Coldplay's new CD has rules: No MP3s, no DVD players, no car stereos

Coldplay's new CD comes with an insert that discloses all the rules enforced by the DRM they included on the disc. Of course, these rules are only visible after you've paid for the CD and brought it home, and as the disc's rules say, "Except for manufacturing problems, we do not accept product exchange, return or refund," so if you don't like the rules, that's tough.

What are the other rules? Here are some gems: "This CD can't be burnt onto a CD or hard disc, nor can it be converted to an MP3" and "This CD may not play in DVD players, car stereos, portable players, game players, all PCs and Macintosh PCs." Best of all, the insert explains that this is all "in order for you to enjoy a high quality music experience." Now, that's quality.

here is the insert below.

I wonder how Coldplay feels about their fans getting all these rules set down for them by the music label? I wonder if most fans who read these rules will be wise enough to blame corporate, or whether they'll just decide to dig up a band whose label treats them like customers, not crooks? It's amazing how the labels always seem to come up with new ways of screwing artists: if they're not cheating them out of royalties, they're systematically alienating their fan-base.

You're talking about X&Y right?

Because I burned the disc to my Itunes and then put it on my Ipod...and I also play it in my DVD player...

So, what? You can't play the CD in anything but a CD player?

...Seriously?

i think they just did it....if you bought the cd when it first came out you shouldnt have a problem...but the cd now looks different and has this crap put onto it.

I hope not! Listening to it in the car is one of my favorite things to do! :(

fans are going to be so pissed off...all this does is encourage illegal downloading

Uggghhhhh.

I can... but I do like to take that CD and play it in cars. And on my comp. Even in my PS2. Omg, I don't want to have to go into my room every time I want to listen to certain songs.

the problem with becoming commercial...your label takes advantage of you...this is the first time i have ever heard of these rules before...wtf!

dudes.. that leaflet was for the INDIA release of X&Y only.. http://itch.in/journal/bad-bad-coldplay

if its only for india why is the leaflet in english? why would they only do it for one country? someone could just as easily buy a different countries copy off of amazon.

people on the coldplay.com forum have stated that they just bought the cd and cant put it onto their computer...and these people do not live in india.

And what's with the hate for Macintosh computers? :( *Pets computer*

And I don't understand the whole car stereo thing. So... what? You can't drive down the street with the album blaring from your radio or else people would catch a snatch of a song WITHOUTPAYINGFORITOMG?

So you didn't get that in YOUR CD, you just found this notice thing? It doesn't say you can't, it says the thing may not work on some devices that have the ability to burn.
