The Coldplay gigs that are impossible to forget (for all the wrong reasons...)

Fans claim glowing wristbands given out at concerts are keeping them awake at night

The coloured wristbands that turn stadiums into a spectacle of flashing lights are the real stars of Coldplay's shows, according to some.

But fans have been spooked after the glow-in-the-dark devices suddenly began flashing of their own accord, days after the event. Producers of Xylobands, given free to two million gig-goers on Coldplay's tour, have moved to assure fans, who took wristbands home, that they have no sinister powers.

The Xylobands use ultra-low-power microcontrollers to receive and process wireless signals that trigger the wristband's LEDs to light up in sync with the music and stage lights show. They cannot be reactivated outside of the show – in theory. But a concert-goer named Denise wrote on the band's web forum:"My xyloband woke me up in the middle of the night and it's still glowing."

Another wrote: "Really weird, my dad's white xyloband just started flashing again." A Belgian fan added: "Mine is alive! It started flickering about an hour ago." A respondent said that the only way to stop the glowing was by jamming a pencil clip into the unit.

The band has invested in RB Concepts, the Devon firm which developed the devices. Although Martin said the cost of producing two million bands for the tour was excessive, the company has received hundreds of requests to use them, from weddings to US sports franchises. Clive Banks, who is the co-founder of RB Concepts, said that the "afterglow" is no cause for concern. "There's no mind control or tracking, they are just for fun," he said.

The devices may be activated by their proximity to a Coldplay concert. "Our record transmission is 2km," Mr Banks said. "It depends on buildings but they have quite a range in a straight line. There might be some faulty units going off."

Fans speculated that the bands had become activated after locking into a particular radio frequency. "They operate on different frequencies in different jurisdictions so we have to get permission to transmit," Mr Banks said. "We have to meet the health and safety requirements. We don't want to interfere with any emergency services."

The Xylobands were designed by Jason Regler of RB Concepts, who approached the band after seeing them play at Glastonbury. There is some hope for fans disturbed by their glowing bands. "They have a battery and a finite life span," Mr Banks said.

Lurkers! :laugh3:

LOL! Mind control!! LOL

As (some of you) know, we have a 'number' of bands... and Oli (my son) has had quite a few start re-flashing over the last couple of days.. Last night I woke up and my son's bedroom was illuminated by a blue band.. So bright I thought someone had left a light on in the house somewhere! :o :laugh3:

I have a feeling that if there is any mind control going on, they're going to have a hard job with my teenage son! LOL! maybe they could mind control him to tidy his room? I'd be quite happy with that! LOL!

Woke up at 5.00 a.m. this morning to find my Xyloband from the Emirates Stadium gig on 1st June (which was sitting on my bedside table) was suddenly "glowing in the dark". Three hours later it's still glowing. Really cheered me up on such a wet and bleak Monday morning. xxx

wtf that's my post, but I never mentioned the fact it was a problem or that I was annoyed by it

stupid independent journalist, read this as well

Coldplay can see into your house through the bands!:laugh3:

Wtf I think they quoted me on "my dad's white" (which might have started to glow again because we had poked it with a paper clip a few days before, but I'm not sure, could be that I heard about that trick later). I don't really like the negative tone of the first bit of the article. I mean I thought it was fun when it started to glow again. Plus you can put them in a drawer or something and they won't keep you up at night.

Here's mine in the morning a few days ago. FYI, I'm French and went to Nice gig on May 22nd.

I think it's definitely a question of radio frequency.

I was given some bands just after Christmas by someone who went to the arena tour and the Charlie Brown shoot and they glowed at 3am one morning but I quickly realised it's because my phone's battery was "dying" . They stopped after about 5 minutes. In the morning when I plugged my phone in they did it again!

They've never done it since though and the bands I got last weekend have behaved so far. I think it's brilliant haha mind control :)

That's a secret plan, Coldplay wants to take control of all of us... And scion of George Orwell writes a book "2012". :sneaky:

By the way, if xylobands disturb them, they can send me. :wink3:

it would be nice if they all worked during the concert, mine didn't flash once on saturday

Why does the journalist act like people dislike having the bands come on again? If they read any more than the 3 posts mentioned, they would realise people are overjoyed to have their band start flashing again, it reminds them of the awesome time they had at the concert. Some people even found a way to turn the band on manually, hardly behaviour of miffed fans

and again my post is mentioned :|

this is really pissing me off big time

Don't they have better things to write about? As I heard it, It's not a really a problem that they're glowing..

My yellow and blue one is in my closet with the confetti. So i never see it go off...if it even goes off

it would be nice if they all worked during the concert, mine didn't flash once on saturday

Oh no, poor Ian, mine didn't flash for ages (a yellow one) then decided to work about 30 seconds into every song instead of instantly.

BTW my friend that went with me on Friday to Emirates just sent me a text to say her's started flashing last night and is still glowing this morning!

This is stupid...

If I were one of those people whose Xyloband start Glowing In The Dark after the concerts I would feel really happy :D! (I know some of they do)...

And, in case you're thinking wrong, or wondering, or it disturbs you... Easy: Give it away, throw it up or just put it in a box or something and that'll be it.

:D

They should write an article on how creepy it is that they're lurking D; I was going to share the story about how I killed that guy, but now I can't trust this place.

that was obviously a joke...

and I'd think it'd be kind of cool to have a glowing xylo band :anxious:
