  1. Nice! 1984 is one of my favourite books. One Hundred Years of Solitude is on my to read list.
  2. Thanks a lot for the review, JillyBlue! Really liked your way of organising and writing up the review!
  3. August (About to explode – but not just yet) As far as Atlas was concerned, August was a month of highs and lows for Coldplayers, as the song was announced, only to have its release date delayed in a few days. As we will see tomorrow though, excitement reached a new high when the song was finally released. But before we get to that, let us remember some events in August. Tinie Tempah on receiving music advice from Chris Martin When GQ (August 7th interview) asked him why there was a three-year gap between his last two albums, Tinie Tempah said he got the idea from our own Chris Martin: Well, that might explain some things in Coldplay too… (:P) Guy featuring in a Hudson Hank video (+ two CM tweets) On August 15th, the band Hudson Hank uploaded a video into their YouTube channel featuring Guy Berryman. Guy produced the band’s debut album, DayBreak, which would be released a month later. Watch Guy talking to Sam Oats, Hudson Hank’s songwriter and arranger: [ame]www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7BmHID4R6k[/ame] While we’re on the music zone, two August tweets worth mentioning are those below, in which CM shared his latest favourites at that point: Happy birthday, Phil! Just as July wraps up in festive fashion with Will’s birthday, August comes to an end in great style by celebrating Phil Harvey’s birthday. I’ll carry your world: Coldplay announce Atlas But we certainly couldn’t finish an August review without going through the major event of the month, the announcement that Coldplay were to feature in the Catching Fire soundtrack. On August 9th, it was announced via twitter and Coldplay.com that the band would release Atlas on August 26th as part of the OST of the second part of The Hunger Games series. A bit earlier that day, CM tweeted the handwritten lyrics of the song: Without a new release since Mylo Xyloto came out around two years ago, the news of a fresh song was undoubtedly very well received within the fanbase. Relive the discussion here. In the same extent, expectations were high among the people involved in the film production. Francis Lawrence, Catching Fire’s director commented: Tracy McKnight, Head of Film Music at Lionsgate, the entertainment company behind the movie: However, on August 22nd, a few days prior to Atlas release, initially set at August 26th, it was announced via twitter that the release would actually be delayed until September 6th – 8th in the UK. It goes without saying that the original excitement of the first announcemente was replaced by overall disappointement. Nevertheless, August 26th wasn’t an entirely uneventful day, for the cover art for Atlas was unveiled (x): All in all, August was quite an exciting month for us Coldplayers, given the prospect of hearing a brand new song from our favourite band after so much time without a new release. Due to the reschedule though we could only know whether or not these expectations were fulfilled in September, when Atlas finally saw the light of day.
  4. The end of the mini-episode-thingy
  5. Oh, damn, I forgot to correct the title of the thread to "in which Bakery discussions get rather hot". Could it be done, please? One day, I'll do reviews without making any silly mistake, but not today :P/:disappointed:
  6. July (in which Bakery discussions get rather hot) Continuing March's full month of charity work, in July, Chris took part in two charitable events. July is also the birthday month of our dear Will. In 2013, this month also saw the celebration of Parachutes’ 13th birthday. The highlight of the month though was Bakery-related discussion and visiting reports. A Curious Night at the Theatre (July 1st) Keeping the band’s long-term involvement in charity work, July kicked off by Chris taking part in the fundraising gala A Curious Night at the Theatre, an event organized by the English actor Luke Treadaway and director Katy Rudd, along with the The National Autistic Society and Ambitious about Autism. The name of the event, which took place in July 1st, is a nod at the stage adaptation of the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Written by Mark Haddon, the novel, among other things, references various forms of autism. The night centered on a new version of the play, but also included stand-up comedy and musical acts. The latter group was joined by Chris, a surprise guest. He was reported as having played acoustic and un-miked renditions of Viva La Vida and Paradise. He also donated £10,000 to the event, which raised over £100,000 for the aforementioned organisations. Chris’ performance was described as follows (x): Check more reports and photos at the main site and at the forum. Whizz-Kidz Awards (July 10th) Whizz-Kidz is a “UK charity that supports young disabled people with mobility equipment, life skills and campaigning and leadership tools” (x). In July 10th, the organisation held its annual edition of The Kidz Unlimited Celebrating Achievement Awards, which “celebrates the achievements of young disabled people across the UK” (x). Chris participated in the event by presenting Conor McKenna with the Inspirational Young Person award, a category that acknowledges commitment and contribution to Whizz-Kidz. Chris expressed