Depends, if you used the riff, it is copying. If you used only the chord progression, then it isn't. There are hundreds of other songs with the same progression, so it's not considered copying. Can you explain a little bit better?

Nope, chord progression is the pattern of chords played in the song. But you're right, riff is the notes.
