Grammys Flashback '02: Coldplay's Anticlimax

Grammys Flashback '02: Coldplay's Anticlimax

Some bands take a while to get recognized by the music community, but Coldplay wasn't one of them. The band that has become one of the world's most popular alternative bands for over a decade struck gold for its first album, Parachutes, at the 2002 Grammys.

The British band was nominated for two Grammy Awards that year after their debut album took off thanks to their hit single "Yellow," which was nominated for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group.

Without front man Chris Martin, the band's musicians Guy Berryman, Johnny Buckland, and Will Champion speak to ET's special correspondent that year, 'N Sync's JC Chasez, on the red carpet of an after-party.

As exciting as it was to receive their first Grammy, it was quite anti-climactic for the band, as not only were they without their front man but also received an award in untelevised category.

"It was kind of weird because it was all before the TV cameras came in and there wasn't actually that many people in there," lead guitarist Jonny Buckland says. "It was pretty cool, though."

Even more anti-climactic was Guy Berryman's message for the folks back home in the U.K. After a stubborn response to Chasez's request, Berryman says into the camera unexcitedly, "Well, I guess we'll say hello. Hello."

Coldplay won Best Alternative Music Album for A Rush of Blood to the Head the following year with Martin present, and won Record of the Year for "Clocks" the year after that.

The band has amassed six Grammys over the years and has an opportunity to increase that total to eight this year with nominations for Best Rock Album for Mylo Xyloto and Best Rock Performance for "Charlie Brown."
