I learn much more writing papers. With multiple choice tests a lot of people binge on the study guide the day before, vomit the answers on the paper and hardly remember anything after they leave. I find that thinking critically about the details event helps you retain more information than just memorizing terms and names. Obviously this isn't applicable across the board. A multiple choice math question is completely different from a history question.
