There was this divergence in rock music. American rock was really at a low point. There was Van Halen and a bunch of medicore bands (Bob Seger-type stuff). The good stuff was starting to trickle over here from Europe and slowly made it's way onto MTV and the radio. But for the most part, the European music had a pretty distinct style for most of the eighties. The American rock scene that can to the forefront in the early 90s was domant, giving rise to college radio as bands like REM couldn't find other popular outlets for their sound. Aside from those bands on college radio, there really wasn't anything American that was incorporating what was going on in Britian and the rest of Europe. It would be the 90s before the music of bands like U2 really started to influence musicians here. At least, that's my view.

I tend to agree. I don't like the 80s rock stuff. I tend to lean more towards the 80s music that, at the time, was referred to as "Modern Rock."
