  1. now that half of the second decade of coldplay's official recording career is done, let's talk about the averall impact coldplay has had during these times. for me, it feels like the first decade had more global influence/impact with era defining gems that would probably last far beyond coldplay's recording career: parachutes - yellow a rush of blood - the scientist, clocks x&y - arguably fix you viva - viva (there are so many more from this era that should be included... but not in terms of global impact) but i can't think of any song from the second decade that i would include in this group. some may argue for paradise, but that doesn't do for me. the only other song that showed some potential from the GS era is midnight. so for me, coldplay has some catching up to do to keep up with their previous record (which i don't think is high up on coldplay's list of priorities. but it is fun to talk about!). but being well-established artists with their "coldplay sound" well recognized, it becomes much more difficult to be impact-full as when you were fresh, novel. so i'm hoping for a left turn in their recording career soon. we can argue that won't happen with lp7, based on what we've heard of it so far. but as most of you, i'm hoping for a strange turn with lp8, no matter how crazy it would (could) be. having said all this though, the longevity coldplay has had so far is just amazing! specially when you consider how popular they still are. p.s. as are most of the posts these days, this too ended up being somewhat about lp7 and what is to come next.. my apologies.
  2. ah gotcha. and i do agree that will seems to be the more technical singer in the band. also i think most people around here would be very happy if coldplay make their own label after lp7. but i have a hard time seeing that since the band mostly seem to shy away from the business side of things, except maybe for phil taking a lead.
  3. i know that. we are talking about lp7 right?
  4. you know i was thinking about this awhile ago. the thing is, as sweet as will's voice is, it is not a lead vocal type. for me it feels too sweet and subtle, at least from what we've heard so far. it also goes to show how much character chris' voice has. but a couple of will's lead vocals would be pretty great.
  5. yes true. modular synth use is a reach. on GS recordings, i remember them saying in an interview that the band spend 2 weeks in LA and then in london alternatively as they share band custody. so probably recorded in london and LA.
  6. chris has mentioned that the tattoo and probably the song O is inspired by this book: [video=youtube;MCmZ2jrQooE]
  7. so according to rik simpson i guess we can expect a lot of modular synths to feature in the next album.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dXOYek3pBE#t=14m25s
  8. you are right. look for the most recent id numbers. since miracles, the only new song registered is Radio Dial Waltz in B minor. most of the unheard of previous registrations are from songs by other artists that sample coldplay songs.
  9. to be fair, it wasn't promoted or marketed well. and the movie seems to not be doing well in the press.
  10. with slings and arrows like these being thrown their way constantly, it is no wonder that coldplay are not as outspoken as they used to be, especially chris. not that they were very outspoken in the beginning, but you get the feeling of only getting soundbites from them for the most part. except for the amazing zane lowe interview this year.
  11. brandon flowers on their popularity, mentions coldplay x
  12. ^ people (both journalists and naysayers) are having a field day with this, still! it's just ammunition you know. and speaking of, there was a pretty coldplay-hating article from a usual coldplay hating writer today.
  13. pretty sure this was pre viva. i remember chris saying during viva interviews that he showed bowie a song he wrote and bowie said that it wasn't one of chris' best. and chris wasn't too personally offended since he wrote it under sleeping pills' influence.
  14. the official video is out: [video=youtube;Z9LH0ChM1eI]
  15. yeah, crazy how it is cancelled. although i think cancelling the movie release altogether has more to do with avoiding an abysmal box office performance after multiple theater companies dropped the movie from their theaters. but had all theaters opened as planned, possibly the movie would have raked in more than before just because of the amount of free marketing it got.
  16. aww. just saw i won best coldplay fan! thanks guys! and congrats to the other winners! :)
  17. Angelina Jolie May or May Not Have Taken Chris Martin Hostage Scratch beneath the surface of our most mainstream male musicians, and you'll find the soul of a stand-up comedian. John Mayer would rather tell jokes than sing earnest love songs, while Josh Groban's witty Twitter account will make you like him even more than your mom already does. Add to their ranks Chris Martin of Coldplay: When Vulture caught up with Martin this past weekend at a Hollywood luncheon meant to celebrate his song "Miracles," which plays over the closing credits of the film Unbroken, a very simple question put to the star — how did Angelina Jolie ask him to write the song for her second directorial effort? — became more of an improv-comedy prompt in Martin's hands. "I got a message that said, 'Meet in this undisclosed location. You'll be blindfolded and picked up by seven ex–Navy SEALs,'" Martin deadpanned. "So they kidnapped me, hit me over the head, and sprayed me with Mace. When I woke up, I was in an office, and Brad Pitt was doing push-ups as Angelina Jolie was just sitting there with her crown on. There was also a guy holding a knife to my throat, and she said, 'Write me a song, or else.' And Brad Pitt said, 'Yeah. What she said.'" Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. And how did that go? "We wrote a song and then she said, 'It's through to the final eight,' and then we had live eliminations at her house," Martin continued. And in this scenario with Angelina Jolie cast as Simon Cowell, did Coldplay triumph? "We came in second, but the main guy chickened out." In all seriousness, "Miracles" is Coldplay's second song written for a film soundtrack, after last year's "Atlas," composed for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Martin says he likes the discrete challenge of writing a single tune within strict parameters rather than creating an entire album. "I find that a little bit of limitation is really helpful when you're trying to create," he told Vulture. "Let's say you come up with an idea — like, 'I want to have a school for wizards' — then you've got a nice parentheses to put everything in. It's the same way when someone says to me, 'Here's the film and the book. Write something about that.' It's really nice to have those limitations because otherwise, where do you start?" And what movies has Martin responded to this year? "Boyhood," he replied immediately. (The Coldplay song contained in that Richard Linklater film surely didn't hurt.) "I've only seen that, and … well, I haven't seen the finished version of Unbroken yet, but I can't comment on it anyway, as I'd be biased." And perhaps abducted once more by Navy SEALs, should he fall out of line. x

  21. i just wish that he would bring some of that on the spot wit to live concerts, like in the viva era. he certainly knows how to charm a crowd. even snobby journalists :)
