PITCHFORK ALBUMS OF THE YEAR

Featured Replies

Adele is overrated. She is the epitome of boring. Not just her songs, but her performances as well. She doesnt have some spectacular range and her voice isnt particularly powerful. Im at a lost at her popularity. Shes a good singer though. Just good. 21 doesnt fair well in comparison to 19 to me.

Beyonce album have somewhat quality R&B songs on it, although she likes to scream like she is running from an ax murder at times. Her album was blah though. That "Girls" single was just dreadful. I really only liked 3 songs [4 including deluxe version] depending on how Im feeling.

Both can be boring, but R&B and Soul genres arent supposed to be "exciting'' though. I like R&B and Soul music, but they both are way too overrated and shouldn't be on these lists.

I feel like both market off their image. Beyonce sells sex and a questionable pregnancy and Adele sells her "ordinariness" if that makes sense. Her normalness and ordinary image appeals to people. Its quite ironic. I do commend her for it.

Part of Adele's schtick is her body as well. She's an idol for the fatties.

She deserves to be on the list though. Wrote some very good songs, just nothing I have any interest in.

LOL @ Braddock. I was trying to tip toe around the harsh truth of that.

I think it's been great. Just gotta look in the right places. Good jazz year, for instance.

^^yes and no?

Anyone else think this was a terrible year for music overall? :/

amazing year for electronic music (both underground and mainstream. dubstep!!!)

Not many great electronic albums, that's why it doesn't really show on list.

Anyone else think this was a terrible year for music overall? :/

In my opinion, 2011 has been an incredible year for music, one of the best in recent memory. When quality albums like EMA's Past Life Martyred Saints and Lykke Li's Wounded Rhymes can't even break my Top 50, you know there's been some really great stuff.

Also, 2011 was an interesting year for music: unlike 2010, a relatively weak year with a definitive AOTY (My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy), 2011 had an abnormal number of quality albums but no clear-cut AOTY. That being said, Let England Shake or Bon Iver, Bon Iver will probably populate the #1 spot on most critics' Top Albums lists.

What about Room(s), Severant or Glass Swords?

I enjoyed them, but it was only a few tracks that stood out. for example Ultra Thizz was one of my favourite songs of the year, but the album wasn't...

I thought the Alarma single was a lot better than Rooms.

Burst Apart by The Antlers was given a 8.2 (deserved a 9.2), but it didn't make the list :(

But at least Pitchfork knows a best album of the year when they hear one

^ I actually really didn't like there's either, but I thought the order of the albums they did have was pretty good, and I was glad to see the inclusion of Slave Ambiant. Still, none of these lists get even close to doing it for me.:\

Didn't you say you hadn't even heard of most of them? How are you even commenting on them if you haven't listened to the majority of them?

I don't think there's any such thing.

Well, I'm saying I'm dissapointed that my favorites aren't on the list. The ones on there may be very good, I won't doubt that until I hear them, but the reason I don't like the list is becuase I don't know them, if that makes sense. I haven't heard them, so personally they wouldn't be in my top albums of the year.

Here's my tip to you: listen to more music, then we'll talk

I don't have the time or money to listen to all of that stuff. I listen to alot of stuff but my music circles don't cross with these particular critics. Plus, there are some genres of music that I just don't like, so I'm not going to look into those particular genres.

But yeah, I listen to alot of music that alot of people probally haven't heard of. Theres so much out there it's impossable to hear it all.:dizzy:

I totally agree that Youth Lagoon should be higher. I think it's in my top ten.

Glad you pointed this out! This album is good shit indeed! Im finding it hard to continuously listen to the whole album, because every time I get to #2 Recent Bedroom, I drift off and then hit replay

WHOA HIPSTER OVER HERE

My thoughts exactly. At any rate, while there were some disappointments, I'm happy with what this year has produced. :D

That's when you go out and explore a bit. You mentioned that you don't have the time or money. With music, you kinda just have to make time. As far as money goes, there's always YouTube. Also, some artists put free streaming links of their albums over the Internet. (That's how I first listened to Feist's new album, for example.) Just give some stuff a try; it can't hurt.

I asked you in the SPIN thread what your top albums would be. Here's what you told me:

Well, here's the peoples votes for anyone who hasn't seen them

http://www.coldplaying.com/forum/showthread.php?t=89000

Here's mine

1st Mylo Xyloto - Coldplay

2nd Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

3rd Suck It And See - The Arctic Monkeys

4th Wasting Light - Foo Fighters

5th Different Gear, Still Speeding - Beady Eye

6th Helplessness Blues - Fleet Foxes

7th Torches - Foster The People

8th Shiver of Joy EP - Black Box Revelation (EPs count right? Even though it's only an Ep, it's fantastic! I can't wait for there full U.S LP!)

9th The King of Limbs - Radiohead

10th I'm With You - The Red Hot Chili Peppers

The only band I've never even heard of on this list is Black Box Revelation, and that's probably because they're new (given your wording in your post). If I'm to judge the accuracy of that comment based on this post, I'd say that it's not very accurate at all.

Well yes, they're mostly popular bands, but there popular becuase alot of people think they are good. Theres nothing wrong with me liking popular artists, there popular for a reason. I've listened to other stuff this year, those just happen to be the best. Alot of peoples these days think poular = bad, and I'm not saying you think that, but you've heard of these bands because alot of people talk about them because alot of people think they are good. I'm ending this here, these are my views, sure there are indie bands I listen to, but they just didn't make my list, as some of my all time favorite artists made albums this year. Lay off me man, it's my opinion.

2005 + 2006 were pretty bad.

Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

Beck - Guero

Beck - The Information

Beirut - Gulag Orkestar

Boards Of Canada - The Campfire Headphase

Boards Of Canada - Trans Canada Highway

CocoRosie - Noah's Ark

Devendra Banhart - Cripple Crow

That's from a quick look on my iPod. Plenty will be missed as the majority of my songs aren't dated. Looks like a decent couple of years to me.

lmao

and

Sufjan Stevens ILLINOIS

(2005)

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I listened to shitty local pop music for the whole 2005 & 2006. :|

I was all Hannah Montana :(

I don´t think theres ever a bad year of music, you just need to look for it.

You just don't find it all as it's happening. But then there's like 50 years prior that you can submerge yourself in whilst you try to find the new stuff.

I was into Eminem. I was straight dope back then. Hip-Hop spoke to me~
