Never seen a band fall from grace like Coldplay have...
In today's mainstream, you have: -Worth It -Hey Mama -Anaconda -Black Magic like songs. I don't think they're a work of art or anything. Quite plastic-y, fake, lyrics suck, feel "hollow", etc. Coldplay's music is light-years away (and better) than our mainstream today if we take the four songs listed above as examples of what forms mainstream today. If you're talking about really good music that's in the mainstream ex: Love Me Like You Do, Hello, etc. those are starting to reach the level of Coldplay's latest album. These songs would find a spot in the middle of the rankings, and even though they don't have the Coldplay magic to them, they're still pretty good. But rare, in the mainstream. However, I'd consider most of Coldplay's work "different" enough to stand out from the mainstrean, looking from a completely unbiased perspective. Even though there are songs in the mainstream that are better than some songs on AHFOD, they have the structure of mainstream music. There's something different about Coldplay that makes it stand out so I still don't think they're completely mainstream yet. The song structure in some songs is starting to show mainstream signs, however, and all they did with this album is make a better album than GS and maybe a couple others (haven't ranked this album completely yet, although I definetely know now it's in the bottom 3) and they also went more towards the mainstream line. Coldplay needs to go away from that mainstream line, make more originial structure (example, Kaleidoscope has a fairly unique structure) and make music that sounds truly original, fresh, new, and mostly never tried before. I'd love it if they tried a song or two with 432 HZ tuning -- some say that kind of music can have "effects" on you. Not sure how much I believe that, but one thing's for sure, you know if they try different tuning's they're starting to disappear from making "mainstream" music. Unfortuantely it hasn't happened yet, but hopefully Chris takes a break between the upcoming tour and the next album and really just look back at Coldplay's discography and see what heppneed to them ever since GS. (And what happened to more of the deep, true melancholic side since around X&Y or Viva -- I love MX, however the superb songs cover up a bit of a flaw in the "richness" and "deep" I guess, overall (though a few songs on MX were true and kind of like their older music).

You are right about Coldplay's crawling closer and closer to mainstream. X&Y was the first tiny hint of pop in Coldplay, Viva la Vida or Death And All His Friends was a little poppier, MX even poppier, but still mainly keeping real instruments. I still don't think any of these albums are true pop, not even MX, that one has Princess of China and Up In Flames is a little poppy but that's it really, Oh and Paradise has a poppier feel too. But really most of the rest of the songs in MX are just colorful, with pop here and there. I guess you could call MX pop but not in the "mainstream" sense. (Not today's mainstream anyway, it was closer to the mainstream back then however, which I absolutely loved for the most part). GS was their first album where they started heavily using electronic. They may have had electronic influences in MX but here in GS they pretty much went full on electronic. The song structure itself was also creeping quite closer to mainstream, so it wasn't just them wanting to try out electronics for a change I guess, their song structure was also getting more mainstream wheras MX was still a little far off from true mainstream structure. AHFOD, while crawling away from the full-on electronics of GS, the song structure just got more mainstream which I'd hope had never've happened. I want Coldplay to veer away from mainstream and try something different, and in some songs they certainly did but you can tell this is the most pop album. At least the real drums are crawling back now. But now Coldplay's going to mainstream a little. I still think they haven't crossed the line fully, like in AOAL I personally think it's different from mainstream of this day, but it kind of feels like it in a way. I don't know lol, It's getting closer. Hopefully Coldplay takes a break and realize they kind of need to step it up a bit. Again as for AOAL I think it's still got originality in it (yay for actual guitar, that's one thing AOAL has that most mainstream stuff today don't) and the drumbeat is very original, yes it definetely has some mainstream aspects to it. But for me it's not full mainstream yet which is good. I still love AHFOD and think it's not full mainstream but it's crawling closer than ever before.......

I do agree that the Oldplay is definetely superior to Newplay (outside of Mylo Xyloto) but really I don't think the last 2 albums are "complete garbage". They are still creative and different songs, and I find then very very enjoyable, much better than the mainstream. It's like your freaking out because they've turned to total mainstream. They haven't gone full mainstream and never will because of Guy and Jonny. Chris' taste has gone pretty much full blown mainstream however. But I guess it's a part of how you see music. The more you despise mainstream, pop, and everything about it the more you'll see Coldplay's newer music as mainstream just because it's a little poppy. I think that's what most people who call Coldplay "mainstream" think of now. It's just a little poppy, must be mainstream. However, in my opinion I really like pop if it's done well, AKA Coldplay's pop. That's why I don't think it's mainstream because mainstream is absolute trash nowadays outside of a few gems.
