I used to love Coldplay but now I don't
i think im on the brink of becoming "tired" of coldplay as well as many of you have described. i still listen to them insanely regularly (so much that i think many other people on this board would find it overkill), but if the next album does not come out within the next five months or so to provide us all with some new stuff to chew over, i can practically hear my obsession with all things coldplay fading into just love. and love can be shared with other bands (for me its the beatles, U2, death cab for cutie, the strokes, radiohead...) i did a similar thing with the beatles. the beatles were the first band i ever liked, which got me into music. i listened to literally NOTHING ELSE for a year and a half, and then i got into U2 as well, though i didnt love them as much as i did the beatles. but because the beatles musical repitoire is static (and has been for years and years), i just...ran out of stuff to listen to. theres nothing else coming out (unless someone robs the vaults, which im all for :sneaky: ), theres no musical evolution going on beyond what has already happened. i didnt really realize it at the time, but i was growing tired of the beatles because i knew everything there was to know about them and had listened to every song they ever put out and ever would put out hundreds and hundreds of times. i only understood that i was tired of them once i discovered coldplay through the "speed of sound" music video in spring 2005. and while i still LOVE LOVE LOVE the beatles, i just...dont listen to them all that much anymore. coldplay usurped them as my favorite band because there was a whole new world of music and information to explore. i think this is part of what keeps me going with my coldplay love: the promise of more material in the future. if coldplay were to break up tomorrow (god, that scares me!), i think my passion would slowly begin to fade because i would have hit a dead end in the coldplay universe. i think as long as theyre creating new music in the years and decades to come, music that i really like and appreciate, then theyll never fall out of my top three bands. the beatles were a huge part of my life, just as coldplay are now, and i must say that im scared of losing my passion for them for this reason. im also scared that in the hiatus period between LPs 3 and 4, another band will slowly edge out coldplay as my #1 because coldplays taking too long to try and wow me again. i dont want this to happen without them getting another chance to knock my socks off like they did with parachutes and AROBTTH (which i discovered years after their initial releases...). this is why i want them to hurry the hell up with LP4, because i dont know how long my rabid love for them can hold out without new stuff to sink my teeth into. god i talk too much

Random Coldplay thoughts...
ooh, no way i could find that video again. i just tried and nothing. we werent on my computer, so i cant look it up. besides, it was just the two songs playing in the background; nothing exciting. it was just surprising to hear. i burned christmas CDs for all my friends this christmas, and the playlist is quite heavy on the chris martin, which i know will make all of them groan. but TOO BAD-- his voice is amazing and there are quite a few songs hes done that are either christmas themed ("have yourself a merry little christmas," "2000 miles") or work well on a christmas CD. so theyll just have to deal :sneaky:

Random Coldplay thoughts...
my friends and i were bored and came across a random video on youtube that's just a bunch of funny animal videos mashed together. but "speed of sound" and "talk" are the background songs! it was hilariously random, and i have no idea why those songs were there because they had nothing to do with anything, but it was still nice to hear.

The Buckland Religion~Official Thread
im a beatles freak--before i found coldplay, i would pretty much refuse to listen to anything else besides the beatles and U2. and yes, in 2003 paul mccartney had a daughter named beatrice, so you've had your namesake :laugh3:!

NEW STARS ON COLDPLAY.COM

HAHA  no, i didnt mean as common as mary! but like ava's now a really common and trendy name (at least around here it is), so i dont know, im thinking a name like that or something. something that people have heard before and dont think is too odd. haha, that would be pretty hilarious if they went that tradtional when all the others were a bit more unique!

i have no concrete info whatsoever to base this on, but ive got a feeling that jonny is a bit more of a traditional-name person. well, at least not as wacky as Apple or Moses!! oh, i bet that baby is adorable...
-
The Buckland Religion~Official Thread
yes, he will be very lucky!! wow, another girl! CONGRATS JONNY AND CHLOE!! :baby:  i'd kill to know the name...i wonder if jonny has as unique a taste in baby names as chris does!

What Else Do You Hear In the Coldplay Songs
yes, but dont you need an account or something for that? besides, i have an inhumanely slow internet connection, so it probably wouldnt work. in "have yourself a merry little christmas" you can hear the clicking of the piano keys as well. and since this is a thread about things we hear in coldplay songs and not just hidden studio noises... :sneaky: i personally think chris's best vocal work is on "shiver," and that even though he's an effing AMAZING vocalist on everything he does (especially AROBTTH tracks, IMO), i think he reaches this level or something in "shiver" that he never manages to completely return to in any other song. i can just feel the emotion and longing in his voice in that song, and his range is incredible. every time i hear it i can never get over his voice. i think its the epitome of his vocal work, which is semi sad because its so early in his career. though "GPASUYF" comes close, i think. and then "the scientist".

Will Coldplay ever play stadium again?
id kill to see them in an auditorium or something, like a secret show or whatever. i think theyd be INCREDIBLE. both venues i saw them in were on the small side for american venues (10,000 at mohegan sun, and though the dodge center can hold 25,000, it wasnt sold out when i saw them, so it was probably like 15,000 maybe). and they were great both times (especially the first one; it was their first stop in america), but nothing compared to the live 2003 DVD in my opinion. and ive been to a lot of concerts in my day and...guiltily enough, i must say that i dont think theyre nearly as good live as they are on record. at least not on a huge scale. however, if my dream of getting primo, front-row seats to a show on the next tour is fulfilled, i will probably never have another complaint about coldplay live again. and of course, seeing them live is such a dream that id take it in any venue in any condition any day :D

Have coldplay ever done drugs?
oh man. i clicked on this thread a few days ago worried that chris was like, caught using something hard or something like that. instead i had a good laugh. frankly, he just doesnt seem the type to me. not that i can say i really know him or anything, but he's crazy enough as he is! and then there's the "no hard drugs" band policy, which i think theyre probably all very serious about, and the fact that in an interview, chris stated that pot does nothing for him and he doesnt get the hype. actually, he said that chocolate does more for him. here's the exerpt: (from a july 2005 interview in rolling stone magazine; perhaps the best chris interview ever IMO)

Gwyneth...
saw a commercial for an estee lauder perfume today featuring gwyneth. this is probably old news (i searched for it and saw someone wrote something about it back in 2006...), but it surprised the crap out of me to see her in a perfume commercial. like she needs the money or something! beautiful ad, though!

