What if they HAD killed Hitler? 01:26am 8th September 2007 Comments A new film starring Tom Cruise will spectacularly recreate the Nazi generals' plot to blowup Adolf Hitler. Here, a military historian poses the intriguing question, what if they had killed the Fuhrer? Early in the summer of 1944, Adolf Hitler commended the author of a military plan presented to him. "Finally, a general staff officer with imagination and intelligence!" he said. Germany's Fuhrer, who regarded most of his army's senior officers with contempt, was delighted to meet one who seemed to know what he was doing. And so indeed 37-year-old Colonel Count Claus…

Out on patrol with the bin police By Lucy Wilkins Test Valley Borough Council in Hampshire employs recycling advisors - otherwise known as "bin police" - to encourage people to dispose of their rubbish correctly. BBC News spent a day with them to see what they get up to. Stand on a street corner in the estates off King Arthur's Way, Andover, and all you'll see are bricks and bins. (Not to mention drugs, drugs and more drugs) Black bins and brown bins, like pairs of plastic, rectangular sentinels outside the front doors of low, brick houses. Are there any good alternatives to Ipod that you've tried or used? I don't have any qualms with Ipod. I mean it's really the world's digital audio player of choice. While that is well and good, it also means that the passenger seating beside you is listening to his ipod, and so is the person in front of you. Everyone in class has these familiar white earphones plugged in. Sometimes, just sometimes, I don't want to be just a face in the crowd. Only last month, I bought this rather cheap, 2004-model $90 digital audio player. I'm not into videos, but I crave disk space for my audio files. Well, a 5 Gig gadget would suffice, considering that a lesser-capacity Ipod wo…

HSE chief executive Geoffrey Podger said his team's examination showed "long-term damage" to the pipework. "It was absolutely essential that this pipework was fully contained, and it was not. There have been four years of discussion to replace this pipe, which did not happen," he said. scr…

Police to be issued with traffic warden-style ticket machines By JAMES SLACK - More by this author » Last updated at 00:29am on 5th September 2007 Comments Police officers risk becoming more like traffic wardens as they dish out more fines Police are to get ticketing machines to issue on-the-spot fines to shoplifters and vandals. But there are fears that the devices, which will lead to even more of the controversial £80 fixed-penalty notices being handed out, will reduce the status of officers to that of traffic wardens. The machines have also been criticised for encouraging "soft justice" because police can - at the push of a button - is…
