25-Jul-08: Philadelphia - Wachovia Center - Tickets, Preview, Meetups, Review/Photos
COLDPLAY!!!!! http://babygarrett.blogspot.com/2008/07/coldplay.html 7:00 - We arrive and find our seats (which are right by the stage, up high. Nice.). It's pretty empty. Hmmm.... oh crap. It starts at 8:00, not 7:00 Oh well. A whole hour to hang out and talk with my hubby with no interruptions. We discuss everything from Celine Dion in concert to the theology of evil. 8:00 - The opening, opening band starts. They're pretty good. Apparently they're some local band who won a contest to play here. A little toe tapping occurs, but seeing as I can't remember their name, I guess they weren't that good. 8:30 - Santogold. Just... oh, my. Hands down, the WORST band I've ever seen live. And that's saying something, friends. These guys come out onstage wearing white shirts, black pants, and white sneakers. Right away, I am thinking this can't be good. Then out come the two backup singers/dancers which I mistake as someone's mom and aunt. Nice outfits, ladies. I feel bad for you. Apparently Miss Santogold has bridesmaids syndrome in which she must humiliate any other female who shares a spotlight with her. Then, out comes the, um... singer? I think singer. She, too, is decked out in black and white. And then comes the... um... music? It's like new wave Pat Benatar, but not in any good sense of either one of those things. And the backup... singers? Dancers? Not sure. The moves are strictly old school... again, not in a good way. The sad part, their fans probably think I just don't understand them'. That's okay with me. Now I know that most opening bands like to warm up the crowd by playing fun songs and getting the crowd into music and having a good time. I think Santogold decided to come at it from another angle - warm up the crowd by being so bad and so laughable (seriously... Jamie and I couldn't stop cracking up) that the crowd is hysterically excited to see whatever comes next. Just please, for the love of all things that are good, make them stop. Moving on. 9:00 - Obnoxious drunk guys arrive and sit right in front of us. You know the guys, I mean. They are at every concert. They arrive drunk, use "F you!" as a term of endearment amongst each other, fight with everyone around them (including the old gray-haired lady in front of them who is pissed because they keep spilling beer on her - true story, friends), and shout "WOO" a lot before the show even starts. Not to be confused with the fun drunk guys at the concerts. They also arrive drunk and shout "WOO" a lot, but are funny, dance a lot, and are having a good time. I spend the next 30 minutes just hoping they leave us alone. Which they do. I guess my ESP was on target last night (Leave us alone... leave us alone... we aren't even here.) Oh, look, one of their girlfriends just showed up. She's classy. 9:30 - Coldplay!!!! They open with Violet Hill. Awesome. It's followed by hit after hit after hit. From Yellow to Fix You, to Cemeteries of London (awesome). 10:00ish - Viva La Vida comes on. The crowd goes completely wild. I call our ticket benfactor to share the awesomeness. :) Then, toward the end of the show, they run off stage, down the side of the crowd on the floor, up one of the stair cases, through a stadium entrance and disappear. Where did they go? And then a few minutes later, out they pop at the back of the stadium into the stands to perform The Scientist. Amazing. This is my favorite Coldplay song for personal reasons. The crowd goes nuts. I discover that my camera has super hero zoom power. Nice. 11:00 - Encore! Out they come and play Politik, Lovers in Japan, and Death and All His Friends. Woo Hoo. The coolest part was when confetti blasted from the ceiling every time the chorus came around on Lovers in Japan. So fun!!!! 11:20 - Second Encore. Green Eyes. Nice. Chris jokes about them having to get nose jobs and that's why they had to change the concert date. 11:30 The end. Party's over. Go home, find out Evie did take her bottle and the girls were great and are both upstairs asleep. Nice end to an amazing night.

Ask the Oracle on Coldplay.com (Now in session!)