Will Coldplay ever play stadium again?
^its hard to articulate what i mean by sound. but like, theyre just not...hard-rock enough to be enough of an act to fill a 20,000-seat stadium. U2, rolling stones, lots of other not-so-old and legendary bands legitimately fill the space. but lots of coldplays music seems too atmospheric and softish to really make a party for that many people. its so much more...intimate than that. i saw them twice in large stadiums, and i must say that compared to the live 2003 DVD (god how i wish i was a coldplay fan during the AROBTTH tour!), the guys, namely chris, seem to be trying a bit too hard to fill the huge space and electrify every person in the venue. chris's flailing and dancing is less of him getting caught up in the music and more of him trying to get everyone into it. the lights and fireworks and everything...theyre just not that kind of band, i think. theyre not flashy and show-offy...theyre intimate. by sound i didnt mean acutal noise, like sound waves or whatever, i meant style and band culture or whatever.

Random Coldplay thoughts...
i heard speed of sound come on the radio at work today. thats pretty unmiraculous in itself but the nurses keep the radio really quiet and i was across the room from it, and yet i could still tell exactly what song it was even though im hearing impaired! i also had a pretty bad day, so it was great to hear.
-
Will Coldplay ever play stadium again?
i completely agree. they tried a bit too hard to fill up all the extra space around them, and while the shows were good, they werent mind blowing in my opinion. theyre a mid-size venue band based on their sound. but i also kind of really hope that they keep playing such huge places because that makes it much easier for people to get tickets. i know that if they made this next tour a small-venue one and i was unable to get tickets because of that, i would totally freak. personally, i much rather see them (probably more than once, too!) being great than miss them being amazing. ill sacrifice a little intimacy for the chance of seeing them live in any venue.

What Else Do You Hear In the Coldplay Songs
i have no idea how to do that :\. im really really sorry! um maybe try searching in the multimedia section? how i wish this song was entirely theirs!! i love it to death; its in my top 10 coldplay songs of all time list even though its technically not theirs. its brilliant. god i love that song. two other things ive noticed: -in "see you soon" (my #1 coldplay song), you can hear chris's fingers sliding over the metal strings of the acoustic guitar, especially on the thick gauge of the thickest string. ive always liked that; it makes it even more intimate. -in "trouble" if you turn the volume WAY up in the chorus, the word "trouble" in the line "ahhh, i never meant to cause you trouble" echoes a bit so it turns into "trouble trouble-troub-tro...". for some inexplicable reason, i can hear this echo much much easier when im watching the UK version of the music video. all other times ive got to turn up the volume. and i always thought the noise in "we never change" was will rather than jonny, but who really knows? :D

Random Coldplay thoughts...
today i was flipping through an entertainment magazine and there was a blurb about actors that marry musicians. of course gwyneth and chris were featured. basically there was a tiny picture and it said theyd been married since 2003 and have 2 kids, but the gwyneth quote was rather disturbing: "if we decide to continue being together or not, its our business." im not jumping to any conclusions or anything, but i havent heard such a depressing quote from either of them on the subject before. on the brother front, he proceeded to tell me that every song on radiohead's "in rainbows" (which i also gave him) "totally suck," but he neglected to say anything about the coldplay tracks. which probably means he likes them :sneaky:

What Else Do You Hear In the Coldplay Songs
this one is completely obvious, but in the intro to "harmless," chris says "ill give it one more try i think" or something to that extent. also, the first time i listened to the instrumental version of "clocks" i noticed there's a stray (yet almost definitely intentional) twang of jonny's guitar right when chris sings the word "clocks." i never noticed that before i heard it in the intstrumental version! and i love love love the way chris breathes in "swallowed in the sea." it makes me feel like hes in the room with me or soemthing.

Random Coldplay thoughts...
my brother just came into my room shyly and said "i need some music." i said "what kind of music?" and he looked all embarrassed and said "ok, you can't tell anyone, this cant get out." and i got all excited and said "YOU WANT SOME COLDPLAY MUSIC, DON'T YOU?!" he did! he asked for all of AROBTTH, "fix you," and "shiver." so i cant tell his friends because "coldplay is for homos" according to him, but it made my day. HAHAHAHA, we may soon have a new coldplay convert. i think this sudden interest is from forcing him to listen to coldplay in my car the other day. i should drive him around more often!

Sun's Bizarre Boss Receives Colourful Goodbyes From Coldplay
ahh, thats SO adorable! i love chris's drawings! they make me so happy. i like the use of color in this one, and the incorporation of chris's new haircut. though what's with chris's hat?? ps- buffymaniac: do you have the full-size picture of the photo in your avatar? ive never seen it before and would love to have it!

Gwyneth...
i thought the same exact thing and got quite worried. i think that was the point though :D

What Else Do You Hear In the Coldplay Songs
i think its almost definitely multi-tracked. to my knowledge, most everything is! :) maybe im naive, but why the hell would they get a studio musician to play the maracas? i thought studio musicians were only brought in when the band couldnt play the instruments, like strings or whatever. this is slightly off-topic, but ive always thought chris sounded very slightly congested on the album versions of "a message" and "swallowed in the sea."
