Is the English language more flexible?

Featured Replies

My friend seems to be under the impression that English, because of it's slang and such, is much more flexible then most languages. She speaks Spanish and French, so I guess she has a right to speak...

But I dunno, surely slang exists in other languages? My friend only learnt how to speak other languages in an English speaking country so she wouldn't learn all the in's and out's of it.

I used to speak a good bit of French as a child, but I hardly remember any of it. I just remember the verbs were a bit complicated. Even when I knew french and could speak and be understood by other French speakers (I lived in Canada) I still didnt know the correct verbs and terms.

To me, English definately seems easier then Spanish or Portugeuse, or a lot of other languages. But it also seems that English is the only language of it's kind, and there's also a lot of similiarities between some other languages.

i speak spanish and much french...i would have to agree that English is a pretty asweosmely flexible language.

SO many people of so many languages have used it and have come up with ways to learn it and such. And there is so much you can do with it that you can't do with other languages

english grammatics is easy.i can russian and hungarian fluently, learning german.all 3 have more difficult grammatics than english

maybe you should ask her?

I wont see her until the 30th and will probably forget.

Nik I know two Ukranian girls, and when they speak Ukranian, it is quite possibly the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. And then I heard the Ukranian men speak, that's pretty ugly.

It definately sounds very complexed. If the Ukranians and Russians could turn that into freestyle rapping, Busta Rhymes would be right outta business.

maybe your attention was on other things and you didn't really hear those girls :uneasy:

I THink that is what she meant but maybe I don't want to put myself in a strange hungarian girls mind...so i dunno

Hahaha, no, trust me, it was just the voices :P

I think I heard Ukranian rap as part of Eurovision. My. God.

Are you talking about my friend? Im confussed. My friend is English and learned spanish and french in school.

Eurovision is one of the most disappointing things i've ever seen :uneasy:

still haven't discovered any talents there

:dead: *blind man*

English is definitely more flexible than French or Spanish. I've been learning English for 8 years now and i've realized it's pretty much rutine. All languages coming from Latin have many different verb forms, so they're harder to learn

well, i consider myself a lucky guy for speaking a few languages (portuguese, italian, french, german, english) and definitly english is the easiest...

btw, i've been told that portuguese is one of the most difficult languages to learn...

For me, learning English was very easy, because it's so similar to German (fish=Fisch, house=Haus, school=Schule). You also have only one article (the) instead of three in German (der, die, das). So it's much easier to learn it. I've heard that German is one of the most difficult languages worldwide, so I'm proud to speak it. :) Well, ok most of the Germans are still confused. :D In 1996 there was a new big spelling reform (daß -> dass, Schiffahrt -> Schifffahrt etc.) and some newspapers still use the old spelling reform. It's such a shame...

But it's not so easy for me to learn French or Spanish. They are in another language group, together with Portuguese and Latin. ;) So, words aren't similar to German words anymore.

But I dunno, surely slang exists in other languages? My friend only learnt how to speak other languages in an English speaking country so she wouldn't learn all the in's and out's of it.

slang does exist in other language. And it' s really the problem when you have to traduce it on other language cause it's for most of the time something linked with the history of the country

most of you english have difficulties about name and their gender when you're learning french and spanish(both of them have latins origins). I think also that conjugaison in latins countries has stayed as they were in XVI century so it's not making things easier.

der' date='die, das is one of the most difficult things i've ever met :uneasy:[/quote']

Yeah! And some things are unlogical, for example "das Mädchen" (the girl). So, the girl is not female, it's neutral. :D But when you'll write the plural form, it's called "die Mädchen" (the girls). Very difficult! :D

Well.........if we talk about slangs or dialects in languages............then I have to say that german can be very flexible too............it varies here even in villages which are next to each other (my village is an example for that)......it begins with my mum and my dad..........my mum is from a village which is 5km away from here..my dad from a village which is just 1 km from here....they have sometimes the quarrel of their dialects..which can be really funny!

A friend of mine says that my mum's dialect makes her really male like

although she thinks she is pretty!

I'm sorry if I do not talk about the topic you are talking about Reilly!

Personally, I absolutely adore the English language. It has an easy grammar, which can, contrary to for instance German, be used intuitively. I can honestly say that my knowledge of the English grammar is quite crap. I can't tell the difference between past tense or past perfect, or whatever the heck it's called, yet I can perfectly well make sentences in these times. I can simply tell when I write something down whether it's correct English or not. If I start guessing with der, die and das in German I tend to completely fuck up my tests... Also, English has an incredibly rich vocabulary. For instance, while I can think of a lot of words or conceptions existing as a word which I can't translate into a single Dutch, German or French word (to flinch, to wince, gargantuan) there's only two words (which everyone in the Netherlands knows) that can't be translated from Dutch into English. This makes it a lot easier to express yourself very refinedly in less words.

The only crap thing about English is that while the vocabulary makes it lovely to write poems in, it rhymes like crap, simply because there's so many words... :P

your damn right!!!!! :D

i love the english language!

and i also love the fact that there are some differences between BE and AE...

however ... english is easy to learn ...

i'm also learning french and spanish (german is my mother tongue) and those two languages are killing me!!!!

well, i'd say that spanish is a little easier than spanish ...

it's almost impossible to conjugate all the french verbs ...
