Coldplay's Chris Martin to write opening anthem for Prince Harry's Invictus Games

Published: 02 July 2014

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is to write the anthem for the opening ceremony of Prince Harry’s Invictus Games — the international sports event for wounded service personnel to be held in London.

An audience of 5,000 is expected at the South Lawn of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 10 September for the spectacular prelude to the four-day event. It will include a performance of the anthem by Martin.

The opening ceremony, to be shown live on the BBC, has been put together by Kim Gavin, the creative director of the 2012 Olympics closing ceremony.

It will include a flypast by The Red Arrows and displays by The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Queen’s Colour Squadron, 63 Squadron RAF Regiment. They will be joined by bands from the Royal Marines, the Army and the RAF.

Tickets for the Invictus Games went on sale today. More than 400 wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women, from 14 nations, will compete in the event from September 11-14.

Mayor Boris Johnson said: “I am delighted that the first ever Invictus Games will take place on London’s newest park and in its world-class sporting venues.”

Sir Keith Mills, chairman of the Invictus Games, said: “The Opening Ceremony of the Invictus Games will be a fantastic way to kick off what we know will be an inspirational four days of sport.

“The men and women who will be competing have already given so much and we hope the Opening Ceremony will demonstrate to them just how much we recognise this.”

One of those in training and hoping to be selected for the British Armed Forces team is Lance Corporal John-James Chalmers, 26, of 42 Commando Royal Marines, who suffered severe injuries in an IED blast in Afghanistan in 2011. The Edinburgh-based competitor, known as JJ, hopes to take part in athletics and cycling.

He said: “The Invictus Games have given a whole international community of wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women something to strive for. For us it’s about much more than four days of sport.”

The Invictus Games are supported and organised by The Royal Foundation of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry and the Ministry of Defence. Tickets cost £12.85 from http://www.invictusgames.org

Prince Harry speaks of "real struggle" organising inaugural Invictus Games

Prince Harry has spoken of the "real struggle" he has had organising the inaugural Invictus Games - a competition for injured members of the armed forces.

"This is basically my full-time job at the moment, making sure that we pull this off," he told BBC Radio 2 earlier today.

Championed by Prince Harry, the Games will see sick, injured and wounded service personnel compete in eight sports at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

More than 300 competitors from 13 countries are expected to come to the British capital for the event, which will be held from September 10 to 14.

"It's been a real struggle actually," said Prince Harry.

"Anyone listening out there, I would say if you're going to try and plan something this big in under a year, make sure you've either got [Organising Committee chairman] Sir Keith Mills with you or don't bother doing it at all.

"It's been great"

The Games are in the mould of the Warrior Games in the United States.

Prince Harry added: "We decided it [the Warrior Games] was such a wonderful concept, we should steal it, make it bigger, make it better and bring it back home.

"We're still trying to work out whether we do it next year or the year after and whether it's going to be within the UK or whether it's going to be abroad.

"But the legacy has already started and if we can use it as a stepping stone for some of these individuals to move on to the Paralympics, great.

"If some of them want to use it as a one-off to get themselves back on the road and then as a stepping stone to employment, then just as good.

"We will use the Invictus Games for as long as it's needed."

Competition will take place in athletics, archery, wheelchair basketball, road cycling, indoor rowing, wheelchair rugby, swimming and sitting volleyball.

A crowd of up to 5,000 people are expected for the Opening Ceremony on September 10, with the Royal Air Force to perform a fly-past during the Ceremony, which will be on the South Lawn of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

There will also be a series of ceremonial displays and a performance of the official Invictus Games anthem, penned by Chris Martin from Coldplay.

Tickets for the Ceremony as well as for all sessions for the Games, cost £12.85 ($22/€16) and can be purchased here (http://axs.com/invictusgames) .

And tickets for the Closing Concert, with performances from the likes of Foo Fighters, Kaiser Chiefs and James Blunt, will go on sale at 9am British Summer Time tomorrow and will be available from the same website.

Choir weeps over Coldplay uncoupling

Spare a thought for members of the Games Makers Choir, who thought they would be singing alongside Coldplay’s Chris Martin at the Invictus Games opening ceremony next week, the Prince-Harry-backed sporting event for wounded soldiers.

“We have some very exciting news!” ran a jubilant email to choristers, dated August 1. “Chris Martin, of Coldplay (yes Coldplay), has created an anthem for the occasion, and we’ve been asked to provide the choir accompaniment for this brand new song.” Head honchos at the choir even started circulating a prospective rehearsal schedule to see if they could round up enough members of the choir — who are made up of London 2012 volunteers from all over the country — to participate in the event being held at the Queen Elizabeth Park.

However, just 12 days later, members of the choir were forwarded this email from the Invictus organisers: “Since last we spoke, things have changed regarding the choir,” it read, ominously. “Coldplay have requested that we use a choir they have previously worked with.”

Coldplay’s PR office didn’t respond directly to The Londoner asking why the choir thought they had been booked. “Lead vocals will be sung by serving military servicemen,” said a spokesman, adding that one of the established choirs that sang at the opening of the Olympics Games was now being used.

Games Makers Choir manager Liz Stainthorpe has brushed it off. “It’s just one of those things,” she said. So is it crossed wires, an almighty cock-up or a verdict on the choir? We contacted Invictus but they never got back.

so coldplay are very hands on. but still not clear whether any would actually show up for the event.

I have tickets for the opening ceremonies as I heard rumours that Chris would be performing, now with those photos you just showed of him back in LA I'm not too sure hes even gonna be here. They have been promoting him to be performing in the past but now seems maybe not lol

so chris won't be performing the song:

What a privilege to work with HRH Prince Harry and Chris Martin from Coldplay on the song "Invictus" for the forthcoming Invictus games, which I will be performing live on The One Show on Wednesday 10th September.

The song will be available for immediate download after the show, with proceeds going to The Invictus Games charity.

Please support this fantastic cause.

Its a poem.... Chris just wrote the backing music is my thinking NOT the words

Out of the night that covers me,

Black as the pit from pole to pole,

I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance

I have not winced nor cried aloud.

Under the bludgeonings of chance

My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears

Looms but the horror of the shade,

And yet the menace of the years

Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,

I am the master of my fate,

I am the captain of my soul.