The Oracle is now in session July 26, 2008 10:50 am Your questions answered *July 25, 2008 - submitted by Luke, United Kingdom Q. If love, like air, can only be felt and not seen, how can we know that it exists? The Oracle replies: Well Luke, we know air exists, so following the same theory, the logical answer is that love does too. *July 25, 2008 - submitted by Samuel, United States of America Q. Which of Coldplay's members snore? The Oracle replies: The Oracle once shared a tour bus with the entire band and does not recall hearing anyone snore. *July 25, 2008 - submitted by luisadawn, United Kingdom Q. I want to sing with some rock bands (doing backing in the studio for records etc). Why is it so hard to do this when my vocal is so good? x The Oracle replies: The Oracle is happy to hear your positivity, but alas, most of the American Idol/X Factor entrants also think they are good. And they are not. So, ask other people if you are as good as you think. If it turns out you are talented, then you are still one of several thousand who possess that gift. But don't give up on your goal. Talent plus effort is usually a pretty good formula for success. *July 25, 2008 - submitted by Rachel, United States of America Q. Why do men have nipples? The Oracle replies: It has something to do with the fact that whilst in the womb we are of undetermined sex, so at that point we all have nipples. *July 25, 2008 - submitted by Rachel, United States of America Q. Is it possible for me to make "Coldplayism" a religion as well? Worshiping this miraculous band, of course. The Oracle replies: Although there is technically nothing to stop someone from worshiping Coldplay, Coldplayism may be seen as a cult or parody religion. There may also be an issue of copyright with using the name. And remember, as Oasis once said unto us, "Please don't put your life in the hands of a rock n roll band". http://www.coldplay.com/oracle.php?page=0

Carol leaves Countdown
Countdown meltdown as Carol Vorderman quits in row over pay Carol Vorderman has quit Countdown after more than 25 years in a shock announcement tonight. The 47-year-old presenter, who has been on the show since it began in 1982, has walked away from the programme amid claims of a pay dispute. She had been struggling to agree a new contract with the broadcaster as it tried to slash costs on the show by cutting wages of its on-screen talent. It is emerged that she may have been forced to take a pay cut had she agreed to a new deal with producers of the programme. Her departure comes just days after Des O'Connor also revealed he was leaving the show later this year after less than two years as frontman. While he said he was leaving the show as he was keen to return to live performing the pay crunch on the show is also believed to have been a factor. An insider said Vorderman's decison to leave was about more than just the pay deal. The source said: "They were still in the middle of negotiations when she announced she was leaving last night. 'She has chosen the moment to leave and it is entirely her own decision. 'I think there are lots of things behind her decision. Since Richard Whiteley died things have never been the same. We had Des Lynam and he only lasted 18 months. 'I know there was talk of her taking the chair when he left but that didn't come off. This Des is now going as well. 'I also think there is the whole thing of having to travel up to Leeds which takes its toll on her spending time with her children. So I think to be told the new deal was going to be tough as well made her think 'right I'm going to leave now'. It was the right moment now.' Vorderman is believed to be one of the best paid women on TV. She was negotiating the pay deal with Granada. John Whiston, Director of ITV Productions, who make the show under the Granada name for Channel 4 said: 'This is truly the end of an era and we shall be enormously sad to see Carol leaving the show as she has been at the heart and soul of Countdown for nearly 26 glorious years. 'She has played a major part in the success of this much loved programme and her fans have loved her cheery presence at the numbers board along with her amazing mathematical skills. 'The whole team will miss her very much and we all wish her well in the future." Damian Eadie series producer of Countdown for 12 years said: "The whole team are like one large family, and she’s been the figurehead for us all – there is a pun there that I know both her and Richard Whiteley would enjoy! The uncertainty over the future of the show comes as it was revealed that Rory Bremner is most likely to take over from Des O'Connor as the new presenter. Channel 4 is understood to have made 'discreet enquiries' about award winning comedian Bremner's availability in the coming months. He is the now favourite ahead of presenters like Aled Jones, Michael Aspel and Gyles Brandreth. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1038696/Countdown-meltdown-Carol-Vorderman-quits-row-pay.html
