im sure most of us know that downloading free music is illegal, but most of us still do it anyways. Do you think that downloading is a good way to expose artists that otherwise would not be really exposed, or are you opposed to downloading. Are we ripping off the artists when we download thier music?

I CAN'T download music. Kazaa or any of those types of software always mess up my computer.

I hate all downloading programs, back in the day everyone used IRC and no one had a problem, but now that they started making programs for it people are getting sued and arrested, it sucks. Oh and no we don't rip off the artists, they make jsut as much money either way. The Record Labels are the only ones to lose money and maybe the retailers. I can't remember where I heard this one quote but i love it.

I know it's illegal, and I don't care. I'm not going to go out and waste perfectly good money on a cd, where's about that I only like one or two songs from. If I like all the songs, then yes, I'll buy it. Besides, I preview songs a lot from downloading.

I heard that the supreme court of canada legalized it. Am i right?

I buy an album when I know it's good. If that means d/loading a few tracks before I buy it, so be it.

Canada did legalize it, i dont think people should be fined for listening to music.

well I do download music but I don't d/l like the whole albums...if someone recommends me a band or a group; I d/l a few songs and if I liked the songs I go and buy the album, simple as that...

If I only like one or two songs from the artist then there's no sense going out and buying the whole album, but if they're a band that I really like then I think money is well spent on the actually cd's.

I download music all the time. I use a pretty crappy program...and I've heard that they are going to start sueing in the UK soon. Basically I read somewhere that they are searching the different types of software that people use and WINMX(the one I use) is one of the main ones they are searching...what they do is they message you or email you to delete the program from your computer..and if you dont then they fine you or something..freaks me out a bit but like alot of others have mentioned I like to hear songs before I buy a whole album. :)

Well if a band is just starting out it is a great way to get exposure but also it is good when your a student and you can't afford to get every CD that you want. I do buy cd's still though.

ftps is the way to go. Sure I download, it's my way of reviewing albums before I decide whether or not to buy them.

I think a lot of people have trouble realizing that it's a two-sided issue, and that both sides are essentially right to some degree.

 

So I do download music from time to time, and I do think that it helps expose me to things I might otherwise not hear, and I do spend a (relatively) large amount of money on buying music, and I often buy things that I've never even heard before, in addition to things I've previewed on the internet, because for me that's an even better way of discovering new things. But I also think that there are people who abuse it, and use it as an alternative to buying music.

 

Legality aside, the other problem I have with mp3's is that they sound like crap. I know a lot of people who can't tell the difference between a CD and an mp3, but I can, and I can't stand listening to even the better quality mp3's, which is probably half the reason I spend so much on getting the real copies of things.
