Good pics of Jonny's new Rig!
" Guess I just gotta try stuff out and see for myself." That really is the key. Nobody can really tell what's best for you and your situation. It's what sounds good to your ears...

Good pics of Jonny's new Rig!
"I'm not too sure what I ought to get to achieve a similar type of Buckland sound though" I'd suggest starting with a Line 6 Multi-FX unit, or perhaps a few Boss Pedals. Most of Jon's pedals in this rig are super high end professional quality stuff. You can get the basic delay/reverb sound pretty well out of a multi FX (like the POD pro).

"10000000000x better than stock Epiphone hummbuckers." Yep, Epi Humbuckers are awful. However, some of the newer models use actual Gibson Pickups (the higher end ones often even use Gibson Burstbuckers), so before you swap them out, make sure your's doesn't have the good ones.

"Can I ask you guys, I've been thinking of getting another guitar and was thinking about maybe getting one of the artist models, do you think I should or just get something else and customize it?." Well, knowing you're partial to Strats, I will say that some of the Fender "Artist" Strats are IMHO very well made. Both the Eric Johnson and Buddy Guy Strats Absolutely smoke in their stock condition (with the usual bit about most new guitars still needing a good set up.) Personally though, I really like the Joe Strummer Tele. They really balance authentic look and detailing with a superior quality playing guitar. Plus it looks cooler than all... Also, last week I was in my local shop looking around for a new guitar, and I was really impressed by the Epiphone copy of the Joe Perry Les Paul. For an Epiphone, it was super high quality (though I've also heard people say the Gibson version is one of the best guitars they make.) Plus, the one I played was exceptionally light for a Les Paul. I'm seriously considering getting it, and I've always really been a Fender player.

Coldplay sound effect help
For the newer live performances, he seems to be relying(sp?) heavily on rack units, which in general, make deep layering of multiple effects easier than with pedals. I the LiJ uses the Eventide processor quite heavily, but am not certain of that. EDIT: The sound you want from the video, is as Bearcat said, most likely either synth or MIDI. the only thing I know of that sounds like that, (and is relatively readily available), are some of the Line 6 units. They're expensive, but anything else that can create that kind of echo-y sustain is probably in the realm of very high end professional gear. If you're really desperate to create such a sound on the cheap, you can try playing around with a tape delay (or modeler of one) to get a speeded up heavy delay and sustain combo. Of course, that won't really be cheap either and it won't sound exactly like what you want.

"Edge has a lot of duplicates in his collection" One of the big reasons he takes so many guitars on the road is that every single guitar in his live rig has it's own dedicated backup. A lot of professional players like to amass duplicates. If you find a vintage instrument you like (and you've got the money), it makes sense to grab as many as you can, in case anything happens to them. Case in point, I read somewhere that U2 lost a lot of their instruments when their studio flooded in 2002.

"As I've stated before I'm not at all a fan of Coldplays music but after reading up on Jons effects on here I don't think his are particularly complicated" With his old effects set up, I'd agree. However, his new rig on the VLV tour is pretty complex. Not the most complex I've ever seen by any means though...

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"good point, though it felt like we were more discussing the discision lately...." In a sense we have, but given that the discussion itself seems to have generated even more intense debate than the initial issue, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.

"One day I'll have a huge rig.....hopefully. And like 42 guitars....on tour. I'd love to see hsi guitar room at home" This photo of Edge in his guitar storage room in U2's Hanover Quay complex was from Q's "guitar heros" issue which profiled Edge In the article that went with it, U2, equipment manager estimated Edge had around 250 guitars in the studio:laugh3:

Obscure Parachutes era question...
Shrunk down, it really did look like metal wearing through the finish. And the glare makes the pickguard look metal as well.:laugh3:

"Im not too knowlageable in effects. So I'll have them all!" I see being a fan of The Edge extends to your adopting his effects philosophy!:laugh3:

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"they live the venue immediately after the escapist" While the running time being too short may be a matter of opinion. The statement that there is no encore is just not true. Everything after the acoustic set is the encore, why some people do not pick up on this, I have no clue... It is true, that they rarely do additional unplanned encore's, but I'm hardpressed to think of very many bands today that do (including among bands who's live performances are regarded as superior to those of Coldplay.)

If I could have any pedal I'd want either a Lovetone Ring Stinger or a Sobbat DB1...

Obscure Parachutes era question...
I figured it out! It was the same blue Tele that was his main guitar. In this particular photo, smudges and fingerprints on it caught the light in such a way that it made it look like streaks in the finish. Blown up to large size (I only ever saw it as a thumbnail) they don't even look silver, or even that obvious...

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"How do we know they reduced them because people on here were complaining?" I'm assuming we're talking about the Latin American Tour here? If not, I don't get it because tickets are much higher for this tour than they were for Twisted Logic (though still on the low end of what major concerts run these days.) I always assumed that the prices for the Latin American tour were high due to a combination of a low number of shows and the fact that the shows wre smaller theatre shows. Not sure this is the best example to "prove" posting here reaches the band... "Chris has mentioned it in an interview that they check out the messageboards and press from time to time. And any good manager would always be checking on band feedback. Let me put it this way, if you had a messageboard about you and your career, life wouldn't you want to take a look at it every now and then????" I'm sure someone in the band's organization does take the time to look at what's being written about them. However, I'd be willing to bet that most of this research is done with reviews, commentary etc. published in proffessional sources (Newspaper reviews, NME etc.). A band as big as Coldplay have literally thousands of websites, messageboards, and chatrooms devoted to them, even if the band or their people were looking (and again I'm not sure they are), the chances they'd find this particular thread on this particular board are extremely slim. Also, to my knowledge, the comment of Chris', you refrenced was about the old Coldplay.com message system (which I don't believe even exists anymore.), and even if it wasn't, he probably meant he'd seen a few websites once or twice. As someone else said, the length of Coldplay's sets has been an ongoing complaint at least since 2005, if the band were inclined to play longer in response to this complaint, it seems they would have done so already. And who exactly is trying to stiffle debate? One person posted about the thread being too far up, and three people posted in defense of the debate on this thread.

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"There are so many people willing to state an opinion without explaining, it make a refreshing change to see a thread where people are willing to discuss like this. I like to know why people think the way they do, whichever opinion they may have." Exactly. So many post have been made about complaints with the VLV shows, but a large percentage of them are little better than trolling, with comments phrased in a rude and agressive manner and no explination. It's nice to have at least one thread where people seem to want to discuss why the feel the way they do with each other. Otherwise, what's the point of posting here at all? Besides, new people are voting in the poll, and that alone is enough to keep the thread at the top anyway (is it? I could be wrong on that...)

Obscure Parachutes era question...
Thanks. I wish I could find the one I'm thinking of though. It's very distinctive, but I've not seen this particular guitar outside of that one picture.

Obscure Parachutes era question...
I'm helping a friend compile information on Jon's gear for a guitar website we're trying to get together. I think I've got it pretty much covered except for one thing- During the Parachutes era, I know, Jon's main guitar was a blue telecaster JD, but did he also play another Tele live. I seem to remember a live picture of him with a different Tele (perhaps a backup). It was also blue, but alo had large silvery splotches on it. I think it was in the live photo section here, but can't find it now... I know it's a really obscure question, but we really wnat our archive to be as complete as possible...

I thought it sounded alright. It doesn't have too sound exactly like the original to be a good cover...:smug:

Boston - Gilette Stadium show...
Makes more sense as an indoor show anyway... I think the added dates have a lot to do with the fact that the whole resheduling fiasco meant that many markets that probably would have had 2nd shows added had to make do with one.

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"can't we just let this thread move onto page two clearly nobody's going to agree with eachother..." Well, it's pretty clear we're not going to agree, but IMHO some interesting points have been raised, which does kind of make the thread interesting. (to me anyway...)

