"Agreed about the black Crowes. Not so great anymore." The 2005 Reunion tour was the high point for me, but I also saw them in 2001 when they toured with Oasis and Spacehog and that had to be one of the flat out best gigs I've ever seen.

Let me rephrase, They are a GREAT live band, but not by any means the GREATEST live band I've seen. My Top Live Bands: 1. U2 2. Muse 3. The White Stripes 4. Radiohead 5. The Black Crowes (only when Marc Ford was in the lineup)

That is a 1968 Rickenbacker 360F (the Ric F series stands for full body, there's a coresponding F series model for all the 300 series Ric's). They were made from 1958-1973 and are extremely rare today.

My only point was that maybe the reason why they don't measure up to some other bands, is that they are not as good as those other bands. Stop thinking of Coldplay as "the next u2" and most of ther issues people have will be gone.

At the risk of being slaughtered by a lot of you guys, I think it comes down to one simple thing: Coldplay ARE NOT a great live band Coldplay ARE a good live band They will never (IMHO) be as good as U2 or Radiohead live, but they are really enjoyable if you take them on their own terms. It's funny to me that their detractors always say Coldplay aren't as good as "this or that other band", yet turn around and b^%ch when they aren't as good as those same bands live. That logic just doesn't make sense...:dozey:

What do you think about the running time of "Viva La Vida" tour concerts???
"I don't need a big stage, I don't need butterflies coming from above, I don't need a big screen at the background... I just want to see them live and listen to their music! I think this is the most important thing at a concert. They should rather minimize the things mentioned above and play some more songs, especially from Parachutes. People would be more content with the show then IMO." I think you underestimate the number of people who do want "just the hits" lasers and Confetti. People who take the time to post here, are people who follow the band enough to take the time to do so. Coldplay's live audience these days is composed mostly of people who are casual fans, and those are who they are playing to now, for better or worse. Regarding Pemberton, that may be the one legitimate instance on this tour when they played a short set, as they literally played that night until the safety authorities made them quit.

Viva La Vida Tour - Disapointing Set Lists
Some thoughts on this whole debate (PlEASE keep in mind that all of the following are only my opinions and I don't mean to assert they are the only correct opinions or to offend anyone with differing opinions) I saw the band both nights in Chicago and they WERE polished and tight IMHO. That said, I've always found Coldplay to be just a bit sloppy in terms of live performance, to me, the mistakes and goofs they made when I saw them were nothing out of the ordinary for this band. With that said, I would contend that ANY band no matter how great will always sound rougher at the start of a tour than they will once they've had time to "get in the groove" of live performance. Set length, I find Coldplay's set's to be toward the short end of what I consider acceptable for a major headlining act. They could play a bit longer, but they don't. I don't see that changing, would be nice if it did, but probably won't. Set itself, Yeah the show is roughly the same everynight but that's what a huge arena show is. DMB, mixes their sets up as much as they do because a HUGE perportion of their audience wants to hear b-sides, rareties, etc. With Coldplay the situation is the exact opposite, the majority of their fans go to hear the radio hits and will see the show once (or perhaps a few times per tour). Coldplay don't Have the kind of audience DMB of BRMC have and their shows reflect that. Mind you, I'm not saying a lot of CP fans don't want to hear the more obscure songs, but I'm affraid you're in the minority as far as ths band's fans go. Just look at how many people at the concerts sing along to the radio hits yet stare blankly whenever the band try to play a less well known song. I agree that Coldplay is not the best live show in rock (and IMHO will likely never be.), but they are, for me worth the money to see live, for you they may not be. That's cool. It's subjective, based on opinion and what the show is worth to you. There's no way to be objective about it. Coldplay does what they do, if that's not to your tastes, your money is probably better spent on some other band you can enjoy, as Coldplay probably won't change anytime soon. (if they ever do at all.) As a last bit, I think the Parachutes material is being somewhat disregarded because it doesn't fit the show. Most of the songs are quieter and slower and would not fit in between the more "crowd pleasing" numbers from the newer records.

"Hartford did not get an encore, they got the same setlist as Toronto and DC" Just to clear things up, everthing after the acoustic set is intended to be the encore. At the Chicago shows, Chris said something to this effect, at other shows he may not have. So if anything the band needs to be clearer about the end of the main set/start of the encore as people are appearently getting confused. However, many of the earlier shows did get an added 2nd encore, my guess is this was stopped due to Chris' cold. Perhaps when he recovers fully, it will be added back in. As for people sitting, that's just part of a big arena show. With a crowd that large, a large percentage of the audience will always be casual fans of the band who will not show the same enthousiasm(sp) as the more dedicated fans (which is what anybody posting here probably is.) AND BTW-Gretchen, Busybee Burns is NOT the author of the original post, It's an article from a newspaper in Hartford which in his capacity as Mod he posted here (as he does with all CP related articles positive or negative) If you have a problem with said article, take it up with the author, not the board mod who is just trying to post imformation of interest to those who follow the band, which is what this site exists for in the first place.

"I think if I ever got a '54 though I wouldn't ever take it anywhere for fear of something happening to it" I know a few people who saved up for their dream instrument (in one case literally for several years) only to be to affraid to gig with it, or even play it at home. IMHO, if you're not going to play it, you're wasting your money...

Perhaps, I'm not getting something, but what exactly about the encore bothered some people. Can someone on that side of the debate explain it to me?

Small Reminders/Updates & The Coldplay Messenger (feat. Roadie #42!)
I think Jonny and his partner have (or did have) a place in New York as well, but as far as I know, both Guy and Will still live full time in London.

