I want to talk about A Spell A Rebel Yell. The song is (strategically placed as) a B-Side to the Violet Hill. If Violet Hill sung at the PoV of a soldier who's leaving the loved ones, ASARY is quite simply the opposite. It's about those who got left behind yearning for the soldier to come back. The soldier (VH) and the loved one (ASARY) apparently share the same thought about the war: it's wrong, but inevitable. But the loved one cannot produce anything but words. And those words can only help them through two kinds of action. An endless repetitive wish or prayer, which little by little turns the words into a spell. Or a violent demanding outcry, which builds the words up into a rebel yell... ...maybe.
