The "Let's Learn English" Thread

Featured Replies

Obviously, in this forum we use English, but there are many coldplayers whose native language is not English and do not speak it correctly (I'm one of them). So, I think it's a good idea that here we can ask questions about the language, and native speakers or those who know speak it well could help. Also make translations and other things. Let me know what you think. :)

Sounds nice. English is not my first language too so you're not alone :D

I mostly learned how to speak/write common English in this forum! :cheesy: So I approve this thread :wacky:

Yes, that’s a good idea. My English isn’t that well either.

Here's one of my questions:

What's the difference between until, till and 'til?

nothing really its just that people are lazy

Agree like some people too lazy to write apostrophe [emoji12] [emoji12]

Touché! Lol. Still we are so lazy with the written word these days :scribe:

Well I actually teach English. I can only do it part time though and I'm not very good at it :D

Anyway first let me assure you that habitually our writing standards immediately worsen when we're on the internet or using mobile devices, particularly in using correct grammar and punctuation. This is especially true for multilingual speakers and non-native speakers of English.

So don't get too worked up about it.

As far as I know until and till can be used interchangeably when talking about a period of time before something happens. As for 'til, I don't personally use or teach it. I'm not sure it's correct.

http://grammar.about.com/ is a great website I recommend to my students for English tips. You should check it out.

Random things that I learned:

"This band is shit!"

Meaning:

"This band is shit!"

"This band is the shit!"

Meaning:

"This band is fucking awesome!"

What lazy people write instead of "their":

"there, theyre"

Things that improve your English skills IMMENSELY:

Find a tv show that you like, watch it in English. With subtitles or not.

Or, if you're as crazy as me, read fanfics about these shows in English until you know all kinds of British/American sayings, varying by the autors that write the stories lol.

hahaha  i like it how you said that at the end :P

When was my first time learning english? Oooh, I'm a lazy girl. My mom forced me to learn when I was 8. I didnt want to learn english in the first place. But time goes by, everyone is starting to speak english on texts, social media, and all and the language has become internationalized I guess :P I'm still not very good at writing nor even talking in conversation. Interestingly, some people now find myself I sound like an American, which I never try to sound like them  but the very first time I learned I think I used more American accent since I took an english course -- out of my awareness until I went to the States, I started to realize that I had been using their accent for so long :P

I'm doing English project and I'm not sure about these sentences:

They have been creating music since 1965 until 1994.

After their success Pink Floyd decided to make an album dedicated to Syd.

Roger Waters is famous for his input in another great Pink Floyd album “The Wall”.

David Gilmour with Rick Wright and Nick Mason continued creating music.

I think the first is wrong, see, they are no longer making music so i dont think is right to use "have been creating" but i think its sounds better as "they have created music from 1965 to 1994", the other two are correct and i think the last one sounds better as "david gilmour continued creating music with rick wright and nick mason"

YAY ENGRISH :cheesy:

A few days I ago I was sitting in the car with my best friend, and she had the radio on. After 5 minutes listening to it I finally realised she had chosen an English radio channel with some DJ chattering away and I was like "Wow I didn't even notice "

That made me somewhat a tiny pathetic little amount happy ahahah :dunce2:
