First off, let me start off my post with the obligatory "music is subjective" spiel. Now that's out of the way, of the listed albums above, the only ones I still listen to on a regular basis are Animal Collective's Feels and Grizzly Bear's Yellow House. The large majority of the listed albums are mediocre at best. For example, the two Boards of Canada albums you listed are widely considered to be their worst output - certainly can't compare to Music Has the Right to Children or Geogaddi. And even though I'm a huge Beck fan, I'm certainly not going to pretend Guero or The Information are good albums.

Seriously, look at all the albums released in these two years and it's almost laughable how they pale in comparison to other years in the decade:

2005 had Feels, I am a Bird Now, Illinois and Late Registration.

2006 had The Drift, Return to Cookie Mountain, Silent Shout, Yellow House and Ys.

In two years, that's a total of 9 albums that have any lasting power and/or influence. Just to put things in perspective, let's take a look at 2007's output.

2007: The National's Boxer, Bon Iver's For Emma, Forever Ago, The Field's From Here We Go Sublime, Radiohead's In Rainbows, Arcade Fire's Neon Bible, Panda Bear's Person Pitch, Feist's The Reminder, LCD Soundsystem's Sound of Silver, Animal Collective's Strawberry Jam, and Burial's Untrue. That's a total of 10 really good albums in a single year.

I enjoyed the music is subjective beginning and the objective views on music ending :p

^that's quite interesting, Greg :surprised:

:p

In case it wasn't clear though, I was prefacing all my opinion with the whole "music is subjective" line. For all I know, someone might think 2005 + 2006 were the pinnacle years for music. My post certainly isn't meant to present an "objective" view of music nor a critique of your music tastes.

I, however, maintain my stance that 2005/2006 were weak years, especially in comparison with the rest of the decade. I just never seem to be in the mood to revisit the albums from these years (with some exceptions of course).

Well yes, they're mostly popular bands, but there popular becuase alot of people think they are good. Theres nothing wrong with me liking popular artists, there popular for a reason. I've listened to other stuff this year, those just happen to be the best. Alot of peoples these days think poular = bad, and I'm not saying you think that, but you've heard of these bands because alot of people talk about them because alot of people think they are good. I'm ending this here, these are my views, sure there are indie bands I listen to, but they just didn't make my list, as some of my all time favorite artists made albums this year. Lay off me man, it's my opinion.

OK. Lemme get this straight. You claim to listen to bands no one has heard of before, yet after I post your list full of bands that are actually quite popular, you say, "Yeah, that was my point?" Wow, way to completely contradict yourself. Again, I'm not sitting here trying to "attack" you. I merely pointed out a discrepancy between things you said here and things you said elsewhere, which you still haven't really explained. I have no problem with you stating an opinion. It's really funny how you have a problem with mine. You can either have a discussion with me like a mature human being, don't read my posts, or (if you're really that offended at stuff I'm telling you, which I honestly don't know why you would be) put me on your ignore list. It's not that difficult. I wouldn't think it is, anyway.

To be fair, I think Cheese Nip 2 is saying that he also listened to some "obscure" bands but their material wasn't good enough (in comparison with the more "popular" bands) to place on his Top 10 list.

lmao

Sufjan Stevens ILLINOIS

2nd.

Actually, I 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, ... , 1,000,000,000,000,000,000th this.

Illinois definitely deserves all its praise (I even listed it in my own post) but does one good album make for a good music year?

Again, feel free to disagree but I just looked back at all my records from 2005 and there's just a handful I even listen to anymore. In fact, I could probably count all of them on one hand.

When it's Sufjan? Yes. It can even make for a decade, a century, etc etc.

I think he was trying to say that as well, but the way he said it is a bit confusing because he seemed to defend why he liked popular artists while violetsparks only pointed out the list to show that at least that list didn’t really show that he’s listening to a lot indie stuff. She never said in her post that he does not listen to Indie stuff or that him liking popular music is bad. But yeah, I think his original intent was to say that he does listen to a lot of Indie stuff but that just didn’t make his list.

2005/2006 were great years imo :D

My most listened album is from 2005 :wacky: and the glass handed kites

Going back to Adele...I cannot deny that 21 has some killer singles. Someone Like You is probably one of my favorite songs of the year, and Rolling in the Deep and Set Fire to the Rain are brilliant as well.

That said...the rest of the album is incredibly boring. And three great songs do little, if anything, to redeem an album so full of filler.

Definitely doesn't make my list.

Wasn't Rolling In The Deep about a buffet?

She just keeps moaning she could have had it all or something.

yes, that's exactly what i meant! i meant no offense to anyone, I'm fine with all their points of view. On the internet though, i find peoples motives can often be interpreted wrong. i meant no offense, i was just stating my personal opinion, if you took as offensive, I didn't mean it to sound like that. Hope we can put this whole thing behind us.

Just out of curiosity, what are some of these "obscure" bands and/or albums you listened to?

2005 + 2006 were pretty bad.

I disagree. Sufjan, The National, Kanye, and Metric all released albums in 2005. Plus Plus Bloc Party released Silent Alarm, their only truly great album in my opinion, and Four tet and BSS released albums too! (that's all I remember offhand)

Arctic Monkeys made their debut in 2006. Plus, just to name a couple, Burial, Vetiver, and Hot Chip all released albums that year. There's also The Eraser, and Back to Black by Amy Winehouse.

Those are all I can come up with at the moment, but honestly if there are at least five great albums released in the year, I count it as a good year. Maybe not as good as some other years, but certainly not bad.

Well then, he should've said that. It would've made a lot more sense.

Actually, if I hear "Rolling in the Deep" one more blasted time, I will punch someone in the face. That song has been played to the point of no return. :bigcry:

ETA: My Internet is stupid slow. I hate this. :shifty:

DUDE.ALLIGATOR. YEAH.

Just out of curiosity, what are some of these "obscure" bands and/or albums you listened to?

Well, I guess "obsure" kind of depends on the person, but I'll say what I've been listening to latley that you all may not know.

As you can see on my list, I've been listening to The Black Box Revelation alot lately. They're a pretty new band so there still pretty obscure. I recentally have also been listening to a band called Sloan. They seem to have quite a large cult following online, but I don't know anyone who listens to them, so I guess they're obscure. I highly reccomend both bands to anyone who hasn't heard of them. Sloan is a canadian, really brit-pop sounding band, while BBR is kind of like a mix of The Rolling Stones and The Black Keys.

Also, while I have the chance I would like to advertise for The Brian Jonestown Massacre. They're not really obscure but they are so underrated! I recommend "Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request".

Also, if any of you are interested in "historic" indie bands, I'd recommend you check some psycdelic bands from the mid sixies (if your into that kind of stuff, which I obviously am). There were alot of good bands during that era that were kind of pioneers of independed music and underground scenes. Some of it's really hard to find but if you do enough digging you can find some gems! Just something to check out.:)

ALLIGATOR!!!!

3 Canadian albums in the top 10!

Was very surprised to see Destroyer in the #2 spot. Much deserved though, it's a great album.

My only gripe is I know the only reason that he finished so high is because he is on Merge. It annoys the hell out of me that the only Canadian albums that get reviewed are ones on labels like Merge or Arts & Crafts.
