Will Coldplay ever be as big as oasis?

Featured Replies

I'm a fan of both oasis and coldplay, and I can tell you that in Australia at least, Coldplay have currently sold more copies of their current album than oasis have of theirs, but overall oasis had far more impact on people here in their heyday than coldplay do now...

i don't want to think about who's bigger, i like both bands a hell of a lot, and i honestly dont care! :)

I think Coldplay already is as bigger as Oasis!

To elaborate one what a couple of people have suggested, I think the attention Oasis get is disproportionate to their talent or even their popularity. If the Gallaghers weren't such foul-mouthed assholes, I'll bet a lot of people wouldn't even remember the name Oasis.

That has nothing to do with whether or not they're any good, I'm just saying that you can hardly deny that their constant mouthing off has gotten them some publicity they wouldn't otherwise have.

As much as I love both bands, Chris Martin does not look like writing a "Live Forever" anytime soon... I'll say a lot of their stuff has definitely surpassed oasis' last few albums, but they'll never have a simple song in the quality of Live Forever... Their production seems they are over creating those simple classics, opting to beef up every one of their songs with a massive production, which is definitely not a bad thing, as the whole of x&y is immense...

Don't judge on singles btw

The singles chart means fuck all today, hence Crazy Frog....

I think that does matter in many ways but i guess you dont but i mean that does make a differenc.e.... :)

in the US...

hmm...

im gonna say, that coldplay is generally more popular than oasis was...

hmmmmm....i think it boils down to the sound of the two bands' singers...chris martin certainly brings to the table a smooth sound and his signature falsetto can evoke a deep melancholly or rock out to power chords. I dont know if Liam or Noel's voices were as versatile...mmmaybe they were...

hmmmmm....would it be fair to say that coldplay will be more musically influential?? I might just be biased tho...i feel like they're helping to resurrect the piano...i love piano....

but hmmmmmm...is coldplay's sound unique?? i would say yes...definitely

was oasis's sound unique? i would say no...but i don't mean to discredit their songwriting, which i think it outstanding...just not a very different sound...

hmm...does any of that make sense?

paz,

I mean if Coldplay were around when Oasis were in their prime they could have had some no.1 singles.

It's just today's single chart

Coldplay are one of the worlds biggest band and are britians biggest band. They are much more bigger then oasis :) :)

Coldplay have broken America, the largest music market in the world. they are the only band since the beatles to go top 10 with a single in its first week of release (correct me if the wording of that is wrong!). Oasis have failed miserably in America.

Coldplay's 1st three albums have had so much critical acclaim, only Oasis' first two albums recieved such praise, and even then not as high praise.

The point about UK no1 singles isn't fair - the UK singles charts are in turmoil, and are now useless as single sales have dropped dramatically.

There's more, but i'm tired and need to sleep...... :dozey:

IIRC, I believe they're the first British band. I'm sure some American band like nsync and Backstreet Boys have accomplished this feat.