his delight in being able to take part in the event (x): Commenting on Chris’ participation, Ruth Owen, Whizz-Kidz’s Chief Executive, said: Later on that day, Phil also commented the event via Twitter: See the full discussion at the main site and at the forum. Bakery pilgrimage discussion Ever since the band studion location was discovered, fans have been regularly visiting it, hoping to meet the band there or, at the very least, to get to know the place “where the magic happens”. In July (continuing the pattern already present in "]June), one of the Coldplayers who visited the Bakery was mayurshikotra, who brought back some news on the progress of the recording of what is to the band’s sixth album. He reported his meet-up with Will as follows: (Check his full report and photos here. Photos from other July Bakery meet-ups are linked here.) After the end of their MX tour, the band had been spending a lot of time at their headquarters. No wonder then that we witnessed an increase in the visits to the Bakery and the Beehive (to mention only those places and to mention only actual visits…). This triggered the discussion forum as to whether or not the fan-visiting was getting rather excessive. Under this general theme, various discussion threads emerged. Some of our Coldplaying fellow members emphasised the importance of raising awareness to the issue, while others doubted that abstract discussion could cause any change in the actual behaviour of Bakery visitors. Still others argue that Coldplay fans that visited the studios were friendly and respectful, so that the increase in Bakery and Beehive traffic wasn’t cause for concern. A variation of this idea was that Coldplay members, when meeting fans didn’t seem to mind it. As a matter of fact, the band were thought to be quite happy during the encounters. The conclusion drawn from this was that the visits weren’t threatening to get out of hand. On the other hand, it was underlined that the band’s politeness and consideration couldn’t really be taken as a necessary sign that some lines hadn’t been crossed. In the same extent, it was pointed out that some fans were indeed going many extra miles by waiting for the band for many hours at their workplace and/or by going there repeatedly. Although the discussion hasn’t reached a proper conclusion, the poll results suggest that most of Coldplaying members think that it’s advisable to take a step back when deciding to visit the Bakery and Beehive and attempt not to disturb the band, even though they might not seem to mind it. Double birthday: Will and Parachutes To round things off, July saw the celebration of two birthdays. It goes without saying that in July 31st, our favourite drummer-multi-instrumentalist-all around talented-bright-lovely Will Champion completed 35 years old. Prior to that, on July 10th, Coldplayers celebrated the 13th anniversary of Parachutes (x), Coldplay’s debut album and a definite fan-favourite. In a nutshell, there were some worth-mentioning events in July 2013, most notably, the debate on fan behaviour regarding visiting Coldplay's workplaces, the importance of which is highlighted when we consider that the pilgrimage doesn't show any sign of abating.
  7. It'd be for the review only, yes, as I doubt I'll post tweets here frequently. I'll just copy the content in the reviews. Thank you, anyway!
  8. Oh, a lot of nice events in June! Thank you for the review, Arantza! Very well organised and fun to read (and reminisce) :nice:
  9. Thanks for the review, Ian! What lovely things Meighan said :nice:
  10. Very nicely written and entertaining to read! Well done and thank, you Céline :)
  11. Also, how do I embed tweets in a post? If it's too much trouble, I'll just copy the content. Thanks =)
  12. I'd like to do July too, if that's ok :) Edit: I should've waited, but July's review is almost finished.
  13. Thanks for the review, Macky :) Such a nice month of charity work!
  14. I thought it better not to open a new thread, but how do I embed a tweet in a post, rather than just copying its content? I'd like to use this in the review. Thanks in advance and sorry if there's already a thread about that I didn't find :)
  15. Still trying to finish Death in Venice, but reading Frankestein (Mary Shelley) at the same time.
  16. Anyone up to do January's review? It's just a couple of days away :/
  17. Struggling through Death in Venice (Thomas Mann). I'm most likely too dumb to read this - although, that's one of the purposes in the first place, to be less dumb.
  18. I've been rather absent this year, but if this isn't a major impediment, I'd like to do August, please :) And for what is worth, doing reviews is great. You get to remember events, pay attention to details you missed and it's fun to organise it into a text. It doesn't take a ginormous amount of time. Do volunteer, please :nice:
  19. Darn, the latest trailer :bomb: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UcR9iKArd0]Sherlock: Series 3 Launch Trailer - BBC One - YouTube[/ame] (Link to interactive trailer in the description)
  20. Well, just in case anyone was thinking this was a real photo: Same handshape. Chris' head was just photoshopped in and the photo was made to look older. /incredibly relevant post
  21. Sobrevivente (original title: Survivor), by Chuck Palahniuk. Very interesting format. This promises to be another 'punch right onto your stomach' kind of book.
