I guess I just don't understand the concept of rioting and looting. Demonstrations, even intense ones... fine. But rioting? Attacking your own community, businesses, people? I don't get it.

So as I mentioned, I've traveled alone a few times, and each of those times were to England. This turned out to be a little longer than I anticipated, so I'll put these in spoilers. First time: Second time: Third time: Here's a little advice for travelling alone: Pack as light as you can. Keep in mind you'll likely be brining souveneirs back with you. Check with your cell phone company to make sure your phone will work at your destination. If not, you will need to rent a "global phone" before you leave. (And even that's not guaranteed to work completely as it should, as I learned first-hand on my third trip.) Exchange your currency BEFORE you leave. Otherwise you'll get crappy exchange rates at the airport. Bring more money than you think you'll actually need, in case you run into some weird unexpected situation. Keep the money in a few different places (keep some with you, some with your passport, a little stuffed in a pants pocket in your luggage, etc.). Let your bank / credit card companies know that you will be in a different country, and give them the dates. That way they won't question/decline purchases that you make while you are there. Try to familiarize yourself with local maps before you leave. Don't be afraid to ask people for help/directions. Find out whether your appliances (hair dryer, etc.) will work in the outlets at your destination. If not, get an adapter/converter before you leave. Get to the airport early. Hopefully this helps a little. And yes, it is such a liberating experience to travel alone, especially when it is to such a far-away place.

YES INDEED. Lore, I've traveled to England a few times by myself, although I met up with some people when I was there. I'll go into some more detail about the experience as a whole a little later when I have time. One time I was "homeless" for the night and I had to improvise... it's fun to pretend like you know what you're doing. :charming:

It was in the stands in the 12th row, which was pretty close to the floor. So it was a slightly better view than the floor (since I'm short), and I didn't have to pay the floor price. :D win-win

Okay SOOO I'm a bit late on this, but finally here are a few of my pics/vids/etc from the Paul McCartney concert in Detroit on July 24th. I invited my sister-in-law to go with me; she was utterly beside herself with excitement. We headed down to Detroit and got there 2.5 hours early, and even then by the time I pulled into my "usual" parking garage across from Comerica Park, there were only 6 spaces left. :freak: Even though it was 90+ degrees outside, we wandered around looking for a place to have dinner. Most places had at least an hour wait, so we finally just picked a restaurant, put in our name, and then wandered around some more for the next hour. It was a little toasty. Then we noticed thunderstorms approaching; but the tickets said the show would happen rain or shine, so we didn't worry! By the time we got to our seats in the park, which were right along the third-base line, he was just coming on stage so it was perfect timing! Of course we were standing for the first few songs, and then we heard the people behind us complaining "how rude, assholes, blah blah blah". I'm thinking, duuuude it's a concert, and we're probably not going to stand the whole time anyway. They nudged the people that were standing next to us, saying "we paid yadda yadda for these seats, sit down!" She replied, "look, the people in front of us are standing, so we can't see either so we're going to stand until they sit down." I felt like turning around and saying, "oh, so you think I only spent $10 on my tickets?" Mmmmmph. Sure enough 5 minutes later the people in front of us sat down, so the people behind us were being jackarses for nothing. At one point, when Paul was yapping before one of the songs he mentioned the he and his band had visited the Motown Museum earlier in the day. :dead: Can you imagine working there (that place is really small), and in walks Paul McCartney? That would be crazy. So glad I went, and so glad I was able to find somebody to take with me that I knew would enjoy it as much as I would.

I went to a music festival a few months ago alone (Detroit Electronic Music Festival). I didn't know anybody else that would want to go, so I just went by myself. It was fun to people-watch. :charming: It can be fun going with other people to concerts, but only if they really enjoy the artist like you do. If they are there just to keep you company, it just detracts from your enjoyment. I've experienced both scenarios; which is why I have come to the conclusion that I would prefer to go to a concert by myself if I can't find anybody to go with me that also really likes the artist. edit: It's actually nice to see how many people enjoy going to concerts alone. :wacky:

That's always the first thing that pops into my head even though I know it's the other one (I think because that's what my parents call it, I try to correct them but it just doesn't work).

I don't see this affecting the President at all. There may be plenty of other things that would affect his re-election chances, but I don't see this as one of them. However, I think this will have a substantial impact on elections for members of the House of Representatives and the Senate. They were the ones doing all of the bickering regarding the budget / debt ceiling which brought light to the credit rating situation. And it still isn't resolved, they just closed their eyes and plugged their ears, and as Jay said the can just got kicked further down the road.
