  1. Emma Watson has bad posture and her looks are very generic. I could also walk down the high street in Guildford and point out 10 girls who would be more attractive than her. Oh, and she's the weakest of the main actors.
  2. Strauss deserved the man of the match award, but I won't begrudge Flintoff for robbing him of it. There's a 10 day break before Edgbaston, plenty of time for Hughes to tighten his technique against the short ball, and for Johnson to find some confidence/rhythm. I still think Australia will retain the Ashes.
  3. I liked his poem in A Bit of Fry and Laurie: Underneath the bellied skies Where dust and rain find space to fall To fall and lie and change again Without a care or mind at all For art and life and things above In that there look just there No right left up down past or future We have but ourselves to fear.
  4. I think young people are increasingly polarized between self love and self loathing, and neither is necessarily healthy for a successful relationship. I freely admit that I am somewhat narcissistic, but the main reason for my being single is likely down to time constraints. I work 9-5+ commuting to central London, while studying for an ACCA qualification. More often than not, relationships are hard work and a successful one hinges on mutual understanding and acceptance. But to reach this shangri-la requires considerable time investment. I would postulate that twentysomethings lead significantly busier lives than ever before and, like myself, are less able to fit a relationship around their schedule, nevermind make it work.
  5. Isn't it obvious? Intelligent people tend to ask questions rather than simply accept things as given, and they look for objective answers with evidence backed by logical reasoning. Since religions are primarily founded on a leap of faith, such people are more likely to reject the idea. "Intelligent people are less likely to do [anything irrational]" would be equally accurate as a brief, but of course the hypothesis goes for the controversy jugular by mentioning religion. This seems like second rate "research" by social "scientists" to me.
  6. The unions are still intact, therefore the fundamental problem with GM has been ignored.
  7. Well... the cupboard is pretty bare at the moment. The XI that played in Cardiff is close to the best possible team we can field. Monty will be dropped for either Harmison or Onions for a bouncy Lord's wicket, and Broad may be (harshly) axed too. However, I don't see any batsman getting the boot after one match, especially when the best of the rest is Ian-serial-underachiever-Bell. I think the first test played more or less as expected; both attacks struggled to take wickets and the superior Australian batting nearly proved the difference. The worrying thing is just how toothless our bowling was. Before the match, I would have confidentally claimed that a pace trio of Flintoff/Anderson/Broad is as threatening as any in world cricket today, but they were all made to look very ordinary. Swann expectedly found it tough against quality opposition, but a combined haul of 1 wicket between him and Panesar is embaressing; especially in comparison to Hauritz, who nobody (except Ponting) rated. We haven't defeated the Aussies in a test match at Lord's since 1934, and I don't expect that to change. However, I do expect a better showing from England, and it will most likely end in a (hopefully exciting) draw.
  8. Men against boys. Katich and Ponting gave a classy lesson to our impatient and wreckless batsmen about how to bat on a slow flat pitch. I think we have a better attack in Flintoff/Anderson/Broad backed by acceptable spinners, but the Aussie batting lineup is just so strong... With Brett Lee injured, both sides will have to work to take 20 wickets in a match. My money would be on 2-1 to Australia.
  9. What is with the 324561 cuts every second... as if the camera work is not jerky enough.
  10. I call shenanigans. Lewis did nothing wrong, how did he gain an advantage by being right on Kimi's gearbox when before the incident, he was already there? He overtook Kimi because the McLaren is simply faster in the rain. Whatever you think of Lewis' character is irrelevant, he nursed it home on a damp track and was the better driver on the day. The FIA ruling is an appalling misjudgement and ruined one of the most exciting finishes to a Grand Prix ever. Kimi's championship is over, Ferrari will go all out for Massa now.

  13. Lovefool Kipling wrote that a man must be Willing to gamble for victory And if fortune should pass him by Never look back nor bat an eye On principle I must disagree I do not trust Lady Luck you see Too often have I let her choose Whether I win or whether I lose I'm understating when I say I've not always had it my way Fickle a mistress she must be In my time of need, to mutiny Which is why today, I must act Make with the devil a Faustian Pact Before Lady Luck rolls a die Before you blink and pass me by Convince myself it's a one way bet Better to know than to regret Trust Erasmus and play it cool Trust that "fortune favours the fool" - Summer 2008
  14. Nobody else will fuse intelligent writing with potty jokes in such convincing fashion ever again... Throw in some legendary performances and fantastic on screen chemistry, and Blackadder is a unique triumph in British television history. In my opinion, the show improved with every series, ending with the most brilliant moment of dramatic irony: Captain Darling: I say, listen - our guns have stopped. Lieutenant George: You don't think... Private Baldrick: Perhaps the war's over. Perhaps it's peace. Captain Darling: Thank God. We lived through it. The Great War, 1914 to 1917. *Cue collective groan from the audience* Youtube link

  17. Because people in the developed world have too much spare time, too much money, and not nearly enough sense.
  18. Some people really will fall for anything as long as it says "Coldplay" on it. The power of the song is wasted on such pedestrian efforts. The iTunes advert trumps the insipid Hype version for emotion, and the cover version could have been done by GCSE students. How much did they pay these "award-winning" directors? Because they really should ask for a refund. After all, did Chris Martin not charge them with creating the "best music video ever"?
  19. RBOS shares are currently trading at 215p which is down 60% from the third quarter of 2007. I told dad repeatedly to bail at 420p, 400p, 380p and finally at 350p a few months ago... he wouldn't listen, the stubborn git (why listen to your son who has a continuously positive portfolio and connections in the city?!). Now he's staring at a loss of £120000, but at least he only plays with what he can afford to lose.
  20. Traditionally, the burden of captaincy hampers the old batting average... I hope Pietersen will buck that trend. Vaughan should have stepped down before touring New Zealand, but you would struggle to name a suitable replacement at the time. Unfortunately, he retires half the player that he was. How fickle people are and how quickly they forget everything that he and his team achieved. Quite simply, Vaughan was England's greatest modern captain and, albeit briefly, a world beating batsman.
  21. Both look rushed. Not impressed by either, to be honest.
  22. The idea is to address the inequality: Effort to vote > Probability of vote making a difference And reverse it: Effort to vote < Probability of vote making a difference + Probability of winning a prize I'm not convinced. BTW, the topic title is misleading. Do not confuse an "incentive to vote" with an "incentive to vote for me".
