Doherty freed after syringe probe

dohertyPA010606_228x296.jpg Pete Doherty: Detained after airline staff found a syringe in the on-board toilet

Singer Pete Doherty has been freed without charge after being detained at a Spanish airport, police said.

He and four friends were held at Barcelona after the captain of the easyJet flight they were on radioed police asking them to meet it when it landed.

An airline spokeswoman said the cabin crew became suspicious after noticing Doherty had spent a long time in the on-board toilet.

When they searched it they found a syringe hidden in a bin and covered in blood, the spokeswoman said.

A Guardia Civil spokesman said police were called to the plane at 5.30pm local time (4.30pm BST).

"The captain called for the police because a passenger was a long time in the toilet," he said.

Doherty and four friends were taken to a police station and their bags were searched, but no syringes were found, although the singer was carrying a container with methadone in it. All five were released with no further action.

Doherty and his band Babyshambles were flying from Gatwick to the Spanish city, where they were due to play the Primavera Sound Festival.

The troubled singer is taking the heroin substitute methadone as part of a drug treatment programme.

Aviation regulations require passengers to inform an airline in advance if they are carrying a syringe for medical reasons and Doherty failed to do so, according to easyJet.

Doherty and his fellow band members have now been banned from flying easyJet, a spokeswoman for the airline said.

"You simply cannot take syringes on an aircraft without permission and cause a potential hazard to other passengers," she said.

The singer and on-off boyfriend of supermodel Kate Moss was said to have become "agitated and aggressive" when questioned by cabin crew.

The spokeswoman said: "During the flight our cabin crew became suspicious of a passenger who spent a lot of time in the toilet. When he came out they saw it was Pete Doherty.

"Members of the cabin crew then entered the toilet and found a syringe hidden in a bin, covered in blood.

"When questioned, Pete Doherty became agitated and aggressive. The cabin crew informed the captain, who called ahead and asked police in Barcelona to meet the flight on arrival."

The spokeswoman added: "When the police came on board, a member of the party went into the toilet with a bag and came out without it. This sparked a security alert.

"The police came on board and would not allow anybody to leave the aircraft until every piece of hand luggage had been identified.

"Unfortunately, members of the Doherty party began throwing their bags around and swapping bags, and would not identify which bags were which. They were not being cooperative with the police and they did not seem to be taking the situation seriously."

The spokeswoman praised the cabin crew for their vigilance.

"Our cabin crew are trained to spot any unusual behaviour. We have very strict rules about unreasonable behaviour on board our flights," she said.

Doherty, 27, is due to appear at Thames Magistrates Court in east London on June 9, where his progress in the drug treatment programme will be reviewed.

In April he was sentenced to a community order with two years' supervision and 18 months' drug rehabilitation after admitting seven charges of possessing drugs including heroin, cocaine and cannabis.

Two months earlier he received a 12-month community order when he was sentenced on a separate charge of seven counts of possessing controlled drugs. The judge has warned Doherty he faces jail if he does not stay off drugs.

The bloke is a fucking idiot who can't hold a note to save his life. What pisses me off is that he'll end up killing himself and being made a martar. Just like Cobain, Hendrix etc, etc. I blame the British press for his rise personally.

Apparently he wanted to join the "mile high" club - but got the wrong idea!!

Ha, your punnery strikes again. Will you ever learn MC? what a card.

:(

It wasn't heroin, it was methadone which he's taking as part of a drug rehabilitation program. Just for the record, it's something the article unfortunately fails to address.

"You simply cannot take syringes on an aircraft without permission and cause a potential hazard to other passengers," she said.
Maybe I was a little harsh, however why is this guy still on the streets? Drug rehab should be behind closed doors. He's causing no end of trouble for innocent people.

Probably not the most sensible idea in the world, given the current climate

What is he doing with a passport in the first place?

Maybe? ;) Talking about getting a deeply troubled (yet, in my OPINION brilliant) person help to battle his demons is one thing. Talking about killing him, that's a little.......... uncalled for.

Sorry, I feel a big need to defend him. I used to absolutely despise him. Then I got The Libertines albums. They're probably my favorite band right now, it shocked me. I've learned never to judge people too quickly based on often faulty and biased information. Doesn't mean I don't hate the drugs, though. :(

Sounds to me from this article he has the wrong people around him, and that's a bit of a problem for him...

That is the problem, too many yes men and women. Someone needs to just go up to him and slap the sense INTO him.

He needs to get back with Carl Barat. He would be good for him. *heavy sigh* I hate being a fan... Very stressful!

:(

He says it Methadone...

...But we know Pete's a lier so he prob got himself loaded on heroin in the toilet. Lock him up and though away the key before he kills himself/kills someone

And that's why they found Methadone and no heroin on him??? Believe it or not, but sometimes there are other sources of information outside what the Daily Mirror or The Sun reports.

I read the NME.com site, and even they got fed up with him trying to grab the headliners.

So all i have to say is:

If pete goes in front of a judge who doesn't care about his celebraty status, then he will throw him away, because he doesn't look like to be changing for the good

He needs to get his head out the clouds and get on with it, he's not cool, I don't like The Libertines or Babyshambles, they both bore my pants off, but I feel sorry for this guy, I really do.

To quote Mr T. "I don't hate Doherty, I pity the fool!" Although I'm pretty sure he was talking about Rocky. Anyway, there was one point when he lived his life with a certain romantic zest. Turning up for impromptu gigs, stoping round fans houses and so on. But now he's just unreliable. The drugs have taken their tole and his career is suffering for it. I've been reliably informed that Babyshambles have been dropped. here's hoping that it's true because the sooner the music industry washes its hands of this talentless, junkie loser the better.

I do pity the fool

He certainly needs help, he just won't allow people to do that. I must admit that I've got a lot more respect for Carl Barrat for keeping a dignified silence. Wen't to see his band 3 weeks ago they were pretty pants though.

I'm not too impressed with any of their stuff to be quite honest, it all sounds the same to me.

Here, here, My cousin had a spare ticket so he dragged me along. I wasn't impressed at all with them. I gave them the benefit of the doubt as there are a couple of Libertines songs that I like. DPT just seemed quite bland to me, still I'd see them anyday over Babyshambles. Down in Albion has to be one of the worst albums of the past 12 months. And thats' coming from somebody who was conned into buying The Strokes 3rd album.

why isn't this boy in rehab????? I can't believe this guy! Its like everyone knows he's an addict..... "oh look he's shooting up la la la" and does nothing!!

he sickens me.... I swear! I can't stand to look at his mug...

And he is now saying even the ban from easy jet will not stop him from travelling with them again
