We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
He really doesn't emanate more love and respect though than some other good old men and women that I met all over the world. Just there aren't enough people striving for that kind of warmth. I fully agree with what you mourn about here! :)

We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
Anti-proselytic was a misleading construction of me, I reckon. Buddhism has nothing to do with the idea of proselytism. It has developed beyond that. Buddhism is much more a science of how to gain clarity and logic than a religion in the common sense. The Dalai stresses the fact that Westerners shouldn't leave behind where they come from religiously and go crazy and convert to Buddhism. Because it doesn't make sense. It's all about: can you and do you want to be a good, empathic person or not. That's all. And since Buddhists have their Karma thing ( which I see a bit critical, but that's another story), they believe that it's your Karma if you can or want to be good or not. And they respect that Karma of yours, because that's simply who you are atm. Oha, hope I make sense? Btw, I cannot speak for the Bhutanese handling of Bhuddism. some things on the german wiki-site about Bhutan do indeed have a very dodgy smell to them.

Torture
Ooh. So difficult. I'm for torture under extreme, but clear circumstances. We had a case here a couple of years ago. I'll tell it to you all and you can think about it. I would be interested to get your thoughts. In 2002 an eleven year old boy got abducted by some sick shithead. 4 days later police caught the kidnapper when he picked up the ransom. But he refused to tell the police about the whereabouts of the boy. It was unclear if young Jakob was still alive. The kidnapper was being an arrogant prick, time was running. There was a young kid missing/ possibly hidden somewhere, maybe starving etc. and his family in limbo. The interrogating police officer eventually freaked out and threatened the asshole to torture him if neccessary to produce Jakob's abode. The asshole later sued the police officer for the threatening and the latter got a verdict, dunno what it was. The asshole had killed the boy on the day of the abduction. So what do you think? I think to preserve the physical intactness of somebody very sick and anti-social cannot not be more important than innocent life. But that is what law says at the moment. And that is not right, imo. I know, this is very crass, but if crassness was initially and callously created by a person, I think this person should know, that he/she him/herself is responsible for such crass matters if they have to be applied to save the lifes of others. I'm very serious about that point: that the offender and no one else is responsible for such a crass treatment as a stark consequence of his/her decision to be a crazy fucking monster. Never as punishment, that would be primitive. But if an offender refuses information which is important to save lifes, then yes.

We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
Did you get something valuable out of it? I got to shake hands with him and totally made him giggle, since I looked like a top-notch nutter that day. Other than that, I thought he's a really down to earth man. With such an intense life! And what we don't know in the West, he was holding together a rather sad lot of quarreling parties and gosh, all that crazy superstition of the average Tibetan alone must have driven him crazy on many an occasion. Edit: I need to go now. Bye everyone.

We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
As mentioned before, I spent half a year among Buddhists and since it was that tiny village, where the Dalai Lama lives in exile, there are a lot of people from all over the world searching for IT, whatever it is. Surely most people came to study Buddhism and eventually take refuge to it ( that's how you call it), but I myself was so inspired by my personal studies of buddhist teachings that I eventually stepped out of all systems ( pure logic!). And that was fine for anyone. I think the well educated tibetan Buddhist would enjoy your thoughts and both of you would soon agree, that you talk about the same stuff, but only use different words. The lesser well educated Buddhist wouldn't care, because they are not taught to missionise. They also wouldn't throw stones at you or talk behind your back about what an evil bastard you are. To start with, there's no God in Buddhism. It's all inside yourself. I guess you would agree with this, non?

We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
Buddhism is anti-proselytic, and my personal experience from having spent 6 months among Tibetans in India is that they also actually fully act and think according anti-proselytism. I tend to think, that Bhutan follows that same path.

We're Boned (AKA the 2011 Canadian elections)
Europe's having an ongoing sad hick-up too! It's strange and such a damn pity what happens in Canada, but many countries in Europe are tumbling towards bad ( right to far right-wing) ends as well. Hungary, Finland, the Netherlands and many others, it's a bad time here too. Norway might be worth checking out, at least I've heard good things about it regarding humaneness, education, no idea about their ecological moves though. Maybe you wanna ask some people from this board who live there about it. They will have a differentiated look on it, I don't really know anything and have never been there myself. Germany, where I'm from, seems to be on the edge of a very big change towards real sustainability atm. I'm actually slightly super- excited about the possible corrections towards refined democracy and economy on basis of sustainable ecology here. But one has to see for the next few years how far this will go. This country is very VERY far from being Shangrila either. Be adventurous, go to Bhutan! Seriously, go wiki Bhutan, they are doing their own little thing there, and it sounds very interesting. When I get a crisis about life here,I think about moving to Bhutan. But then they might not like me, since I'm not Ngalong, hahaha.