[11 August 2008] Four US shows announced...
"and to fakfak... i don't care if they play the same set or not because i'm excited to see them again REGUARDLESS. i just feel like it would be weird as a band to go into the same building about 3 months after you played there before and put on basically the same show. again whatever they do is fine with me but i'd imagine there will at least be a FEW set changes." Hopefully there will be some changes, I'm just saying it wouldn't shock me if there were not, based on what Coldplay has done in the past. It's not an issue for me, because if the set's good, I don't mind seeing it multiple times live; but, it seems to be an issue for a lot of people on these boards.

[11 August 2008] Four US shows announced...
"It's great that they've added more shows, but why in the exact same cities they've already performed or were already scheduled to perform in??" I think it's probably mostly to do with what fits their touring schedule. They've got to play places they can easily get to (band, crew, and gear) from other places their playing. Perhaps few other markets make sense geographically(sp?), within the framework of the already scheduled dates? "idk i just can't seem them going to these places for the second time and bringing the same exact show..." Why not, they have before. IMHO anyone who goes a 2nd time expecting more than a slightly different set (if different at all), is setting themselves up for disappointment. It would be cool (and IMHO they really ought to), but I wouldn't get my hopes up...

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
My SAT worthy analysis of that post::P "you really ought to stop analyzing others' posts piece by piece, as if it's some sort of SAT question. some people are let down by the length of the show and the breadth of the songs, which takes away the fun of multiple concert " I totally get all that, however, discussion, debate, and responding to others opinions are what these boards exist for. If you don't want to hear what others have to say, why are you here? "coldplay is one of the biggest if not the biggest band right now, not some young inexperienced band experiencing massive attention all of a sudden. like what jonny said in one interview, they've been around for more than 10 years, although age wise they are still considered 'young'. if you've been to concerts by bands as acclaimed as coldplay, you'd know where the complaints are coming from" Yes, because Coldplay would be the ONLY band in history who's popularity exceeded their ability, and who had a degree of trouble living up to said popularity, right? I've been to dozens of live concerts (from small club bands to veteran stadium headliners.), and yes a lot of bands are better than Coldplay live, but, a lot of bands, even "acclaimed" ones are worse, in some cases much worse. "some people are so blinded by their love for the band that they try to make the lamest excuses i.e. "they are tired", "they are young band". don't get so defensive, this is just an online forum where fans express their opinions" Yes, and if you actually READ the post of mine you critisized, you'd see I in no way support making excuses for flaws in the band's shows, or defending the band against even justified critisism. As long as you remain civil while expressing your opinion, and respect other's opinions which differ from your own, I personally have no problem with you (or anyone else) posting a critical review. "it's a bit silly of you to think people who express disappointments are doing so in the hopes of getting their voices heard to the band" Considering that multiple people have stated that this was their intention in posting critisism, I don't think it's silly at all. Unless of course, we're talking about the likelyhood such a tactic will actually work, which IMHO IS "a bit silly"... "it's called a discussion, so relax buddy" Which, again, is why I'm "discussing" what others have said. That's what a discussion is, if nobody responds to anybody else, that's not a discussion. My previous long post was part of an ongoing discussion with another poster. I posted my thoughts, they posted a response to that post, and I was attempting to respond to points they raised. That's what people do here. Hope this is good enough to get me into Yale...:laugh3:

09-Aug-08: Osaka - Tickets, Preview, Meetups, Review/Photos
"Could be. THeir set was one of the first sets at River Rave, and they only played I think 7 songs since they were total unknowns with one hit back then, lol. They literally almost quit that day from the audience abuse. It's kind of a cool story, and the bootleg that goes with it is somewhere in MM." Well, I think most of the abuse is probably due to the fact that Coldplay was mis-booked for that show. Looking at the festival lineup, it's pretty clear Coldplay (softer, quieter, less famous, Parachutes era Coldplay no less), is about the last band I'd book to open for those others...
