  1. I wouldn't mind a Miracles with no copycat-Adam-Lavine-vocal-aerobics at the end. I hate when Chris does that.
  2. It was :P Maybe they figure it's far enough away to not affect sales much, but close enough to still have a lot of people looking towards the music industry. You can take advantage of the hype generated by other artists. Especially if the single is a slower song. Maybe they intend to co-opt some Adele fans. :laugh3: Having a release right between Black Friday and Christmas can't hurt either.
  3. Are there any implications for Amazing Day if Chris was wearing a shirt with the album logo? It seems unlikely to me he'd break it out for just a one-off festival song. idk
  4. Our of all the artists it could be who chart well, I can't help but think Adele is one of the best. Better her than Lil Wayne or Iggy Azalea. Besides, I think it's great they'll have to work hard for that spot. The music is going to have to be amazing- another GS won't get them #1 and that's how it should be. If anything, it makes me think they're not as influenced by Universal after all. This has to be the band's decision to release it so close and that's respectable.
  5. Gotta say MX as best cover. It just screams all of Coldplay's passions and chaos and nerdiness in one. It's so vibrant, creative, unique, thematic. I think Pitchfork said it best when they said Coldplay are at their best when they embrace the heart, spastic nature and yes even cheesiness (good way, not GS say)/geekness that makes them them and I see that in the MX cover. :)
  6. I think it's hard to balance reasonable expectations with what Coldplay gave us in the past. During Viva, they told us they were delaying the album to record Strawberry Swing, during MX they told us they were delaying the album to record Up in Flames and DLiBYH. I appreciated that as a fan. Since GS they seem a little different. :| While we're not entitled to anything, it's still something worth noting. A little simplistic but pretty cool I think.
  7. I don't know, nowadays drunk college kids shuffle anything but their "feet". :P That sounds more like a phrase to describe polite, formal college students in the 50's. :laugh3: It's always hard to decipher what exactly the band mean until you hear it.
  8. Wildfire. It's not incredible or anything, but it's pretty good (imo) and I think Stargate did a decent job considering what I've heard about them. Ah, really? hmm  I'd say there's reason to be slightly optimistic then.
  9. A trustworthy source saying the album is done and the first single should be out within a week. :) Slightly related and unrelated to the thread... as a Demi Lovato fan ( :P ) I was listening to her album that came out yesterday and discovered Stargate produced one of the songs. Much to my surprise, it was not only much less overproduced/ poppy/EDM influenced than many songs on the album, it was also one of the best. Granted, producers don't act the same with every artist but this could be the last song they've worked on released before the single/album is out. Some vocal/synth effects on the chorus was all I really noticed which is encouraging. Let's hope they follow this more minimalist direction for their part on AHFoD.
  10. Coldplay prioritized those things on Viva; it flows incredibly. :viva: But how does PoC's blaring synths and bass fit between the two acoustic songs UFO and Up in Flames? It couldn't sound more out of place there, (and on the album as a whole). MtM fits there much better, not only thematically (following UFO's lyrics) but musically as well. But what charts better today? A Pink-Floyd-esque song or superstar Rihanna? Same thing with ASFOS. What fits better there, a so-sweet-you-get-diabetes-from-it song or something like Atlas or All Your Friends? The band has been shoehorning in songs ft other artists that don't fit at all imo. :( I hope on AHFoD they truly do prioritize cohesiveness rather than foregoing it for a random chart single (regardless of Chris going out of his wake to make odd rationalizations for these songs)
  11. I don't think more songs needs to mean less quality at all. That's an awfully large assumption. Add 12 minutes (from 43 min to 55) in the form of Atlas, GS and All Your Friends to GS is a completely different (and much better) album to me. I'd rather have too many than miss out on some on AHFoD
  12. Just imagine what amazing songs we haven't heard, when Rainy Day, Moving to Mars and Ghost Story didn't 'make ' their respective albums. :whaaat: I bet there are other incredible songs that barely got left off albums since the 42 minute rule.
