mine, who would then go buy what I wanted, then give it to me before school. I was a sneaky kid.

D: I didn't mean for my post to lead you to a mental breakdown. Wow, I feel bad. :disappointed:

I think when my parents saw I didn't start burning things and swearing then they knew I could handle non-Christian music :P

^ That's all my brother listens to now. :|

Dang Violet, you rebel. :cool3:

Haha, it's okay, it's not your fault and I'm okay now. :P

Reading back on that post it looks like I'm gonna need therapy or something for that one of these days. xD

omg do we listen to anything in common? :surprised:

or is he one of those who just listens to the k-lovey stuff and ccm fluff oh man i can't stand that stuff :|

like, as Mr. Reese Roper said about Christian music "It's one thing to say that Jesus changes you and makes you a better person, but completely another thing to say that because of that, you are sorry for being homophobic, or ignorant to the plight of Native Americans, or that blind nationalism is wrong -- things that are offensive to much of the Church but need to be said." five iron for life baby~

Haha, yeah, I was. I still am in a lot of ways. :charming:

OK, good. I'm glad you're OK.

I'm not sure. All I can recall is him telling me that Red was his favorite.

Half the time kids will download originally safe pop songs which have been covered by some randomer who's added loads of swear words and the kids just play them because they find them funny.

I don't think they should censor music at all, except on the radio. I understand having a censored version on the radio, as anyone (including very young children) could be flipping through the channels and hear words they really shouldn't be exposed to.

However, I don't think that there's any need to censor the music you buy. . . but I do think that they should mark it better when there are words that aren't appropriate for some audiences (:P). Because as much as I agree with people that say that it's the parents' responsibility, many parents just aren't responsible enough to monitor what their children are listening to, doing on the computer, etc. So I think it would be fair to have some sort of rating on the music, so that parents could glance at the album, see a green flag for example, and know that it's ok for their children to listen to.

That would be pretty cool actually.

It would need a pretty complex system though.

i have all of their albums lol

Ratings won't do any good. There are parents out there who buy their 10-year-old boys M-rated video games all the time. Similar situations happen with movies. What makes you think music would be any different?
