^ That rule still rings true today, too. A friend posted a status asking all of us who the most overrated band is (in your opinion). I went with The Beatles, and a few people just straight up told me I was wrong. (Even though, y'know, music is subjective, so you can't be wrong.) Not to stereotype, but it seems that a lot of hardcore Beatles fans tend to get butthurt if you say ANYTHING even remotely negative about them.

Like a lot of the others, I read what magazines have to say mostly for discovering new music. It's all online, though; I don't have paper copies of magazines or anything. As for which ones, I've discovered quite a bit of music via SPIN magazine and the free mixtapes they give out to those on their mailing list. :awesome: Pitchfork is good for that, too, even though, as Michael said, they tend to be prejudiced a lot of the time. I like NME as well, just because I think I identify a lot with the British music scene, and they talk about a lot of my favorite bands. I'm not as familiar with Q, but I don't think I mind it, either. I don't really mess with Rolling Stone, though. I'm not familiar with Consequence of Sound, I don't think. I'll have to check them out. If Michael likes them, I'm bound to, also.

I've tried listening to them again. I've come to the conclusion that I literally cannot understand a single thing the frontman is singing. It's almost like he's singing with his mouth full of food or something. :freak:

Interestingly enough, on the news this morning, I saw that gun stocks have gone down 4-5%.

I'm REALLY digging "Gib Mir Deine Augen." :dance: I agree with you about the explicit version video of MHB. The aesthetic fits the song quite well. I didn't like the piano version of MHB as much as I expected to, though. I guess I feel that the original song gives the power that fits the song lyrically, and I lost that through stripping down to just piano. It sounds a bit too much like a lullaby for my liking. Having said that, it's OK. I liked the video a lot, though. Till was pretty swell in that. :wacky:

I didn't say that was the only thing that's different. I realize we have different gun laws than most other countries. I'm just saying that's a huge part of it. I just don't think it's right to, for lack of a better way to put it, punish the majority for things the minority are doing, if that makes any sense. I mean, I'm all for putting more restrictions on how to acquire guns and ammo, but banning them completely? I'm sorry, but I can't agree with that.

And that's exactly why the way the media addresses stuff like this should be changed. The news here doesn't concentrate on the thousands of American citizens who do good things; they concentrate on the one sick, twisted person who did something horrendously wrong. When a news station like HLN finds someone doing a good deed, they broadcast it in a little 1-2 minute segment, and that's it. People see it on TV, they go "Oh, that's nice," and then they forget about it. On the other hand, when you hear about a person like Adam Lanza doing something horrific, the news covers it for days and doesn't talk about much else. In turn, everyone will remember him for doing the bad thing. I think that's a huge crux of the argument people have made about the media. You hear all the bad stuff happening in this country because people somehow think bad things happening is way more newsworthy than good things, and that's definitely not how things should be. I apologize for going slightly off-tangent to your point (as I know that's not the point you were making at all), but that's what that statement made me think of.

As far as that song, I'm way more attached to 311's rendition.

I didn't say it was the same. I said it was similar, and it is. A guy came into a school and attacked children. Different details, yes, but same concept. I don't understand the whole "You can't do as much damage with knives" argument. It's almost like you guys are implying that injuring/killing people with knives isn't as bad as injuring/killing people with guns, which isn't true at all. In the hands of the wrong people, guns and knives serve the same twisted, demonic purpose.

I suppose anything music-themed will work just fine. Right before I finished student teaching, I gave the directors I worked with a little music memento they could hang on their wall. They really appreciated them, and it didn't cost much, either, as I got them at the dollar store. At any rate, I'm sure she'll appreciate the sentiment of you thinking of her. :nice:
