:So how is everyone today?:
You bet! Maybe not. If the Yankees win tonight, I want whoever has a better chance of beating them in the World Series, which I think is the Cardinals. But for now, go Astros. :P

Elliott Smith
it's actually basement on THE hill... nitpicking, I know. I've only listened to it twice so far, (#3 is happening as we speak), but my initial impression is that far from being the best of 2004 (that would be Brian Wilson's Smile, in my opinion), it's actually his least consistant solo album. It sounds, well, unfinished, which is exactly what it is. However close it was to being completed when he died, it lacks the cohesiveness of the rest of his work. That's my opinion right now, anyway. There are moments of brilliance, to be sure. :D

John Lennon
I haven't heard the CD reissue, but I have one of the original copies on vinyl, and... it's not that great an album. :P

John Lennon
As murderers and assassins go, I don't think Mark David Chapman has that high of a name recognition. See how the headline refers to him not by name but as "John Lennon's killer." Whereas I can list Lee Harvey Oswald, John Wilkes Booth, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, Timothy McVeigh, and we all know instantly who they are and what they did without mentioning JFK, Lincoln, etc.

Columbus: Secrets From the Grave
great navigator... yeah, good for him for "discovering" a continent that had been inhabited for thousands of years. :P sorry I know that's not really related but I just had to throw that in there.

what makes a good song a good song? your opin. on structure
To me, a good test for a song is if it still sounds good (or interesting, or whatever) if you just play it with an acoustic guitar or a piano. If it doesn't, and only sounds good with the full band, it may have other qualities, but I don't really think it's a good song. So think of that and really obvious things like if it's too repetitive, not repetitive enough, too predictable, too self-consciously unpredictable... And I hate getting too bogged down in theoretical stuff (because it tends to make everything seems stale and lifeless, blah blah blah etc) but I've found that a sort of rule of thumb that works for me is that melodic simplicity is good (ie., you should be able to hum a good melody off the top of your head), and harmonic complexity is good (ie., an Fmaj7 is more interesting to me than just an F). And of course, what works for me may not for you or anybody else, etc. etc. etc. This post is too long and doesn't really say all that much.
