My random Coldplay things today: - saw a car with the plate M XY....my first thought was Mylo XYloto or X&Y... - there is a big city street festival today, and on one of the flea market stands I saw the VLV CD (but ridiculously overpriced and i already have it anyway) - there is this band covering popular songs from the 2000s and 2010s throughout the day...but for some reason I can't explain, Coldplay is never ever among the covered songs, not today and not any other time I saw one of those coverbands play. I can understand it's not your typical party song choice, but still...

This must be a major mishearing if you heard it in ASFOS :P You mean AOAL, right ? :D As for I Ran Away, what Chris probably means is that the love he has on call from the person he runs away from is more than he can handle - he knows it is actually a good thing to be loved by this person, but his stomach is already full... I personally always sing a "day is not so full" version because that's how I first understood it. Besides, at some other points the official lyrics of I Ran Away clearly differ from what Chris is actually singing...

Just read through this thread. I could type out a long response addressing a lot of points, which I'm not gonna do now because it is very redundant to stuff that I feel has been said over and over again (and I'm on mobile). So just a few keywords (not every Oldplayer may agree with this, it's my personal views) - overproduction, more 'plastic' rather than organic feeling, fake drums - influences - regardless of genre, it used to be critically acclaimed / artsy ones (Radiohead, Bunnymen, Travis, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire, Jeff Buckley, Kraftwerk, U2..), nowadays artists who are generally perceived as commercial, superficial (Drake, Rihanna, Selena Gomez,...) - focus on show and gimmicks rather than the music itself (Chris bouncing around instead of delivering a better vocal performance; not to mention lip-sync scandal; use of backing tracks not sparsely any more but backing tracks literally make up a significant part of the show now !) - less enchanting melodies, sometimes paired with sub-par lyrics, especially on GS - product placement in music video...something that the old band categorically denied to ever happen, a long time ago - this neat and subtle, unassuming layering that makes the first 3/4 albums such a delight to listen to is missing. Partly probably through production, partly through songwriting - Chris's singing style - he used to draw out words, especially in emotionally charged lyrics, now he sings more like a rapper/hiphopper, making the words sound as short as possible. Applies to older songs in new live performances as well - example: Come up to meeeeet youuuu, tell you I'm soooorrryy NOW: Come up to meetyu, tell you I'msorry Its a very lazy singing style that doesn't do these songs justice. All in all, much of the authenticity and things that used to set Coldplay apart from your average rock or pop band have gotten lost on the way.

Oh, you're right ! Well belated happy 1st birthday, Oldplaying thread ;) You know what's sad ? That I like the song "Electricity" by Ricky Gervais feat. Chris Martin, which is a deliberate Coldplay parody and essentially a not particularly original combination of several Oldplay sound elements with sub-par lyrics, a lot more than most of the real Coldplay's recent output !

I haven't managed to read through all the posts in the Oldplaying thread that have been made since i was gone yet, but about Chris going solo - I think that would be the worst thing to happen. Without the band to constrain him (notably Will, who seems to try and preserve as much credibility as he can, for example by vetoeing the line 'Drinks on me'), Chris could completely live out his musical dreams inspired by EDM and hip hop or artists like Drake, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Ariana Grande etc. A Chris solo album would probably consist of him singing (in a less crooning and more rap/hip hop style) over forgettable synth and drumloops similar to XMTS. No thanks...

Hi @66, your collection is very impressive ! I am collecting as well, with a focus on anything pre-Viva Era (but my collection is nowhere near as comprehensive). About the duplicates, are you selling them ? if yes, which ones do you have ?

This is my personal nightmare. Ever since it happened to me many years ago on a train (with a classical piece, not Coldplay), I always check the connection. Often I even check that nothing gets through by already starting the music but still holding the earplugs in my hand (I have gotten a bit too paranoid, I know). Despite all this, it happened to me again last year when I came out of a supermarket and I played the beginning of Sweet Marianne for the street rather than for my ears. Luckily, there was only one person in the street.

I know about the lip-sync mayhem, but autotune ? Where ?

Thanks for sharing ! It is refreshing to see that some radio hosts are still able to conduct in-depth interviews rather than laughing with Chris about his shoes or whether he prefers muffins or donuts for breakfast or "how did it feel to phone Beyonce" or something. Great interview, i wish it was longer. It's sad to hear Chris talk this way about X&Y, though. The earliest memory question was brilliant.