  13. This  There's no evolution whatsoever in their music. Like ZZ Top or Creed but that's just me. Appreciative of the song insights but definitely a little disconcerting. Bass drops like... EDM? That's the only genre that comes to mind when I hear that . I'm relieved that I can lower my expectations in advance now. :|
  14. X&Y: Not really any cliches? Cue up Swallowed in the Sea, The Hardest Part, Fix You or What If all have it in spades. Swallowed in the Sea is the worst offender of any Coldplay song imo up until GS VlV: Mostly they're amazing but what about Chinese Sleep Chant? Even Strawberry Swing and 42 could be a little uninspiring. The amazing music is what makes it so serene/emotional/powerful MX: PoC is cheesy but that's about it. Paradise is close but then it has lines like "the wheel breaks the butterfly" which is a phrase from old literature and is really cool. I think UAtW is one of Coldplay's best lyrical efforts <3 and HLH minus the chorus, UFO and UWtB are all really strong as well. I don't see it as straightforward, a lot of the lyrics make me wonder what to take away from it. Major Minus, Charlie Briwn and UFO I feel like there are plenty of interpretations for. I think people tend to gloss over X&Y's lyrical flaws because it's an older album with nostalgia and exaggerate MX's because it wasn't as good as VlV. :P
  15. I find this thread intriguing. I know you touched on this on the first post but I see this group of albums more as 'Consensusplay' than 'Oldplay.' Ignoring that HP 7 books comparison nonsense to shoe-horn in the unplanned GS, I really see it as albums of three. Viva sounds nothing like the first three albums. The producers were completely different (Brian Eno, Markus Dravs), as was the instrumentation (especially Davide Rossi's role- violin prominence), and the inclusion of strictly instrumental tracks. The lyrics are also much more abstract, the music uplifting rather than melancholy and both are fundamentally concept albums. I'm not including GS as to me, it's more an aside like PM. I think AHFoD will be an evolution from MX, the originally planned last of the second three Coldplay albums. Amazing Day also makes me think this but we're all only speculating at this point. Just my thoughts :D I think Melancholdplay and Chopelay (h as silent) seem more accurate imo.
  16. But Danger Mouse produced U2's latest album and it certainly wasn't their best but it wasn't bad and it wasn't rap or r&b. Assuming because x producer is involved the music must be y is a large assumption. I'm sure that just like musicians, producers want to expand their horizons as well. Many producers also even make their own albums. If Miracles is any sign of what's to come, I think that's a good one  At least compared to GS. I trust everyone who's not Chris to push back if they go in an awful direction.
  17. This. Not nearly as good as In Our Heads though imo Also: Mackintosh Braun- Arcadia Ratatat- Magnifique Lupe Fiasco- Tetsuo and Youth Possibly the most disappointing year musically for me, Arcadia the only great album. But every artist on this list disappointed compared to their last albums. Jordin Sparks' new album devastated me. :(
  18. It's unfair to compare this new song to others; we haven't heard it yet and more generally each album is pretty strikingly different (for better or worse). If you go in sure it'll be one specific sound, you may be disappointed even if the song's actual sound is good/great in it's own right. I'm also relieved they're not playing new songs left and right like before MX. It was so deflating having heard more than half the album come release time. Plus the utter disappointment from how vastly I preferred the live iterations. I couldn't appreciate MX until probably a little over a year ago. Besides, some songs are so much better in album context. That's how Viva songs are for me. Also we did just get an album less than 18 months ago. :P
  19. Who are those middle two artists? I have doubts they could top Adele sales or critical acclaim wise. But how could the media forget them? They seem pretty polarizing, people often love them or can't stand them. Which is weird considering how inoffensive both they themselves and their music are. But I don't want them to get a lot of press just because they didn't have to "compete" against anyone else. It deserves success and press attention if it's great/fantastic. :viva: If not? There's nothing else to say. :| I love Coldplay but I also don't think they deserve continued success based solely on their past amazing works.
  20. Why not "A Rousing Day?" because it's stirring/inspiring/moving. Sounds a lot less generic and uninspired. Besides, the current refrain doesn't even make sense grammatically. It's a non-sequitur. :P Only downside being it sounds like "Arousing" and I could see that being badly misinterpreted. :S
  21. That's just weird/concerning to me. What are the chances she's from India and this new Coldplay-related song is coming out this week on Friday, a couple days away like our fellow poster said? Probably a complete coincidence but has me worried none-the-less. Maybe they'll both come out on the same day?
  22. I don't think music needs to be complex to be interesting, although I agree it's usually better that way. :) Also I'm not well versed in music at all. I suppose it fits more with the songs fast-paced, urgent and a little electronically wonky style they were going for? But I guess what his guitar sounds like specifically around 1:25 and 2:33 is not actually a change to the sound of his guitar- it's just blanketed behind this mess of vocal effects(?) which detracts from it and then at 1:37-1:58 it's so shimmery sounding. I've never heard it that way before. Maybe just an effect? i know nothing about guitars but it almost sounds like a different instrument there. At 3:00-3:18 it sounds more like I'd expect. I agree there's such a disparity in how great or poor guitar riffs can sound depending on what effects they use or how the song is produced. I've also found as I become more into music quality some headphones separate the music better and I can hear actual strumming in some songs or even background melodies where I never heard it before. I didn't know about this for a long time. MX is kind of drowned in production though imo. DLiBYH is another song I feel is hampered by it. I much prefer what Guy (I believe had a big part in it?) did production-wise on GS and hope they don't go back to whatever they did on MX. :worried:
  23. It really is incredible what he does on that song. So why. WHY would they distort the hell out of it. :( The disappointment going from the live version to the studio version. Still great but. Not the same.
