Funnily enough, I do know their previous sound and I didn't like it. I liked some tracks of their latest album though !

I just gave ID's Smoke and Mirrors a listen since it was being discussed here. It reminded me that I can only stand one man's falsetto in contemporary music....and that man is called Chris Martin. ID's vocal style is driving me crazy. Also, someone please teach them what a strong melody is. They have got rhythms all right, but this album lacks any memorable melodies. (As do many other current albums, I have the feeling. Coldplay is one of the melodically best bands)

I'm a bit disappointed that everyone sees Speed of Sound just as a Clocks reshash. Yes, musically the notes in the chords are the same, just in a different pattern. But Speed Of Sound has an entirely different feel due to the theme, synths, drums, just the whole atmosphere being so different. Imho Coldplay didn't rip themselves off. I'm glad Coldplay made both Clocks and Speed Of Sound. Don't care if the chords are the same if the song feels completely different.

Used to stay up 40 hrs or something in a row, too, some years ago, during one of my darker life periods. But honestly, all it makes me feel like is drunk (drunk but NOT high, so high, so high.....)and after a while it emotionally and physically wrecked me. I still have nights in which I don't manage to fall asleep, and the day after feels like a living hell. I appreciate if it doesn't have negative effects on you and helps you see things differently...for me, sleep deprivation was/is hell.

No... I can only emphasize, think about specifically what will change in a sky full of stars in 8000 years. Here's another hint - 4000 years from that it will be different again. I am pretty sure you heard about this somewhere at some point in your life (unless you have a particular aversion against astronomy ;))

Am I the only one who doesn't care if bands slightly emulate other musicians on their debut album ? I think Coldplay still quickly built their own signature sound based on these influences. Also, there is always a thing such as incorporating and improving others's style. There have been accusations about melodies in Viva La Vida, and while I still (of course !) hope they did not plagiarise it and it's all just a coincidence, I have to say that VLV is definitely better synthesis of melodies and a much better "end product" than the Satriani/Stevens songs containing those melodies. (Still I hope they did not plagiarize it...that would be unethical.Being inspired is one thing, directly copying another). (I'm saying this in defence of Parachutes, not ID whose work frankly I never liked...)

I have lactose intolerance. Which is a bad thing because I love foamed milk coffee products like Latte Macchiato or Cappuccino. At home I use lactose-free milk and outside I use lactase pills, but unfortunately I never really got the hang of an exact dosing or timing, which is why I sometimes get problems after a Latte Macchiato or Cappuccino.

Love this idea ! But this takes a lot of thought. Hope I will find the time and then come back to post the results here :)

I like the guitars in general but I would agree that neither the vocals or the recordings of that time have come close technical perfection. Still, maybe that even adds to the atmospheric effects for me :)
