Would YOU be offended....

Featured Replies

.... if someone picked up on your accent (assume you had one) and started speaking like you. I ask this because I happen to have this bad habit of doing just that. I dont do it intentionally, it just happens... my ear picks up on it... and I start to speak with the accent. It could be any accent really.. but lately.. I find myself speaking with it.. and no one is even around for me to pick up on it... (did that make sense?) Anyhoo.. someone told me it was a form of flattery.. but I'm just curious to know what others think...

here are some accents I've used...

Austrailian

English (from various parts of the country I might add)

Boston (yes, the city :embarrased: )

Jamaican (when I lived in Miami)

Cuban (same as above)

help.. :embarrased:

some people might take it the wrong way and think you're making fun of them but others won't, it's a personal thing i guess

Come to Brazil and you´ll meet all kinds of accents :dozey:

i'd be offended....mainly because i believe i have no accent

but that's weird. i find myself doing the same thing. i notice it too, but i never think of it to offend anyone. i guess i'll think about it more next time i talk to someone with an accent. :P

Ya, then it would just seem like their accent is going away. :idea2:

I do this all the time ! In my Job I speak with people with loads of different accents, and I tend to adjust my communication style to match there's that also includes at times certain sentences or way of phrases things.

I also do this when speaking with people whose English is not their first language and tend to slow down when speaking to them at first but then I forget after a while.

So know providing its not down out of sarcasm or to be patronising I would be offended and I don't think anyone who is like minded would be neither.

I do it alot here. The dublin accent is usually pretty thick and strong but I don't really have an accent but when I'm around people who do I kinda adopt one!

People are very wary of their accent would probably think you're being patronising but I think it's quite a common habit so alot of people wouldn't be offended :)
