It's a reverb effect called modulation, which can be found on the Boss RV-5. Jonny has one in his pedal line up. He also changes the tone to a more treble sounding tone with the same pedal.

I like it. It got me into coldplay, speed of sound did. Plus listening to their other stuff over and over again, X&Y sounds kinda new and different after listening to the older songs for a bit.
