Featured Replies

If I could watch this live with this song I would prolly have goosebumps :P

I watched it live, no goosebumps coz the voices singing were very crinkly tbh

First off i loved the song! But it sounds nothing like coldplay which is weird. Wish I was here sounded like coldplay but its amazing chris can write something so different :)

Oh you were there? Or is it still going? How was it so far?

I think the voice is good. Well, for anthems is acceptable. I have feelings that the singers are americans.

whats the point of writing something for someone else if you are going to use the same process you use with your band

Invictus" is a short Victorian poem by the English poet William Ernest Henley (1849–1903). It was written in 1875 and published in 1888 in his first volume of poems, Book of Verses, where it is the fourth poem in the section Life and Death (Echoes).[1] It originally had no title.[1] Early printings contained only the dedication To R. T. H. B.—a reference to Robert Thomas Hamilton Bruce (1846–1899), a successful Scottish flour merchant and baker who was also a literary patron.[2] The title "Invictus" (Latin for "unconquered")[3] was added by editor Arthur Quiller-Couch when the poem was included in The Oxford Book of English Verse.[4][5]

William Ernest Henley is best known by virtue of this single poem.[7]

One of Henley's legs was amputated due to complications arising from tuberculosis. Immediately after the amputation, he received news that another operation would have to be done on his other leg. However, he decided to enlist the help of a different doctor named Joseph Lister. Under Lister's care he was able to keep his other leg by undergoing intensive surgery on his remaining foot.[8] While recovering from this surgery in the infirmary, he was moved to write the words of "Invictus". This period of his life, coupled with the reality of an impoverished childhood, plays a major role in the meaning behind the poem; it is also the prime reason for this poem's existence.[9]

Because why would you pay alot of money for something written by chris when u could pay someone alot less for something that sounds very similar. If i was paying chris, id want it to sound like coldplay. Its like putting his signature on a peice of music. He did exactly that with wish i was here.

it just doesnt make sense, at the point why dont involve all the band and make it directly a Coldplay song. Chris can put his signature even without sounding like Coldplay, like he did in Homecoming, Want, All the good things come to an end, Beach Chair, Most Kingz, shall i continue? None of those songs has something similar to Coldplay yet you can hear Chris's presence in it.

Even if he doesnt have a proper solo carreer Chris doesnt need to sound like Coldplay to leave a signature

it was not an argument, i wanted to understand your point of view better, thats all

I was trying to say not that chris cant or shouldn't make music that doesnt sound like coldplay, but more surprised that he did (in a good way).

Invictus Games Anthem penned by Chris Martin, of Coldplay

I still don't get it. What exactly does it mean, "penned"?

Did he write the melody? Or did he just decide which singer had to sing which part of the lyrics?

To pen a song, means you are either writing the lyrics ( which in this case we know he didnt do ) OR you are a composer, and you write the melody or music for lyrics to a song. So I am thinking, Chris came in, and got on the piano in the studio, put down some music go to along with the poem ....its not hard nowadays to play something on a digital piano and have it spit out music sheets of what you are playing so Chris doesnt need to be able to read music, just play it and the piano and other recording machines do that for you

Good point, thats what I thought too. Imo, Chris has done well at composing anthem songs like this, its good to see how he develops and explores on different types of genre. Coldplay has been on the same route until x&y era, then vlv is one of the best albums of all time due to their massive and amazing changing sound. Mx and gs are the albums where the band attempts to explore new ways of composing music. Some people say poor, some people say amazing. But to me, all albums that Chris had composed, whether collaboration with other artists or with the band, have become increasingly great soundings to my ears :)
