Coldplay - Oceans (Cover)

Featured Replies

Finished late last night. Let me know what you think or what could be improved.

I noticed the bass seemed a little out of sync at the end but I already that in my project file.

I decided to sing the low octave because I'm still not entirely comfortable with my falsettos.

Thanks for listening! :D

Holy crap. If you didn't put "cover" I would have thought it was the original 100%. (Besides the voice) - Not saying its bad. It's good but you can tell it's not Chris. Good job. How did you get he "bloop" noise? What program do you use? And what's that synth/string noise? I'm sorry. It's just great production.

Don't worry about your falsetto. It's beautiful too.

forgot to say 'the end'

srsly though, good job! Got the 'boops' and everything

How did you do the radar sound? an electronic pad?

BEAUTIFUL! :loveshower:

Haha!! I'll have to add that in. That'd be awesome.

Thank you so much Sleep! You're very kind. I use Propellerhead's Reason and their Balance interface for recording.

The Boop sound was a built in instrument called the Subtractor Polyphonic Synthesizer. After a little trial and error I used the CCRMA E Piano preset and lowered the AMP Envelope slider R, added some Reverb with the RV7000 and that's it.

And by synth string noise I'm assuming you're talking about the sound right at the beginning after the acoustic comes in? I used a glass guitar slide and a neat little device called an E-Bow. Jonny uses the same thing.

Your cover was excellent, what are the chords used so I could use for piano?

I could give you the tabs I used on the guitar, but as usual Chris' tuning is so unusual I've got no idea what to even begin calling the chord. The key for the song though is F#. I'll take a stab at the chord names though. You may have to play around with the exact notes. He starts off with B5, transitioning down to F#/A#, F#M/A, and lastly D/F#. The chorus chords are F#5, and an A(something).

Sorry I couldn't be of more help =/ Hope that works.

Thanks I'll try that later! :D

Did you do all of that by ear? It's unbelivable you did all that in a day!

Yes! Thank you! I wouldn't have been able to do it without the video from BBC Radio 1 though. Figuring out the acoustic took the longest. As I said, Chris' tuning is so strange, I never would have been able to guess without seeing his finger position. But its amazing how sonic-ly simple the whole song is.

Yeah I know its much easier to learn something by ear when you see someone playing it. Just checked your channel how long have you been playing {I noticed it was your first video}

ps. You've earned another sub! :)

Thank you Atlas! I've been playing guitar for probably 12 years or so. Bass came pretty easily with that. I've started dabbling more in piano lately. I've been recording covers for a couple years now but I feel like I'm finally starting to get good enough, (not just with playing, but also recording studio production and mixing and mastering) to start posting some of it for others to enjoy.

ps. My cover of Magic will be going up next week!

I'll be on the lookout ;) Yeah I would really enjoy more of the covers. I know i'm probably bothering you with a load of questions but...

when doing the acoustic did you play and sing or layer everything

  • Author

Nah I layer. When I get more familiar with a song I might try it, but in studio recording its just easier to focus when you do one bit at a time.

Please oh please could you provide us the tuning and maybe even the tabs for the acoustic guitar part? I would be forever greatful!

I posted these on another thread but I'll add them here as well. My apologies but I don't know the chord names. The closest I got for tuning was DGDGAd, with the capo on the 4th fret as you mentioned. The chords themselves are pretty simple. The fret numbers are based on no capo just an FYI

The Verse chords. Really gotta stretch for that last one! I hope you have long fingers! I barely made it. The 4th chord is just a quick change on the half count between the 3rd and 5th chords. If you watch early in the video from BBC you can see Chris do it.

d----0-----0------0-----0-----0----

A----0-----0------0-----0-----0----

G----0-----0------0-----0-----0----

D----11----11----11---9-----9----

G----11----11----11---11----9----

D----9-----8------7-----7-----6----

Then for the chorus, he changes the order around a bit but its these basic three.

d-----0----0----0

A-----0----0----0

G-----8----7----6

D-----9----9----8

G-----8----7----6

D-----0----0----0

Holy dude! It's awesome! Would you upload the instrumental? :D

Man, this is really good! It sounds almost exactly like the real thing, and your falsetto at the end sounded great!

Kinda what I was goin for! But thank you so much. I'm about to start on A Sky Full of Stars. Haven't really done EDM before so it'll be interesting to see where it goes!

edit

i really liked your voice

and the instrumental is identical to the preview

i think you should do a cover of always in my head, it would be great

Nice cover! Can you also upload this song's tutorial as well? :D

Good cover, but I think it will be more useful to you if I give you some constructive criticism. You really need to work on the timing of your singing and you were off pitch for quite a lot of the notes. I'm just being honest, hopefully you will find it constructive. Apart from the singing, everything else was great.
