Coldplay's "former sound"

Featured Replies

Hi everyone!

i was doing some thinking today and i discovered that i really missed coldplay's "former sound"...you know..the sound that they had when they first started off in Parachutes and AROBTTH. They were just so different from the rest, and that made them unique. When X&Y came out, i admit that it was slightly different from the other albums but it was easier to get used to; one could still hear their old style.

Am I the only one who missed it?

Like I said before, if the boys release something similar to AROBTTH or Parachutes people will say "Oh they are so boring, always the same songs!"

And when they try new sounds, all you hear is "I miss their old style"

When a band is not experimenting with new things (i.e. The Fray, Nickelback) fans get bored and it's hard for them to stay on top.

Coldplay's continued success is proof that trying new things is the way to go. Elvis Presley went from Blues to RocknRoll. Michael Jackson has all kind of songs (Rock, RnB, Blues etc...)

A band needs to try new things, doing the same old thing over and over again is just insane.

alright. i get what you mean: "change is central to progress". you're absolutely correct and i agree with you. It's just the nostalja i guess....

Again, I agree with this. Did everyone wants Parachutes five times over? They say they are doing things that they want to do, and I believe them. Chris tries different stuff, they are so versatile, they can do anything (my humble opinion). They can do acoustic, they can do loud, they can do contemplative, they can do bombastic, they can do joyous. They are not limited. Their talent lets them change, and we as the fans have to roll with it or be done with them if we disagree.

whilst i completely agree with macky about how they had to evolve to stay at the top, they changed too much in terms of their sound and style with MX and became almost unrecognizable as coldplay and totally moved into the mainstream pop territory; and thats the main reason it wont be remembered like viva and a rush in 10-15 years time.

wisest thing now would be to go back to their roots and maybe come up with something fresh, but at the same time reminiscent of their older material.

I believe they still can be different if they would go a little bit back to their old sound. Indeed Viva had a refreshing new sound, very Coldplay, but very different. So it is possible.

I also think it´s still a good idea to do an acoustic album.

And whats so bad about sounding a bit more like the first 2 albums, I mean for instance John Mayer always has the same typical JM sound, and people love it..

That's a fine conclusion.

think its a pretty common theory that the first 2 albums are the best, and thats one that i believe. X&Y was a simple biggest band in the world album and the last 2 have been trying something new which is definately something they had to do. Its difficult to writer similar stuff 10 years after the fact, they've all experienced so much to change everything in their lives. Its like Mike Skinner couldn't write about having no money, instead he did rehab and fame!

But the answer the question yes i miss the 'innocent' songs of pre 2003, luckily i have them on my ipod so can listen to them daily!

i don't think Coldplay have ever been THAT "different from the rest"...

they have always made music inspired by other artists, but they manage to insert some element which is uniquely Coldplay, and that is not something that they've lost, even though they've dipped into other styles over the years.

so, to me, Coldplay don't have one particular sound, they just have... like, a way of approaching music which is uniquely theirs, and that transfers over to whatever different style they decide to try out.