Unlike other major Guitar brands (namely Gibson and Fender), All Rickenbacker Guitars are still essentially made by hand with very little automation. As a logical extension of this, most of Rickenbacker's resources go into 360's and 330's (which are what most people want in a Ric). Less popular models, unfourtunately suffer the brunt of this slow but high quality production method. (Incidently, the wait list for a Ric Acoustic is approx 5-8 years...) The one I want:

"I would love a '54 Strat" Who wouldn't!:laugh3: Though if I had my choice of any guitar, it would be a '68 SG... (or a Rickenbacker 360F, but there are supossedly only a few hundred of them left in the world.)

"I'm sure Yellow is beat to death in Chris' mind, certainly Scientist or Clocks could be modified to be better than the recording, but the crowd won't allow it to happen. I mean, it was a great terrific show, despite the lack of an encore, I do think if the crowd backed off a little, it could be even better. Thoughts?" I agree. However, I would contend the band are already doing this to some degree. They've left out radio hits like Talk and Shiver for (presumably for them) more interesting material from the new album. Also, I don't really get how the new version of GPASOYF, the acoustic version of Yellow or the Scientist, don't qualify as modified. With a band this popular playing gigs this big, there will always be fans who just want to sing along to the hits, but it seems to me with this current tour, the band are much more comfortable in their own skin and are playing what they want.

"In the parking lot before the concert they somehow convinced her to take some vodka shots (she's a straight A student, my age who doesn't drink). During the concert she get's sick, passes out in the bathroom and is eventually picked up by paramedics and sent to the hospital. While this is going on her "date" doesn't even leave the concert and my sister has to pick her up at the hospital. " How awful that story is! Still, it's fortunate somebody got to her in time to give her some kind of help. Stories that start like that often end up a lot worse... Sounds like the bus ride back to NYC was "interesting" as well. Sounds like you're lucky your Greyhound weirdos were only annoying and not homicidal like that one in Winnipeg last week. (that was some messed up s$%t!) ...On that uplifting note, I'm going to bed.

That's nothing. The local guitar shop by me had a 1965 Fender P-Bass in a Red Sparkle finish (supposedly it's a rare trade show bass that was never mass produced.) When I was in the other day, some guy was buying it for $25,000! Vintage guitars are expensive, even Vintage Thinlines like Jonny plays cost upward of $5000

"The '70 basses are not on the Fender site and I think that they're rare" Fender doesn't sell vintage instruments themselves. You have to buy them secondhand. I think the going rate for a vintage 70's P-Bass is about $5000-6000 U.S.

"Well that girl playing would have been awful no matter what. It was cheap, pointless pop/rap and I was suffering thru about 6 or 7 songs of it" Fair enough. My only point was taste being subjective, Santogold fans are not likely to be Coldplay fans and vice versa. Coldplay could (and IMHO should), remedy this by picking opening bands more similar in style to themselves (as most bands do). For example, I'd kill to see Your Vegas and Coldplay on the same bill. "As for the encore, I understand about all that, I just dont get why they couldnt have just run off stage of Lovers in Japan and back on for DAAHF. It would have been the same number of songs, but it would have been more fun. I just wish theyd humored us. " Again, fair enough. My own opinions an the uselessness and stupidity of leaving the stage before returning to play song's you planned to play have been well documented in other posts, so I'll not rehash them here. However, you are absolutely entitled to be upset if the band didn't meet your expectations in a live gig. I was merely trying to point out an important bit of info that seems to often get lost in the developing "no encore" debate.

Comments on Openers and "no encores" On Openers: "That Santogold chick or whatever her name was...yes she was VERY annoying. I was bopping my head to the music, but I think it was honestly because i am very sleep deprieved and if I didn't otherwise, I would have fell asleep." I think the perceived lack of quality of Coldplay's opener's is due to two factors: 1. They tend to pick acts which differ a great deal in style from their own music, are considerably less mainstream then them, or who are in general not well known. This creates a situation wherwe said opener is not to the taste of a great deal of Coldplay's live audience. 2. Related to the above, most of these acts don't have a sound that works well in arenas. Personally, I like Santogold, but that music is better played in a smaller space. ON "no encores" I've been puzzling over this since it first popped up on the 2nd night Toronto thread. This morning however, I was finally able to contact some friends who were at that show and after hearing a detailed description of the set, I think I get it now. The band is playing virtually the same 20 song set (notwithstanding the changes) that it has since the beggining of this tour leg. Even if they are not leaving the stage, the show was always structured as 19 songs with DAAHF as the lone encore. The addition of green eyes and the new song were an added 2nd encore for some shows which has now seemingly been dropped. Mind you, I'm not saying you don't have the right to be mad at Coldplay for suspending the 2nd encore if you feel that way, but I do think it's important to note that they're not playing less songs now than they did the first night of the tour in L.A.

Agreed. Not sure about prices outside the U.S., but I've been looking around, and the Squier Thinlines are high end for Squier, while the Fender MIM thinlines are relatively cheap within Fender's price structure. With the discounts offered on MRSP by a lot of dealers, the price difference would probably end up very small.

What does Chris use for distortion
In the old days Chris used a Fender Twin. Now (at least before the current tour) he also uses a hotrod 2x12. (Jon has 2 onstage and a 3rd hidden for FOH refrence tone). When I saw them in Chicago, there was what looked to be an Orange Cab next to the television set at the back of the stage so perhaps chris uses them now...
