Music Lessons with John Mayer

This Month's Lesson: The Trouble with Fulfillment

Why Chris Martin may face the artistic challenge of his career

Down the street from me at the Hit Factory, one of my generation's best bands, Coldplay, is in the midst of recording its new album. Normally, I'd feel pangs of jealousy that I'm not in the studio with a band so inspired. But this time, I couldn't be happier not to be in that building.

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has found his niche in making the sound of solitude a triumphant experience, like Good Will Hunting: The Musical . When Martin sings the word you, it serves as a silhouetted placeholder that lonely ladies everywhere can slip in and out of. Men can play with it, too. But what happens when you refers to wife Gwyneth Paltrow? Suddenly the word crystallizes into the shape of a face the listener can't emotionally relate to. So thanks to marriage and a new family, Chris Martin is now fulfilled but facing an age-old artistic challenge: Once you're happy, what the hell do you sing about next?

I'm interested to find out. For a couple of songs, at least. That good ol' rainy hurt Martin's so good at is still going to have to come from somewhere, though; the past is always good for that. But will his wife be cool with him laboring for hours inside the heart space of his past loves? You know that's not gonna be easy. And let's say out of fairness that the next record turns out to be a 14-song love letter to his woman and it's the greatest thing since, well, A Rush of Blood to the Head . Next thing you know, the two split and Martin has a whole record's worth of awesome material that's too painful for the guy to ever play. We get the wet end of the stick there, too.

Losing touch with the listener is a fatal act for a songwriter. All it takes is a record of themes ranging from "My Baby Is a Bundle of Joy!" to "Why Can't You Just Let Me Be (Suck It, Media!)" before those who just wanted to hear "the truth is I miss you" think that it's time to move on. Remember the end of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade , when Indy goes looking for the Holy Grail, passing through all those deadly traps? If anybody can navigate the cave and grab the cup of the carpenter, it's Chris Martin. As self-aware as I know him to be, he's got this whole question figured out already. And I'm getting jealous again.

hah, cited indiana jones: the last crusade. i love him already.

Didn't know that Puff Daddy/P. Diddy/Diddy.. whatever.. listen to Coldplay :O

The hobbits from 'The lord of the rings' are all into Coldplay. One of them (Dominic Monaghan, who's also acting in 'Lost' these days) has bought some land from Future Forest right next to Coldplay's and he writes the word TREES on his hand, as Chris writes MTF; and he wears bands around his fingers in 'Lost', maybe that's about Chris's colored bands too... :idea2:

Thanks for the artical

Also Jason Biggs is a big fan
